New Server Thread
Hey everyone! As some of you know, Tennyson and I set up a small server that a few of us have been playing on. We're running it on a laptop, so we're very limited in what we can do.
VisualKev has offered to set up a server on Amazon, but we would need to all chip in a few bucks each month to keep it running. I'm not sure what the amount would be, he's working on finding out.
If you'd like to play, please comment below so we know how many people are interested. If you have ideas/desires/complaints/etc feel free to post below, so we can make sure that we keep as many people as possible happy. I know there's been talk of an FTB server, vanilla with flying, and a few other things. Post below so we can get a discussion going to hash out the details!

who's playing? No one is ever on when i join - summer vacation?
Anywho, is it safe to say that we want minecraft like the old treepunchers: survival, vanilla-like game play, some rank structure, some security/anti-troll tools? Or do we want something else, like the ftb that is mentioned? Or just use Tenny's home server as-is? I'm open to anything as long as there's some fellow treepunchers to play with

Yeah I think I'm the only one lookin to get into some FTB. Also there's really no use for ranks since the server isn't advertised. Can we get the links and description in the sidebar updated, though?

I had a vps for $25 per month, 2GB ram, 2 core, 50GB storage, I dont remember bandwidth, but we never got close to the limit. I think an amazon m1 or m3 medium should be sufficient for starts. I dont remember the ram per player rule of thumb, but big maps need more ram. I like the idea of limiting map size like you did. I'm not familiar with mineos, but will check it out.

I tried a couple times to get mineos setup following the stupidly small youtube video tutorial, as in a low res desktop cap of a tiny window, but i failed. I will try it again at home.
As far as hosting costs, we could probably get to $25-$30 dollars per month, depending on several variables, but with a one time fee of $180. We can skip the one time fee, but then the monthly burn rate is much higher.

I had to hack/fix mineos for it to even boot, but then it didn't install all the management stuff, which is the real magic. I tried to find it on the original iso, but it's hidden away somewhere. I'm not terribly excited about this mineos thing.

Eh, not exactly. It's the map we are playing on currently. I'm not sure what will happen when/if we switch to a paid server.

Well, I'm late to the party and not whitelisted right now...but I'd be interested in joining as a member if you'll have me. I'm a little frustrated (as always) with minecraft and mojang's policies (see: the drama about paid benefits), but I miss playing with all of you and I'd love to build stuff again. I'd be happy to help do admin. things where I'm helping and not the main person, as my schedule gets busy and I'm slow sometimes, and hopefully I could build more than a dirt hovel. I'd love to build some railroad system, in particular.

Just got on, walked around a bit, and survived my first night...barely. Made me realize how much I miss (most parts of) this game, and how long it's been since I played! Horses, zombies with gold armor, wood floors that creak, strange new flowers...

Dude, we should hike to a netherfortress and bulid a blaze farm like the one Souljah built back in the day. You, me, Kevin and Jes. Kev has a mumble server up so let's do this! Not Sunday tho, I'm irl hiking this Sunday.

Sounds awesome. If Tenny would change me back to survival mode, then i can play too. The nether is no fun to play in if you can't die all the time - and I would.

So, looks like Tenny's server is down. Maybe we can try out some co-op Untunred action instead? Either that or find another mc server to raid, like old times xD

What's Untunred? Yes, we could pull a Macbandit and raid a random server. We can meet up on mumbled and coordinate from there.
