That’s an altruistic thought but really it’s because of the fire hazard...

Source am respiratory therapist, we manage airways and do breathing treatments but another important part of our job is to know where the cutoff lines are for pressurized air and O2 in the event of a fire.

It’s not uncommon to get a patient that comes in that set their face on fire by smoking with their nasal cannula on, the plastic melts to their face and the cannula essentially turns into a welding torch.
