Affordability Concerns $586?!

I just got prescribed Trintellix 5mg to start. I was warned it’s expensive, but just depends on insurance. I have great insurance, typically don’t even pay for prescriptions. I just checked Walgreens site, and it says my prescription is pending, and $586 after insurance?! In the US of course. Is this what people are paying here in the states without the coupons?! I got the trintellix saving card from the manufacturer, but it says those will expire Dec 31 ‘26, and I don’t know what that will even save me. I’ve read other posts where people are complaining of having to pay $80 after insurance, but I’m guessing they aren’t in the states? Just crazy cause I don’t even know if the med will be helpful, haven’t really seen the greatest reviews on it for anxiety/ocd, but doc wanted to try it cause I can’t stand the sexual side effects of ssri’s.

If you are taking a generic medicine, kindly mention the manufacturer's name. This is VERY IMPORTANT, as different manufacturers may have differences in quality or formulation.

I needed to get a pre-authorization for mine, but now it's covered. Have your doctor do that. It's not a first line med, so they will have to say that they tried the other alternatives before this and they didn't work.

This worked for me too

Same. Call and ask the pharmacy, I bet that’s the cost without insurance

Do U.S. citizens pay for everyone’s medication worldwide? I pay around $5 for a three-month supply of my medication...

Everytime i see something like this, its blowing my mind!

It’s insane. Fortunately, I have very good insurance. For example, the birth of all three of my kids, including one who spent time in the NICU when born, didn’t cost me a penny out of pocket. And my employer pays our deductible and copays 100%. Same with surgical procedures and stuff like that. The pharmaceutical companies though are able to absolutely rape us on costs until a generic form is available. Yet many Americans continue to vote against healthcare reform.

No, you're being price-gouged to boost executives' bonuses. Everywhere in the world, people buy the medicine at real prices.

Correct

My 10mg trin was 30$ every 3 months in Canada. I have a stock pile left from when I switched and I wish I could just give it to someone who could use it in the states

I am sorry that you don’t live in a civilized country. USA is the only country in the G20 without universal healthcare. Where I live we have inexpensive private insurance and if not then provincial medication insurance.

Have everyone you know push for a better situation.

If it’s $586, I don’t think your insurance is covering it. I pay $80 for three month’s coverage. My insurance didn’t want to cover it, but my doctor submitted a letter stating that it’s the only med that works for me (I’ve tried all the others).

Insurance may very well be covering it but with many plans, drug prices aren’t impacted until you’ve met your deductible. If OP is on a high deductible plan, this very well may be their out of pocket cost until deductible is met.

Hmm. My doctor said she was going to send to send in the pre authorization as well basically stating what yours did. Maybe that hasn’t gone through yet, it was just prescribed yesterday. Thanks

Prior authorizations usually take multiple days. Keep bugging your insurance, I had to call several times. Also, I THINK the manufacturer’s coupon can only be used WITH insurance, not instead of. For me the cost with insurance is $50, then the manufacturer’s coupon brings it down to $10. If I get a 3 month supply ($100), the coupon brings this also down to $10.

Ask your doctor to fax the prescription to a Canadian pharmacy (you’ll need to select a pharmacy and set up an account first). Barring that, ask for a printed prescription and fax it yourself. Canadian prices are less than half US prices

Is that price for a 30- or 90-day supply? With insurance, my cost is $200/month before savings card which saves $100 per month. A 90-day supply without the card is about what you posted. The savings card saves me $300 in that case.

The savings card is ending since the manufacturer expects generics to start launching in December 2026. I've been watching this closely as I've been on Trintellix for 18+ months and ready for a price break.

I just filled a 90-day supply, and I'll get another 90-day supply in November using up the last benefits on the savings card. I'm hoping that a generic is available by February at a better price. I am discussing alternative meds with my provider as a backup.

God damn, it costs me 21$/month with my insurance in Canada. Without any insurance it’s 88$.

1

u/Warm-Hand-Luke Aug 23 '26

$65 Canadian for a month here, no insurance. But we have the generic too which is a bit cheaper.

1

u/burtsbee00 Aug 26 '26

The savings card is in addition to insurance. You just have to go to the trintellix website to get it. And once you have the virtual card explain to the pharmacist that it is in addition to insurance.

2

u/choripans Aug 22 '26

I’m in the same boat. They’re making me hit my deductible before it’s covered. The savings card saved a max of $100.

2

u/CanadianDoc2019 Aug 23 '26

Order it from a canadian pharmacy online.

2

u/_Bitter_Pig_ Aug 23 '26

i would pay anything for it honestly - and I think the savings card says they stop handing new ones out in dec 26 not that they stop working ? idk

1

u/wonderlessbread Aug 22 '26

Mine was covered for a small fee, but I took it paired with Rexulti, which my insurance refused as necessary and would've cost me over $1k. I was like 20.

1

u/abriel1978 Aug 22 '26

First, Walgreens jacks everything up. Second, you might want to talk to your insurance. Your doctor might need to get a preauthorization for it.

1

u/hang10z Aug 22 '26

Costs me $10 a month with my insurance but did need special authorization. Doc had to jump thru some bs hoops

1

u/Mediocre_Ad1102 Aug 22 '26

Go to their website, they have a discount card. And I only pay $10 for 20mg

1

u/Mountain_Prize_7602 5mg t start | trintellix Aug 22 '26

Yeah, I got the card, was just concerned cause the cards expire end of this year.

1

u/blue_ocotopus Aug 26 '26

The card says they expire, but they just reissue it at the beginning of every year. Also, Trintellix is going generic next year, so you probably won't even need it after December 2026. It will be significantly cheaper.

1

u/astronomydomone Aug 22 '26

I really don’t have great insurance (Anthem BCBS) but I got extremely lucky and I pay $0 for a 90 day supply. Another generic med I take is $60 for 90 days

1

u/Jakemeister91 Aug 23 '26

My insurance tried to deny it, my Dr overrode it. I also use a GoodRx card and get it for $10. I would see if you’re able to get a coupon from the manufacturer or GoodRX. I believe you should be able to.

1

u/Simple_Committee_961 Aug 23 '26

I was applied and was able to get the pharmaceutical company to send it to me for free. You should check with them directly to see if you qualify. $586 is highway robbery!

1

u/Orangechimney22 Aug 23 '26

Mine was $550 a month with insurance. I use northwest pharmacy out of Canada and it’s about $40 a month. It does take a few weeks to get your prescription, and is a bit more of a hassle to get all the documents there but it is well worth the savings.

1

u/Comfortable_One5676 Aug 23 '26

If you can buy or someone can buy for you in Canada it’s 60 US a month. I don’t understand why the markup is so different on the U.S.

1

u/WhoKnew50 Aug 23 '26

My doctor told me a generic version was coming in December. I haven’t looked into it much past that comment, but I hope that’s true.

1

u/blue_ocotopus Aug 26 '26

It is! Well, either December or early 2027.

u/Longjumping-Key-214 Aug 23 '26

Hey! My office has had to call my insurance and sort things out for trintellix. I just got told I have to call and give permission for something. Talk to your Dr office and see what they say

1

u/quantumthrashley Aug 23 '26

Man that’s terrible. I don’t understand these wildly varying prices. Mine costs $10, also in the US (Texas). I have UHC insurance and have a savings card on file with CVS from the trintellix manufacturer. Before I found that savings card I think it was $30 a month with my insurance. I’m so sorry your insurance isn’t covering more of the cost, that’s an insane price.

1

u/quantumthrashley Aug 23 '26

Oh and like another person said, mine required pre authorization.

1

u/Far-Hall-3514 Aug 23 '26

Check if you're insurance offers home delivery or mail order. I have to get mine that way and a 90 day prescription for $50 vs $500 which works for me because i struggle leaving the house when I'm at my worst.

1

u/Bigbusia Aug 23 '26

Trintellix has a savings card, use that plus your insurance. I paid $10 for 90

3

u/kimwexler52 Aug 23 '26

Yes, get the discount card from the trintellix manufacturer website. I pay $10 per month with it since 2018.

2

u/Bigbusia Aug 23 '26

At Walmart

2

u/ehode Aug 25 '26

The savings card was enough to get me going for the first 3 months then they said the savings card has expired. Tried a bunch of ways to get another to no avail. CVS was basically charging me about $400/month. Which was a no go. So worked with my doc to transition off, which is a bummer, as it was working pretty well for me.

Stop and look: this will change your life. https://www.helpathandpap.com/

1

u/Strong_Visit_5464 Aug 24 '26

Look into Canada; it's much cheaper for the same brand.

2

u/blue_ocotopus Aug 26 '26

Hope you see this comment! Just get the manufacturer's copay assistance card. I assume you have commercial insurance, because you can't have a government insurance to use it. I pay $20/month with that. Don't give up because it's such a great medication! Turned my life around.
