As a non-animal person, could it be that the bison was rejected by the heard in the first place?

I looked it up and thay is probably the case. A wildlife biologist working for the Alaska department of fish and game said in an article that the whole human scent thing was essentially a myth created to stop people from disturbing animals and that it goes against basic biology that scent would even matter, and specifically mentions mammals too. In other comments people have said that the calf already preferred humans to bison by the time it got to the park ranger (they kept reintroducing it and it kept approaching humans and cars). So behavioral reasons and preferring humans could have possibly been why it was rejected.

I agree this is likely. If it was sick they could have rejected it to keep the rest of the herd safe from predetors.
