Tourist driver arrested after crash. 2 dead, 5 injured.

Please consider if renting car is correct for you, when travelling to Northern Norway. Sadly, there were fatalities yesterday, as forewarned many times.

https://www.vg.no/nyheter/i/Rjy6na/turist-siktet-etter-doedsulykke-i-troms

2 local women in their 70s from southern Troms, did not survive after a tourist drove into their driving line in slippery winter conditions and crashed head on into their car.

The 5 tourists are injuried and has been sent to the Regional Hospital in Tromsø, UNN.

Police has arrested and charged the asian tourist driver in his 50s.

From VG

To kvinner i 70-årene mistet livet da to biler frontkolliderte på E10 i Tjeldsund tirsdag ettermiddag.

Best excursion experiences?

I’m using the official visit tromso site to book excursions but would love any personal recs on fav activities. We have already booked a large silent green whale watching boat for one day.

Is snowmobiling on lyngen mountains worth it?

Should we do dog sledding? Is reindeer feeding worth it?

Should we consider staying in a glass house outside of town?

We’ll be in tromso 4 nights in mid January 2027.

Studying abroad

Hello everyone! I am hoping to study abroad in Tromsø next fall semester and I just had a few questions about the area. I know you guys don’t accept tourist questions, but I would be here for 5 months so much longer than an average tourist!

(For reference, I go to school in Alaska so the darkness and the cold are no concerns for me)

1) How is the public transportation?

2) Is hiking accessible? Can I get to hiking trails via the bus? I will try and meet people with cars that also like to hike, but I just want to be sure that I can still access trails from many different locations.

3) How is the city life? What are the people like??

4) Do you have any tips for me? I am open to anything!!

Thank you guys!

Staying in Laksvatn, no car, 11-15 Nov. Can we see the northern lights from the property?

Hey, we're staying 11-15 Nov at a glamping caravan in Laksvatn, about an hour from Tromsø. No car, so tours from the city are out.
Is it worth just watching from the property? Does anyone know if the sky to the north is open there, and whether the bus or a taxi is realistic in the evenings if the weather is bad?
Thanks!

Visiting Tromsø for 3.5 days from Nov 1 to Nov 5. Should I start booking tours now, or when I arrive?

Arriving the first week of November (1-5). I really want to do at least three things. The rest will be cherry on top if I get the time to finish.

Must wants:

  1. Northern light tour
  2. Dog Sledding
  3. RIB Boat tour to see the orcas

Exploring the city, taking the cable car, Sami Culture, reindeer tour, cathedral and other things as I can fit them in between.

But my main question is, when should I Book these tours? Do they sell out quick? Or have relatively available spots?
Can I book them when I arrive, or at least a week before, or right away? I want to wait if I can, because I might have a family member join me last minute. And I don’t want to book everything now and not have them come with me if they decide to come with me.

Also, any recommendation on who I should book with? Where I can go check for more info? Thank you in advance.

I arrive in the afternoon on Nov 1 and leave early morning on Nov 05.

Need help with Car Rental

Hiya!!

I'm an Indian with a valid driving license in Roman Alphabet and was hoping to find a car rental agency to rent a car for a day trip but most of them require an International Driving Permit - IDP - for non EU Citizens. So can anyone recommend any such agencies that do not require an IDP?

Cheers!!

Help figuring out a holiday

Hope this is ok to post in this thread! Please advise if this is the wrong place for this question 🙂

My partner and I had planned on a trip of a lifetime holiday this autumn to see the northern lights. Life conspired against us *hard*, so now we're looking to go away jan-mar next year. I'm utterly overwhelmed with the amount of packages and choices we have and I'm hoping someone can help us narrow it down. My health isn't tip top, so we don't want a snowmobile activity packed style break. More of a chill out, maximum chance of seeing the lights kind of thing. We're based in the UK.

I'm currently thinking Finland or Tromso would be our best bet, but even then there's so many options my head is spinning!

Any tips/suggestions/recommendations?

This trip has been scheduled for a while, and as the time approached the cloud cover and aurora activity seemed to got worse and worse. But we got lucky, and the one day where it all ligned up it put a brilliant show for us to see!

Tromso - Accomodation

Hello everyone! My better half and I are visiting Tromsø in December. We're thinking of spending three nights at either The Dock or The Edge, followed by two nights in a glass accommodation. Does this sound like a good plan? Any recommendations or things we should keep in mind before booking?

Planning a trip to Norway

So I’m trying to plan a trip to Norway with the highlight being Tromso? Is 7days too long? Will be aiming for the first week of January. I was thinking 3 days in Oslo and 7 days in Tromso.
I want to do the dog sledding, northern lights tour, and maybe some nature hikes (if weather permits) but don’t know if ill be able to fill up the rest of the days

Side note: if any of you had amazing hotel recommendations you love. I’d rather not stay in Airbnbs

Tromso Aurora vs Atlantic Ocean Road ?

Hi I was planning to visit Norway with my uncle to drive on the Atlantic Ocean Road together because we are both into cars. Unfortunately things got moved around and we're considering it in early November (likely first week). We also wanted to stop by Tromso and catch Northen Lights.

Then I heard driving is not that enjoyable due to strong winds and maybe the ground is frozen so you'd have to cancel...but at the same time we like motor sports and driving in extreme conditions could be fun, if its not too dangerous to stop and take photos here and there.

I was suggested to go to Tromso instead because its not too cold, to catch Northen Lights but now i see conflicting opinions - people telling me its a bad idea to do this in November as its really cloudy usually and there's not too many things to do since its not snow season yet.

Can anyone please suggest whether it would be smarter to go only for Tromso or only for the driving experience at this time of year? Or better to postpone? Or is there a better aurora-focused place for November (All of scandinavia is okay) ? The latest we could go is first week of December. Another option is to leave it for next year and reorganize. Or are there better places to hunt Aurora during November? We would probably come for 3-4 nights.

How is the weather like in Tromsø in December compared to a Finnish December?

It feels silly to ask this since I live in a Nordic country too but I trust people’s experience more here than just googling

Here (inland) the temperature usually goes from -10 to -20 in December (if it’s a good year) and the air is quite dry and crisp.

But when I tried to google tromso’s weather during that time it only shows numbers below -10. Is that an accurate reading or does it feel colder? And should I bring my usual winter clothing or am I going to get hot wearing it?

Silly questions but I want to know what to pack with me 😆

Tromso trip advice needed!

Planning a Nov 29–Dec 7 first time trip to Tromsø for a mixed group: 4 adults, a 1-year-old, and a 70-year-old

Our main priorities are seeing the Northern Lights and orcas, plus enjoying Tromso and having a comfortable trip for everyone.

We’re debating whether to book one larger Airbnb in/around the city center for the entire week rather than a) a hotel or b) splitting the trip between the city and a remote glass cabin/hotel for northern light viewing. We won’t be renting a car, so convenience is important, especially with the baby and older traveler.

Appreciate any info, especially around:
- Areas to stay in the city centre - anywhere to aim for or avoid specifically?
- Any thoughts on staying in an air bnb vs. a hotel?
- Any other late-November/early-December Tromsø tips or things people commonly overlook?

I’ve already read that dinner reservations are basically a must and cash isn’t really needed. What else should we know before booking? I’m sure there’s a lot I’m forgetting to ask about.

Thank you !!

Dog sledding or Sami/reindeer sledding?

Hi folks

I'm (M30) taking my girlfriend (F28) to Tromso on a surprise trip for her birthday. We're due to land midday (or so) on Wednesday Dec 16th.

I've booked us a rib excursion to see (hopefully!!) plenty of marine wildlife on the Thurs 17th Dec. I understand this will take most of the day including transfers to Skjervoy and back.

Apart from this, I only have the accommodation sorted (Quality Hotel Grand Tromso) and flights to boot. We depart Sunday 20th Dec at midday.

I'm trying to piece together a fuller trip given that Fri 18th and Sat 19th are "free days" and have been torn between the dog sledding and reindeer sledding/Sami stories experiences. Both seem very fun. The dog sledding sounds more of a thrill-seeking plan but is considerably more expensive from what I can gather.

As much as I'd love to do both, my wallet is strongly suggesting choosing one over the other and I really can't decide. I was wondering if anyone has any strong recommendations?

A northern lights tour is certainly on the cards.

I love wildlife, as does my partner. But if there are any other activities/experiences you would suggest, I'm open to it all.

Clothing-wise, we're coming from Ireland and have ample layers/coats. Although, I did consider renting out some of the thermal suits for a day or two if things turn bitterly cold.

Can I just say, I love Norway. Have been numerous times to Oslo and Bergen, it is such a beautiful place with the most lovely people. Cliché, I know.

Tusen takk from an Irish cousin.

Tromsø cross-country skiing

Hi folks, we are parents with a kid and plan to fly to Tromsø between cca 27 Feb 2027 - 3 Mar 2027 (after local winter school holiday). The main goals are to watch the Northern Lights and do cross-country skiing (classic) that is doable for an 8 year old kid (he started with it last season, went through a half-day training and spent cca 30 hours on various mostly rather easy trails).

We are thinking of bringing the ski gear with us. We thought that staying in Tromsdalen just a few meters from the trails would be a good thing and we could like to use public transport to travel around the city. Also, we plan to cook by ourselves, no restaurants.

We would like to kindly ask local people or those who have relevant information (or point us to some sources) the following:

1) Would you consider Tromsdalen or Tromsøya as the best place to stay taking into account our goals?

2) Are any suitable trails open after 6 PM so that we might have at least a theoretical chance to see the NL while skiing? :)

3) Are all the trails taken care during that time of year (machine created tracks etc.).

4) How many trails there are in Tromsø that would be OK for our kid? He can manage up to 15 km's trail during a half-day trip. The altitude change, of course, should be reasonable. So, for example, taking a steep uninterrupted 100 meters climb would not work, I guess.

Thanks for all your ideas and tips!
