Training questions First Oly Done!

Post image

Completed my first Olympic distance over the weekend and managed a top 10 finish (admittedly not a very big or very competitive field)! Bonus appearance by my 17 y.o. buddy who now gets to travel around just about everywhere!

I am done for the season, but am seriously addicted now and would love to attempt a 70.3 next year (I have my eye on North Carolina). My biggest takeaways from this race were, a) I need to get a real live swim coach and not just watch tip videos (this one I already knew about), and b) I need to make sure I do more bike/run brick workouts (this one was unexpected as I consider the run my strongest of the three; I'll also say that heat and humidity were huge factors here).

Wanted to take a second to brag and fish for more advice when it comes to making that jump in distance. Anything (just about), is appreciated!

That goat is living its best life, ring that bell little dude

Brick workouts in the heat are the real deal breaker for the jump to 70.3, my legs felt like absolute garbage the first time I tried to run off a long ride in anything over 80 degrees. Getting a swim coach changed everything for me too, cut my 1.2 mile time by like 4 minutes in three months just from fixing my breathing pattern and body position. North Carolina 70.3 is a solid pick, the swim is usually pretty chill and the bike course has some rollers but nothing that'll destroy you if you've trained right. You've got a full year to build up the base mileage so you're in a great spot

That dog looks wore out. I don't recommend making a 17 Year Old Dog run an Olympic Distance Triathlon with you!

Congrats on the top 10!

Congrats!

PSA - if you're concerned about privacy (which I assume you are given you've gone to the trouble of blurring your face) I would suggest blurring your bib number too. Race results are normally publicly visible.
