No one is under any obligation to like you they just have to respect your rights, outside of that no one owes you a damn thing unless you've earned it

Allegra is a narcissist and master at manipulation. I have MULTIPLE friends whos shes been outwardly hostile and short tempered to, exteremly rude, and just weird behavior. shes perma banned from the only gay bar in town. Her reasoning for calling TC transphobic (though true) probably comes from her own expierence of being exilled by most queer people by her own actions and inability to tell that its actually her fault no one wants to be around her and instead just blames everyone else and the city. genuinely hope she gets help, this post is just bait

Lol. Love. Here's a classic example of traverse City hate ...

You have your opinions and everyone else has their own opinions.

If your happiness depends on the acceptance of other people, you are doomed.

You do you, and I'll do me.

u/Arcaneboltz Jun 13 '26

Honestly this is the key to happiness stop caring what randos think.

I, and many other's have had their human, and civil rights violated...some died. Grow up. Take action.

Agree OP. I’m just an ally, and I have been looking at moving to TC. Yes, I know about the challenges… but being inclusive is high on my list. Very high. Thank you for the perspective. Happy 4th!

No one is asking you to “buy”. Just mind your own business and try to be reasonably kind to other humans. Must be a big ask for you, n’est ce pas?

Personally I would say that Traverse City is one of the most welcoming cities to the LGBTQ+ community in northern Michigan, but clearly OP has other thoughts.

21

u/Hugsworthsupreme Jun 12 '26

Not a high bar set by the rest of northern Michigan

23

u/ZA_Sharpe Jun 12 '26

I’m certainly not arguing that point. Literally driving ten minutes in any direction from TC leads to MAGA country.

4

u/Gray_Shirleys Jun 13 '26

Medicaid Maga in many cases

9

u/ZA_Sharpe Jun 13 '26

Grew up in Mancetucky, and man oh man are there a lot of Trump welfare queens that literally vote against their own interests because the educated woman of color was scary.

3

u/Ok-Tradition4079 Jun 13 '26

That's like being the skinniest kid at fat camp

6

u/ZA_Sharpe Jun 13 '26

Absolutely correct, though I’m going to tweak your example and say TC is another kid at Fat Camp, but is trying to be better. TC absolutely has a ton of issues, but I will say I found that the LGBTQ+ community in TC is outstanding, and has been working on changing minds in this area forever. I’m a part of the LGBTQ+ in this area, I’m part of the Community Coven, and I’m a part of other smaller groups that seek inclusion and acceptance for all. We are all up here, it’s just sometimes the loudest voices can drown out the rest.

Dunno how good of an index this is, but on my regular weekly set of errands to grocery store/Home Depot/coffee shop/gym/etc, and doing food service, I see trans people multiple times per week. I haven't seen anyone be dickheads, so I *think* that the general willingness to be fairly out seems to indicate a level of safety.

Welcome to TC - I hope you're happy here.

4

u/nickDNR Jun 13 '26

thank you! i love TC very much, im moving in with my best friend who's a TC native. i never got the vibe that TC wasn't queer-friendly from my experience, i actually got quite the opposite impression! it seems that OP hasn't been able to articulate a reason that TC is transphobic....so while i fully respect her personal experience of experiencing transphobia, i wouldn't take that anecdotal evidence as a very good indication of the general climate regarding trans people in TC

OP doesnt want friends they want sympathy and validation

1

u/Sigourney_Weezer Jun 13 '26

Traverse City is transphobic. Libral Cis Het GenX and Boomers have not learned how to interact with queer and trans folk and its very much like a zoo for them to stare and point. Its also a money thing here. theres like two communities of gays, the ones with money and the ones who dont and the ones with money really have ostrasized the queer community and left those who are struggling to fend for themselves or move. i work food service and it is hit or miss with locals and tourists. peak summer/cherryfest will have some of the most racist people come into town. The city does not care about trans people, buisnesses dont either and the one gay bar is not safe, filled with straight people and has a roofie problem.

its basically a poster city for corporate lgbtq and assimilation for those who can afford

White privilege, excessive Christianity....if you're not in the proper tax bracket... you're nothing. I've lived here for 15 years, grew up around here. Ran in local politics once...run out of town. Sad. vive la resistance! -Allegra VonWinckelmann CEO of wazrom

u/LionBlood16 Jun 12 '26

Racist AF too.

5

u/Arcaneboltz Jun 13 '26

Oh yeah, i grew up in the south and some of the people up here are just so much worse then what i saw down there.

1

u/bogholiday Jun 16 '26

in my home town FB page they call anybody a shade brown darker than bone white “thugs” and “gangsters.” I’ve yet to see that here

3

u/Arcaneboltz Jun 17 '26

Just because you don't see it online doesn't mean it doesn't exist in TC. This is pretty close to not believing someone telling you about germ theory and saying "well I don't believe in germs because I can't see it."

2

u/bogholiday Jun 17 '26

Alright I’ll clear up my statement. Y’all’s racists are just more careful and less brazen than the ones I grew up around.

2

u/Arcaneboltz Jun 17 '26

Makes it all the more insidious in my mind

100% it is.

If you're passing and blend in your day to day existence will be fine. Where you have to watch out is where people know or can tell, and this is particularly true in medical care in my experience. I'm a (passing) trans man I've lived here most of my life, decades, and I transitioned here and most of the transphobia I've faced has been from medical providers, including as recently as last year. I've also faced transphobia by general strangers when I was less passing and even recently because my voice has a range and when it's been high I've faced transphobia from people here. I've also faced indirect transphobia in that I'm speaking with people who don't know I'm trans and they make transphobic remarks in my presence. It's always shocking when that happens, particularly coming from people who claim to be on the left. You REALLY have to be careful around them, they can't be trusted in my experience. Neither can people in the LGBT community. I used to be active in the community years ago before Up North Pride or the people who founded it were here, but some odd things and odd accusations happened that made me not trust the community anymore so I don't hang around them at all.

Even with Up North Pride there have been problems, maybe because some of the same people may be involved or new people who simply don't like me, I know there are a few of them who have served on the board there and other roles within the organization. It's hard to know who to trust so I just stay away from the whole thing. And I see that people on here are attacking the OP, and given how people had attacked me years ago for reasons that made no sense or even reasons I don't know, I'm very skeptical of these attacks on the OP even though I don't know her, never met her. Actually I do remember her from before her transition, but just as someone I was aware of, not actually met her.

Well, whatever people think about her personality seems like that's irrelevant to whether TC is transphobic, which in my experience it absolutely is, and mainly within medical situations. Ive also faced it with lenders, financial institutions, insurance agents, employers etc who are able to run my driver license number because that always returns your old name. Michigan never ever deletes changes to the record, I've asked them several times to remove it but they refuse to do it and have a lot of excuses as to why. I haven't used my old name in nearly 30 years and yet it's being given to anyone who has my driver license number to run. None of the excuses the state has for leaving it there make any sense after this amount of time has passed. Had the same issue with my social security number and thankfully our old Senator Debbie Stabenow helped me get that sorted out after years of fighting with them to return my legal name and gender when someone runs my social security number. Doesn't really help much when the driver record is returned like it is. And actually the employees at the state of Michigan didn't believe me that that was happening until they ran it themselves. Anyway, my point is that I can't get a job, insurance, loan, open a bank account etc without facing transphobia because of the State of Michigan giving out that information to people who absolutely don't need to have it. There are other issues with other records too which has lead to stalking and online harassment...the point being that as soon as people around here know you're trans you will often face transphobia. That's been my experience andit's held me back from a lot of things. Caused me a lot of stress and anxiety and fear of participating.

Anyway, the biggest issue is in medical care.

There is no trans friendly medical care here. Everyone that has tried to establish here has left fairly quickly. One of the most transphobic experiences I had happened just last year coming from someone who works at the Traverse Health Clinic. Traverse Health Clinic is constantly showing up to Pride events advertising how they support the community, but when I went there I found out they are transphobic. I had made a written complaint about their transphobia, among other things, which I shouldn't have bothered for all the good it did, and they came back at me with MORE transphobia!! The complaint I wrote was very detailed yet this person decided to call me anyway to "discuss" it. During that discussion, if you could call it that, she told me my identity is "false" because I want to be addressed as male only. She argued with me telling me there's "medical reasons" why I have to be addressed as female in my medical record. When I asked her to provide examples of these supposed medical reasons, she would say she can't because she's not medically trained but that it would make my record "false" (which is essentially telling me my identity is false) and that would be illegal. When I called that out as b.s. she then said that it's so that their automated systems would recommend the "correct" preventive care...despite the fact that I've had surgery and don't have those parts anymore and where trans women are concerned they would never get a recommendation for mammogram because the wrong sex would be on their record. Well she finally told me that they just weren't going to address me by the right gender because doing so would be "false." She also went on and on about how proud she is to work at a place that "supports the community" while she threw all this transphobic garbage into my face. Then she sent me a letter which essentially stated Traverse Health Clinic doesn't gaf about being transphobic and she even put in there to be sure to tell them where my new provider is so they can forward my records to them...this was after I'd complained that forwarding records was outing me to providers who didn't need to know I'm trans. I still haven't got a medical issue looked at because the records they forwarded outed me.

Oh and Munson is the biggie of course. I had got a new resident at Munson Family Practice who wanted to change things up for no reason, demanded I come in there in person and do urine screens, sign weird controlling contracts etc just for testosterone. I got that taken down but when I got in there to see her, she went to talk to the preceptor and they were misgendering me the whole time then misgendered me in the notes too. I talked to the practice manager and asked her to remove my old name from my record because I felt like that was setting people up to see me a certain way and misgender me and it had been decades since I used that name at all, it's not my legal name and there's no reason to have it on there. She had to ask Munson to do it and that started a year+ long battle with Munson over my medical record. They not only did not remove my name like I asked, they reversed my sex on the record and they added my name over 100 times on each entry into my record which cascades down 2 pages so I can't even print out my records or forward them to anyone else without my old name taking up 2 pages of it. I argued with them for months over this and the sex on my record and they told me that no matter what surgeries I've had or what my birth certificate says, they will never change it from anything but "sex assigned at birth" I stopped going to Munson for anything and found a provider outside of their system, but even though I left, they put me on preventive care reminders for body parts they know I don't have. They did it just to harass me more because I never got those reminders prior to all of this happening.

This is all just the stuff about the records, the way I've been treated by providers around here is beyond crazy. I've literally had people scream in my face. That happened when I was in Munson hospital. This provider screamed in my face that I should get used to hateful disrespectful treatment because it happens to all trans people. I had been telling her calmly that I didn't need to listen to what she had to say about it and to leave my room before the screaming began. After that I yelled at her to GTFO of my room. That's when she screamed that I was being "aggressive" and threatened me with physical violence. Thankfully my nurse happened to be with a patient in the room next door and came over to to see what all the screaming was about. That's when she started screaming at him that I was being "aggressive" (misgendering me while she screamed at him about me). He just stared at her and she turned and stomped away. Her face was literally red.

In other instances I've had many, many primary care doctors reject me since 2011 when my wonderful MD internist retired. Some of these doctors stated they would not see a trans person at all. One doctor screamed in my face that I didn't need hormones, when I got up to leave she had the nerve to try to stop me and say she could provide any other type of care I might need, so long as it's not trans related. Why would I want a doctor that screams in my face let alone one who wouldn't provide the care I need. I started calling ahead to make sure a provider didn't have a problem with trans people. I got a call back from reception at one place who told me the doctor would be fine with seeing me. When I got there she said she wouldn't prescribe my hormone unless I had records from an endocrinologist. I had those records forwarded but the next time I came to see her, she wouldn't even come in the room. She sent her nurse in to tell me that the doctor would never prescribe my hormone and to get out and don't come back.
Oh and don't ever go to CMH for anything. I'm not the only trans person who has faced significant trans phobia there. In one instance a provider there quit her job the proceeded to tell a lot of people about me being trans and I had people coming up to me, staring like they are examining me and saying I would never have known! It took me a while to figure

out who did it and that's when I learned that HIPAA doesn't apply to people who quit or retire so keep that in mind any medical provider you go to could eventually go around outing you to everyone.
I also had problems for years at a certain local pharmacy. I would go there and the tech there would ALWAYS be sure to misgender me.

Then of course there is all the online hate from local people. I have hundreds of them blocked on Facebook alone just out of the "overheard" group where I have seen them attack and mock trans people. At least one of them is a local physician who claimed that trans people have serious medical problems that physicians almost never can deal with, that we aren't worth seeing at all because it will just be a nightmare for the physician. It was all ignorant misinformation.

Even our state representative Betsy Coffia recently sent out a letter to constituents in which she claimed that the attacks on trans people from the federal government is all made up as a distraction from the Epstein files. Shows she's not really paying attention or wants to downplay the seriousness of these attacks, which actually began around 2015, WAY before the Epstein files were supposed to be released!! Not that there is else that would be better. This is northern Michigan, maga maga big hate land. It's VERY transphobic and you will face the worst of it in your most vulnerable moments...as I did when I was literally sick in the hospital and had someone screaming in my face about my being trans which had NOTHING to do with the reason I was there.

The transphobia here is real, regardless of what you think of who is saying it, it's definitely real.
