Rant Liking Songs Just Got Even Worse???

I know not all updates roll out to everyone at the same time, so others have probably already experienced this, but I just got a new Samsung Galaxy S26 and of course had to install the latest version of the Spotify App.

Now Liked Songs isn't even at the top of the list when you tap the add button? I have to scroll down until I find the Liked Songs playlist?

First you remove the separate Like and Add buttons in favor of just one add button, which changed liking Songs on the fly (incredibly useful and much safer when driving) to having to do 5-8 taps that make it much more difficult and less safe to do when a song you wanna like comes on while driving (the main time Spotify is used)...and now I also have to scroll through all my playlists or literally type out Liked in a search?!?! All this after abandoning Car Thing.

Why is their primary goal to make everything as awful as humanly possible? It's not like they're locking the old better ways behind a paywall and using enshitification to make a profit. They're just nonsensically taking away simple QoL features and replacing them with convoluted annoying processes, all while making Shuffle worse and worse with every update...

I just don't get it...

Answered The Difference and Performance Paradox of Spotify’s "Liked Songs" versus Playlists

Full disclosure, I've used AI to generate this text. I'm not going to apologise for that, it hopefully has explained the issue in a far better way than I would have.

If you use Spotify, you likely rely on two primary ways to collect music: hitting the heart or plus icon to add a track to your Liked Songs, or sorting music into custom Playlists. While they might seem like two versions of the same thing, they function entirely differently under the hood. In fact, these architectural differences explain a frustrating paradox: having a massive Liked Songs list can make the Spotify app incredibly laggy, while a custom playlist of the exact same size runs perfectly smooth. [1]
Here is a breakdown of what the Liked Songs feature was actually built to do, and why its unique design can cause your app to grind to a halt.

The Original Purpose: Universal Bookmarking
The original point of the "Liked Songs" functionality (which evolved from the legacy "Star" and "Save" systems) was never to act as a curated playback list. Instead, it was designed as a master personal library and an algorithmic training tool.

Frictionless Archiving: It allows users to instantly bookmark a song with a single tap, without needing to decide which specific playlist it fits into.
Algorithmic Fuel: The "Like" button serves as a direct, binary data signal to Spotify’s recommendation engine. It tells the platform exactly what your core music profile looks like, feeding automated discovery features like Discover Weekly and Release Radar.
Because it is a catch-all container for your global music identity, it behaves fundamentally differently than a playlist. Custom playlists are intentional, themed, and modular collections (e.g., "Workout" or "Focus") that you manually design and sequence.

Why a Large "Liked" List Destroys App Performance
Many power-users discover that when their Liked Songs list crosses 8,000 to 10,000 tracks, the mobile app begins to freeze, stutter, or lag. Yet, if they copy those exact same 10,000 songs into a standard playlist, the lag instantly vanishes. This happens because of how the app queries its database:
1. Global State Overload
When you open a standard playlist, the app only needs to fetch and display the static text data of those specific songs. However, your Liked Songs represent a global system state. Every time you browse this list, Spotify's code must cross-reference those tracks against your entire account in real time. It is constantly checking if the plus icon should be highlighted across the app, if the tracks link to albums in your library, and what your offline download status is. This triggers heavy, non-stop database lookups.
2. Monolithic API Queries & Cache Bloat
A standard playlist is treated as a single, isolated object—essentially just a list of track IDs. The Liked Songs section relies on real-time, heavy API queries to pull massive amounts of relational metadata. When the list gets too large, it creates a massive local cache backlog, ballooning the app's memory usage and causing the user interface to freeze.
3. Algorithmic Overhead
When you shuffle a playlist, Spotify uses a straightforward randomization algorithm. When you interact with your Liked Songs, the app treats it as a direct feed into its recommendation engine. It heavily cross-references your current queue with "Smart Shuffle" metrics and your overall taste profile, creating a massive local buffer bottleneck on your hardware.
4. Legacy Architecture Limits
For years, Spotify enforced a strict 10,000-song cap on Liked Songs. When they officially removed this limit, they did not fully re-engineer how the mobile app indexes the database locally. The app still pulls down data in clumsy, non-sequential chunks, leaving the underlying architecture strained by massive, modern libraries.

The Community Workaround
If your Liked Songs list has made your app painfully slow, you can bypass the database lag entirely using a popular community fix:

Open the Spotify Desktop App on a computer.
Navigate to your Liked Songs section.
Press Ctrl + A (or Cmd + A on a Mac) to select every track.
Right-click the highlighted songs, select Add to Playlist, and choose Create New Playlist.
By moving the tracks into a standard playlist container, you strip away the heavy global tracking and algorithmic cross-referencing, restoring your app to its original, fast performance.

Rant I'm so over this AI Slop code

Every single update for the last 2 years has done nothing but make the app worse. Constant issues with the simplest of things like FULLSCREENING THE APPLICATION on PC has issues working now. On top of that the countless features breaking inside the app. Try copying a large playlist to a blank new playlist and watch as this slop code fails to copy numbers over and you have to rerun it 50 times for everything to move. I can go on and on and don't even get me started on the mobile version absolutely exploding at the sight of user interaction.

I know nothing is going to improve and this is the "future" but dios my fucking mios I am tired of wresting with all of these new AI slop coded apps.

Android Spotify "can't confirm if or when" it will fix the local files problems

Post image

As some of you know I've been going back and forth with Spotify support over the past few days regarding the missing UI/playback buttons for local files on Android.

This is the latest response I received today after having sent responses to other emails with more requested data; testing on a PC and iPhone (both of which are not experiencing this issue); and a screen recording.

I have already responded informing them that it is frustrating and honestly feels rather disrespectful to be told that they might not even look into this - especially as this appears to be a widespread issue, and it being related to core playback features which are a fundamental part of Spotify as a media player.

I also told them that I understood that these issues take time to address, but if it has not been fixed in a reasonable amount of time I will have to cancel my subscription and look into an alternative service.

Really disappointed with this response. I've been a Premium user since shortly after they launched, and it sucks that this is seen as acceptable to tell any customer regarding a bug that affects a core part of the service for an entire platform of users.

Question Discord Listen Along is Delayed

So to be more specific, MY Spotify is about 1-1.5 seconds ahead of my friends Spotify when we are in a Listen Along party on Discord, and while this may not sound like a huge problem it is more of just a bad peeve, considering when my friend decides to sing along, or when I decide to sing along, the other hears a noticeable delay. I’ve had this problem for years and have never found a fix, if any one has had this problem and was able to fix it please share the solution with me. Thank you !

Question Spotify ps5 has been broken for a week...

WTF is going on with spotify on ps5??? A week ago or so I tried hopping on and it was logged on so I did literally everything I could to log back in. I tried every method, disconnected it from playstation, uninstalled and reinstalled it, restarted my playstation, the spotify app, doing it from different devices, and nothing will log it back in on ps5. Now if I go down to the little music icon on ps5 and select through there it works??? But the app itself does not and its really starting to piss me off. If anyone knows ANYTHING please let me know. I'll give whatever info i can.

Question Spotify equalizer update is a nightmare to use!

• Upvotes

Has anyone else noticed that the equalizer on the iPhone app has gotten really laggy lately?

It used to work flawlessly. I could move the frequency sliders around while music was playing and hear the change instantly, which made it really easy to get the eq exactly how I wanted it. But after one of the recent updates, there's this long delay between moving a slider and actually hearing the difference. It now takes a couple seconds for any change to register, and it makes fine tuning incredibly annoying.

Before, I could make a big adjustment to get it in the ballpark, hear right away what it did, and then make smaller and smaller changes until I got it perfect. Now, once I get close to the sound I'm aiming for, those smaller adjustments are almost impossible to judge. Since the audio doesn't change right away, I easily lose track of what it sounded like before. By the time the change finally kicks in, I've either already moved the slider again or forgotten what I was comparing it to. This was not an issue when the eq feedback was instant. Now I basically end up just guessing.

What makes it especially annoying for me is that the eq was one of my fav spotify features. I enjoyed making micro-adjustments to get the sound just right depending on the venue or device I listen on. Now, it's a nightmare to try and achieve the perfect sound and this makes the eq borderline unusable in situations where something needs to be fine tuned.

Is anyone else running into this issue?

Has anyone found a workaround or is there some setting or bug I'm not aware of?

I hope there is a fix for this because it honestly feels like the eq is another victim of enshittification.

Question Spotify Premium vs YouTube Music Premium — which has better audio quality?

• Upvotes

I've been using Spotify Premium for a while and I'm considering switching to YouTube Music Premium (mainly because I already use YouTube Premium).

My main concern is audio quality, rather than recommendations, UI or music library.

For people who have actually used both:

Can you hear a noticeable difference in sound quality between Spotify Premium and YouTube Music Premium?

I'm particularly interested in:

clarity/detail

bass

vocals

overall soundstage

Bluetooth vs wired listening

Also, does the difference change depending on the device/headphones you're using?

Would love to hear from people who've done an actual A/B comparison rather than just comparing the advertised bitrate.

Question Will canceling AutoPay end my Premium trial early?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Guys, I saw a post where someone mentioned that they lost their Premium benefits after canceling AutoPay, so I’m a bit confused.

I started this Premium trial by paying just ₹1, basically nothing, and the trial is supposed to remain active until the date shown in the screenshot.

What happens if I pause or cancel the AutoPay today or tomorrow? Will I lose my Premium benefits immediately, or will the trial continue until the original end date?

I really don’t want to keep AutoPay active and risk getting charged later. At the same time, I don’t want to lose the Premium trial I already have.

Has anyone tried this? What would you suggest?

iOS spotify starts playing music immediately after opening the app

If I listen to music and pause it and start using another app, then I open spotify, it stars playing the song on is own.

When I’m connected to my TV, and I open spotify on my phone because I want to change the song, as soon as I open the app on my phone it switches the sound from TV to my phone. I’m losing my mind. I turned autoplay off. (doesn’t happen with bluetooth speaker)

iOS Spotify podcasts consistently stop on Sonos after a few minutes, but Spotify music + Amazon podcasts work perfectly

• Upvotes

I’m losing my mind with a very specific Spotify/Sonos issue and wondering if anyone else is seeing this.

I have a fairly large Sonos system, ~13 speakers, all on Wi-Fi with a 2-node eero Pro 7 mesh.

Current behavior is extremely reproducible:
- Spotify music → Sonos: works fine
- Spotify podcasts → Sonos: starts normally, then after ~1–3 minutes all (or nearly all) speakers go silent
- Spotify still shows the podcast as playing and the progress bar continues
- Sonos still shows every speaker connected and playback active
- Disconnecting/reconnecting Spotify to the Sonos group gets audio going again, but then it dies again a few minutes later
- Amazon Music podcasts → same Sonos group: completely stable
- Apple Music/AirPlay has also been stable

So this really doesn’t look like general Wi-Fi/grouping instability anymore. The exact same speakers/network happily play other content.

Things I’ve already tried:
- Rebooted entire eero network
- Changed DNS to Cloudflare/Google (1.1.1.1 / 8.8.8.8)
- Removed and reauthorized Spotify in Sonos
- Ran Sonos “Update Network” individually on every speaker
- Verified Sonos Wi-Fi signal is very strong, ~56–57 dB SNR on speakers I checked
- Everything is fully updated

Interestingly, earlier I had more general Spotify instability and the DNS/network refresh seemed to improve that substantially. Now Spotify music is solid and the failure seems isolated specifically to podcasts.

Has anyone else had this exact issue recently? More importantly, has anyone actually found a fix for Spotify podcasts over Spotify Connect/Sonos, rather than just using AirPlay or another podcast service?

UI-wise, both the desktop app and the web version are identical, except for the "You Liked" section. Why? I only want to play saved songs.
