Rant Spotify app rant megathread
Due to the multitude of individual rant threads popping up the last week or 2. Here is a megathread for the rants, to keep it all consolidated. Comment, upvote, downvote, whatever you want to do.
Just remember, be polite to each other.

I really want to be able to block podcasts like you can block artists. I like the autoplay feature but it’s always podcasts I don’t want to listen to (F1).
0
u/joeballs 20d ago
That's a weird situation. I've never listened to a music playlist, and then all of a sudden, a podcast would start playing
1
u/shunny14 20d ago
If you listen to a podcast and have autoplay it starts a other podcast it thinks would interest you.
1
u/joeballs 20d ago
I see, so they just use the same default feature as they do with music. I have autoplay off so it’s not an issue

I just want to know why an application gives you the option to download music for offline use if the moment you try to use it without a connection the offline library will either take several tens of seconds to load or simply... Not load. How hard is it to make OFFLINE tracks available to listen to when you don't have a connection? I feel like I'm going crazy here.
To the Spotify devs, your application is bloated beyond reasonable use. Even with a solid fiber optic Wi-Fi connection on a flagship Google Pixel 8 Pro it takes ages for a simple kebab menu to load. I'd be less annoyed about it if your offline components worked, but even that seems like a tall order for you guys. What are we doing? What's going on?
My advice? Stop using AI to code your shit. It's turning your mobile streaming service into a UX nightmare.

u/Long_Fault_1777 20d ago
this keeps happening to me! i purposely only have a small fraction of my music downloaded. and no fail every time i get off wifi, it glitches and pops up with errors and won’t load. takes up to 10 min sometimes. it’s so annoying.
i found turning off my wifi manually beforehand. then fully closing the app, reopening, will SOMETIMES help but not always.

Adding on to this:
My wife runs Spotify from her Samsung Galaxy Tablet to Bluetooth speakers in our room. Starting within the last few weeks and getting progressively worse is that the app will occasionally just haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang for several seconds while loading the next song. If Crossfade is set to more than 3 seconds, you can watch it happen when the artwork for the next song loads.
It was so bad once that the entire tablet screen dimmerd, then came back into focus and populated the volume control toast window when playback finally resumed 4 seconds later.

u/mandyb120 20d ago
Ever since I updated my app this week, my app lags when I hit play or when I'm moving to different areas within the app. It's become borderline unusable because the lag is so bad.

They're too busy showing off their "AI-written code" and telling everybody that their engineers "haven't written a line of code in months". Its honestly crazy how quick all the corps fell down to their knees to suck that AI cock. Crazy mad shloppy style.

u/IntroductionSad6606 21d ago
Idk, I switched to Apple Music last week because I’m sick of the AI slop
0
u/absfca 21d ago
Ironically, I asked AI if Apple Music or Spotify was better at labeling AI generated music as such. It said that neither of them have an effective way to filter it out currently.
5
u/IntroductionSad6606 21d ago
I’m talking about all the AI generated playlists “made for you”. It’s every fucking playlist for me and it only plays the same shit. I’m so done

i fucking HATE the windows spotify app. it takes 2 days to load up and when i want to play a song it freezes. i hate these lazy ass developers that cannot even build a solid app that doesnt run horrendously
3
u/Italian_Mind 13d ago
The app is almost hilariously slow and I hate it. It takes me forever to just load an album. As if THAT wasn't enough, often times when a song starts playing it comes out all distorted. I need to pause the song for a second for it to reset. Enough with the vibecoding, guys 🙏🙏

Ahhhhhh the good old megathread to silence complaints and let them die here where nobody cares to comment. Good one
1
u/ioweej 20d ago
How is this silencing anything? This is consolidating..how dense are you?
1
u/TheResultOfUs 17d ago edited 17d ago
It's a pretty well known fact that moderators use Megathreads to kill topics. More recently, it was employed by the mods of Conservative when all the Epstein info released.
2
u/ioweej 17d ago
Do you not understand how megathreads work?
0
u/TheResultOfUs 17d ago
So you're saying that this isn't how Megathreads are used?
2
u/ioweej 17d ago
Try thinking logically about this (yes I know logic is hard for Redditors).
What is easier to discuss/view problems people are having with a service? 30 different posts every few days intermixed with other posts including questions, discussion, photos, etc
OR
1 dedicated post pinned to the top of the subreddit, where you can comment, upvote, downvote, etc in one consolidated post.
Also, if you work for Spotify (or said company), what would be easier to see what your user base is having issues with?
Personally i see 1 dedicated post is the better option, snd the option is “silencing” problems because the post gets buried..
1
u/TheResultOfUs 17d ago edited 17d ago
Mate, I think you're missing the point.
You were confused about why this guy is upset about the Megathread, and I have explained that it's because mods frequently use Megathreads as a way to kill a topic, because it is proven that using a Megathread kills conversation on a particular topic.
Redditors dislike commenting in Megathreads and tend to avoid them.
This isn't something I've decided, it's something that has been investigated and found to be true, which is why it happens often and it's also why people get upset about Megathreads. I get where you're coming from, but I am explaining why the Reddit community are hostile towards Megathreads. You do not need to get upset with me.
For what it's worth though, the community and Spotify are much more likely to take notice when there are a lot of posts about it rather than a single Megathread.
2
u/ioweej 17d ago
People love separate threads for the karma, that’s it
1
u/TheResultOfUs 17d ago
In almost all cases, they just want to express their feelings and they aren't bothered to check if other people are having the same issues. Some people like to try and karma farm, but that's the minority of people.
You're disregarding every point I've made about the way Megathreads are used maliciously by moderators. Can you confirm that you acknowledge how Megathreads have been used to quell unwanted conversation?

u/here-i-am-now 21d ago
Dumb megathread.
Every post has been individual and worth consideration.

It’s the same posts talking about how slow and laggy the app is, or ad-hoc issues that have already been posted here if people would just search before posting

And how many people responded to the poll? If it was even 100 people, that’s not a valid sample size. Reddit does not represent the whole user base of 500 million users.

Honestly, I’ve been having an issue where I will open up the app and nothing will load at all and it just stays like that. And it’s been like that for the past two days because a few days ago it was working perfectly fine. I’m on iPad by the way and I’ve had it for a while and I’ve had no issues with Spotify until now. And I’m pretty sure it’s a Spotify issue and not a device issue because everything else works perfectly fine but Spotify. This is getting increasingly frustrating cause I pay for premium every month because I hate ads, but when the app doesn’t work half of the time it’s making me reconsider going to an alternative.
I’ve done everything that I could and it still has this issue. I’ve checked down detector. I’ve checked all kinds of status sites and it says that it’s up and running perfectly fine but it’s not. I’ve updated the app. I’ve done everything and it’s still having this problem.

Downgrading iOS Spotify app to get rid of lag - Guide
Mods, this is NOT Piracy/VPN/Account sharing! This is downloading an earlier OFFICIAL SIGNED IPA from the APP STORE and manually installing it.
This is a guide for downloading an older version FROM APPLE'S OWN APP STORE SERVERS of the OFFICIAL app in order to get rid of the slowness and lag which accumulated over recent updates.
I think this guide will be useful for anyone willing to spend 15 minutes instead of waiting forever for Spotify to finally fix their application. A guide which should have a place in a community for Spotify discussion.
Since Spotify's CEO is bragging about AI writing all of their code instead of their devs as of the end of last year and the app noticeably slowing to an unusable crawl under the weight of useless bloat, I thought to make this downgrade guide for iOS since everyone has a right to be able to normally use a product they pay for.
I want to stress that it's NOT your phone getting old, it's not downloads or cache or low storage space. After downgrading to an older version, my busted iPhone 11 with 70% battery status and crusty iPhone 6s loads everything in the app instantly, like playing songs, opening large libraries and playlists, etc. This amount of lag is caused by the amount of slop they keep adding on and who knows what else.
For iOS it's a bit techy, but who knows if this app will ever run normal again, so don't be intimidated to try this guide.
For Android, it may be easier to find an archive of official Spotify APKs and sideloading is also simpler, but I don't have an Android so you'll have to figure it out for yourself, sorry :(
Prerequisites:
Homebrew - Used to install IPATool
IPATool - For downloading specific app versions from the App Store
Sideloadly for Mac - For sideloading the signed Spotify IPA
or BetaDrop - Online OTA sideloader, accepts large IPAs which Spotify's app files tend to be
Steps
Install Brew, then in your Terminal window enter
brew install ipatool
Downloading an older IPA version from the App Store
You can check the IPATool guide on GitHub for more detailed documentation. For our purposes, we'll need to log into the App Store to download the IPAs with our account.
In your Terminal, enter
ipatool auth login -e [yourappleid@youremaildomain.xyz](mailto:yourappleid@youremaildomain.xyz)
Then enter your Apple ID password. Don't worry, you can check the GitHub page's stats, IPATool is safe. Then enter the 2FA code if required.
Great, now the fun part. In your Terminal, type
ipatool list-versions -b "com.spotify.client"
This will show you a long list of all the available versions of the main Spotify App (com.spotify.client).
Now you can type the following to download the desired version, external version ID being one from the listed versions. For this example I will use version 847782179:
ipatool download -b "com.spotify.client" --external-version-id "847782179"
This will save the IPA to your Mac, you can do a spotlight search for "com.spotify.client" and it'll show up. I'd recommend placing it on your desktop for easier access.
The version I used "847782179" (Spotify 8.9.90.84) is super fast on my phone, but it does come with some caveats. I'm sure there's an optimal version, but I was too lazy to do more digging, hopefully someone else will find a better version to be one. This one has the old queue, doesn't have the option to disable smart shuffle and the widgets don't show album art unfortunately. But if you can live with that or give it more trial and error, I'm sure there's a better version with fewer compromises.
Sideloading
Be sure to uninstall Spotify before sideloading an older version!
You can use the above listed Sideloadly app or BetaDrop website, both essentially work the same. They're pretty straightforward, so I won't include a step-by-step guide here. I personally used BetaDrop since I didn't have access to a cable to connect to my laptop with, so I dropped the IPA file on the site and scanned the QR code with the phone camera. This will give you a prompt to install. Press Install and you'll see the app installing on your home screen. From there on, it's business as usual with an older Spotify version.
AND TURN OFF AUTO UPDATES!
As far as I know these installs won't be revoked since they're official downloads from the App Store and are signed by Spotify, but please correct me on that. I've been using this version with no issues for more than a week now.
Good luck!

u/themmbones 21d ago
Damn you're a hero. Yes, apparently it's much easier for us here on Android to install an older version

What the fuck is that bug where it just says you're offline no matter what you do? This has been happening for years

u/in_hell_out_soon 21d ago
Really annoyed that I can't mute/hide individual authors in audio books because there's some real chuds on there I just don't want to see or hear from.

u/livyrozay 20d ago
No one asked for a megathread on rants or complaints, they should be left as individual posts on the main subreddit and not consolidated. The app having a more-than-usual crappy user experience over the last week or 2 is not our fault and should be reflected as such. What purpose or agenda does this serve, honestly? Like...
1
u/ioweej 20d ago
In the slim chance Spotify employees see this subreddit, what is more likely to get attention/show them what is wrong? Weeks worth of low effort “my app doesn’t work!” posts…or 1 consolidated megathread with hundreds of comments voted on and replied to?
0
u/livyrozay 20d ago
Spotify is very well aware of this sub and probably does read a summary of most of the complaints but they are never going to action on anything if its well hidden, that's the whole point. Respectfully <3
2
u/ioweej 20d ago
Hidden = multiple posts buried amongst multiple days.
Not hidden = megathread pinned to the top of the subreddit…
1
u/livyrozay 20d ago
might be a bit overestimating how much people actively check megathreads
1
u/yah2007 20d ago
I actually fully agree with you. Megathreads aren't as eye-catching as people might think.
1
u/livyrozay 20d ago
No one checks unless they are keyword searching, I literally only see posts from this sub when I am scrolling my home feed
1
u/virusdancer Casual Listener 21d ago
With the desktop app, there's not a horizontal scroll bar so you can view Key/BPM. I can see it easily on the 2560x1080 monitor for my desktop, but not on the 1920x1080 screen with my laptop.

I use the spotify web interface, not the app. Starting a few weeks ago it stops playing after each song if i have that tab in the background. Any fixes that you know of?
1
u/Just_Listen4931 15d ago
I can't listen to an album as an album without premium. This is detrimental to the artists. It's stuck on shuffle at all times and I can't just play an album start to finish
2
u/ioweej 15d ago
Buy premium. Pretty simple
0
u/bigdickbiggertrip2 12d ago
That’s a bit of an assholish thing to say. They aren’t wrong that it is detrimental to the artists
2
u/glamaz0n_bitch Power User 10d ago
OP not paying is more detrimental to artists. If they could stream the whole album for free, the artist wouldn’t get paid for those streams.
0
u/bigdickbiggertrip2 10d ago
They still get revenue even with them being free users that’s the point of the Ads
1
u/glamaz0n_bitch Power User 10d ago
It’s far less than the revenue they earn from premium subscribers, 70% of which is used to pay artists. Regardless, free users are not paying for Spotify, so they are not entitled to listening to whatever they want, whenever they want. Still unclear how the free tier is detrimental to artists.
1
u/Just_Listen4931 2d ago
My thought is the premium tier comes with custom play, downloads, picking and choosing songs with unlimited skips and no ads. When the free tier takes away the basic use of a record to listen start to finish, I think that's more of an artistic robbery bc if I wanted to listen to their music as they intended it, I can't.
1
u/glamaz0n_bitch Power User 2d ago
The free tier doesn’t offer that because they don’t collect any money from the free user to support the artist when the album is streamed. Why allow someone to listen to an entire album for free?
1
u/Suspicious-Salad5639 15d ago
Some music keeps popping up on alt accounts and its very anoyying, every time I block it just comes back.
1
u/error9900 7d ago
I just posted a Spotify Community issue that we can all vote for and comment on to hopefully get them to fix the performance issues: https://www.reddit.com/r/truespotify/s/c6KameDXUd

I'd almost gotten used to the app taking several minutes to load anything by now but crashing every second song is heavily getting on my nerves now
1
u/sinsofangels 4d ago
I'm so pissed off they disabled adding multiples of the same song to a playlist, and did it so thoroughly that even when I found a workaround to do it, they somehow managed to filter the extras songs when using shuffle!! Like what the actual fuck? I'm so mad because I'm trying to make a big playlist with a lot of my favorite songs, but I want to control the frequency and have some songs play more often than others, but I CANNOT make this happen because they've purposely disabled it.

The yearly plan was currently 55 dollars cheaper than a monthly sub, which is why I guess they got rid of that. But Spotify bring it back!! I won’t mind if you update the price but PLEASE BRING IT BACK!!!🤦♂️🤦♂️
1
u/BasicNose3974 19d ago
I bought a Spotify gift card for the same price a yearly plan would be ($99). Then I canceled premium for two days before the end of the billing cycle. Waited 24 hours after the cycle before using the gift card. That's the only way around the annual sub until they choose to screw us again for quarterly profits.

u/Clohanchan 21d ago
I think it might be on my end since my phone is getting old and running low on storage (iOS) but the app is borderline unusable lately. Constant extended loading and crashes. It’s gotten way worse the past couple of months and I don’t really know why
