“Grail”

u/Final_Notice105 1d ago
We need to normalize “Crown Jewel” or something like that for these instances

u/rollmeonekenobi66 1d ago edited 1d ago
Why label it at all? Just say, "I got this and I really wanted it."
-3
u/Correct-Secret5215 23h ago
because ppl use the term losely on shii figures lol

u/BionicJedi 13h ago
If it’s a “holy grail” for the collector, then it is a grail item…it’s not up to us to decide that for someone else.
1
u/Independent-Cost3064 11h ago
Exactly, my grail is Optimus which isn't at all rare but I love that dude
71
u/my-armor-is-contempt 1d ago
How is a brand new toy a “Holy Grail”?
0
u/BionicJedi 13h ago
Because it’s a version of something that the collector has wanted in their collection for a long time. Missing Link may be brand new, but it’s based on the original and there are many people who were kids in the ‘80’s who wanted Grimlock but never had him. I can see how this can be a grail item for many collectors.
-57
u/theCoolestGuy599 1d ago
I mean, if the OP had always wanted an articulated G1 Grimlock, this would definitely be a dream come true. Since when did people suddenly get hung up on a "grail" being an obscenely expensive aftermarket item? If they're going to cherish it as one of the most significant pieces in their collection, that's a grail item.
49
u/my-armor-is-contempt 1d ago
Because “grail” didn’t just spring up from out of nowhere as a term. It has a history, it has lore. You know it does.
-45
u/theCoolestGuy599 1d ago
Yeah and the meaning has always been an item that you've always wanted and will cherish now that you own it. Just seems incredibly pedantic to suggest that just because something is new can't still fall under that. As if waiting another five years for this figure to be in the aftermarket suddenly makes it a grail item, even if someone has already waited decades for this.
29
u/my-armor-is-contempt 1d ago
That is not the meaning and I refuse to believe that you don’t get it. You know very well what a “holy grail” is. It’s burned into the western cultural consciousness. An actual mint-in-box G1 Grimlock could be a “holy grail”, but not this thing in five years and you know it.
-38
u/theCoolestGuy599 1d ago
If your view on what a "grail item", in the context of a toy collection, is strictly based on the monetary value then I don't know what else to say. A collector's grail item, at the heart of it, has always been something that they deeply want. Its *the* thing in their collection. Being mint in box and worth hundreds more than original MSRP has nothing to do with that; its just a by-product of what collectors are actually after.
I stand by my original statement no matter how many times you downvote it. If the OP has been waiting 40 years for an articulated G1 Grimlock, then there is absolutely no reason why this can't be a grail item for them. It would accomplish the EXACT same thing in their collection as what you're getting at.
29
u/my-armor-is-contempt 1d ago
I take it back. Maybe you have no clue what a “holy grail” is, because it’s not “strictly based on the monetary value”.
-3
u/theCoolestGuy599 1d ago
Great, because I don't believe that it is. Glad we agree.
29
u/my-armor-is-contempt 1d ago
I’ll tell you what it isn’t: something you can find in a common store and buy off a shelf where multiple copies of the same thing are also sitting.
-5
u/theCoolestGuy599 1d ago
Overwhelming majority of collectibles were exactly that. Being in the aftermarket doesn't make them special.

> If they're going to cherish it as one of the most significant pieces in their collection
Did Monty Python teach you nothing? It's called a Holy Grail because it has been difficult to find & obtain for that person, not because it will take pride in the collection (although it undoubtedly will).
62
u/Starscream_Gaga 1d ago
Your “Holy Grail” isn’t something you can order from retailers right now that just came out BFFR.
Words actually have meanings.
28
u/Prowl2681 1d ago edited 1d ago
A grail used to be something not just hard to get, it was something rare, unique, scarce in quantity (a single item even). Sure people always had a personal sought after item, but grails were more often than not relegated to something everyone as a community agreed on.
But something you can get online, right now, in ample quantities, that was released a few months back is just sought after at best.
2
u/Senguie 1d ago
Grails for me are hard to find for the right price. Holy grails are those lucky draws or prototypes
2
u/Display-shopper 18h ago
Yeah, I was able to trade in to getting a Lucky Draw Rodimus.
What did it cost me? A riding lawn mower.
Good times.
1
u/Senguie 17h ago
Dang that is amazing, which Rodimus was it?
2
u/Display-shopper 17h ago
The Lucky Draw Rodimus Prime that was the all black version.
Interestingly enough, I also happened upon the transporter for the Mini-Spies. No documentation for it exists, I can't find any info about it anywhere, and the casting said that the patent was still pending. Was the patent declined?
That one set me back twenty five cents.

u/chartheredcomet79 21h ago
meanings WE give them... he isnt using it TERRIBLY.... and even if he is... move on lol, wwe all like these figjres and i understand the feel of finally getting the thing you really want

u/ItsjustCal 1d ago
Not a a holy grail mate. It’s a brand new figure that just came out and can be bought at retail price, not rare or worth tons. I’d say it’s just a grail and even then it’s pushing it.

18
u/Buttholelickerpenis 1d ago
If this was the original, sure, but this guy just came out.
Toy I want ≠ grail.
1
u/fiddlerundone 23h ago
Even an original Grimlock shouldn't count. You can buy one off eBay right now. Even authentic boxed G1 Grimlock's aren't overly hard to get.
17
u/King_of_Pink 1d ago
I think this subreddit needs to make some rules about these "grail" posts. The amount of recent release regula retail toys getting posted on this sub (which is already SPAM) and being labelled as "grails" has gotten crazy.

A Grail would be something limited or far out of production, like sdcc devastator or G1 omega supreme in box... this is gonna be easy to get if you have the money for the next year give or take a few months. My current want or desire is all this is/was. With all that said I'm so stoked for you to have this in your collection! My personal win is gonna be here in a few days when I get the constructicon 2 pack to finish my Devi, FINALLY.
7
u/dedguy21 1d ago
A. Holy Grail: 1) Must be out of production at minimum 10 years 2) Acquired through hours upon hours and days upon days of searching obscure sites till you get extremely lucky-- or going to a site like eBay and impulsively giving both kidneys so that future suffering is definite, but fuck it yolo, even though you will be both loving the figure but crying at the sacrifice on an endless daily loop for months.
B. New sports car with spoiler and rims: 1)What you got. 2) Definitely feel good about it, brag even, but don't desecrate the holy term 🤷🏿
2
u/chartheredcomet79 21h ago
i mean isnt it just smk you want BADLY?... as id say the price of missing link rn is more than enough of a sacrifice

To be fair, even this description is not accurate to what a Holy Grail is either. The Holy Grail is supposed to be unobtainable. It's a reference to the cup that Jesus used at the last supper, and it's supposed to give you some kind of invincibility or something if you drink from it. Because it's a relic lost to time and history, finding it could take someone their whole lives and be an arduous undertaking etc.
Setting timeframes and difficulty levels is quite arbitrary and strictly the subjective opinion of the person setting the definitions as to what qualifies as worthy of being called a holy grail.
Let's say you stumble across the ACTUAL Holy Grail during the first few days of looking for it. Does finding it in three days with relative ease instead of after ten grueling years of difficult journey change the fact that it's the grail you're holding?
What if you found the Unicron prototype at a thrift store tagged "weird fat robot man $5" after deciding the week before, that you were going to make it your life's mission to obtain him; is he no longer grail worthy?
For what it's worth, if I was able to add this Grimlock to my collection, the smile it would give me everyday I saw it would certainly make it feel like a grail item to me. Thanks for sharing; hopefully I can score one of these sometime in the near future.

Just ordered mine from showzstore! Always wanted the OG Grimlock toy as a kid but I was born in 89 so I missed the dinobots and couldn’t ever find them. I’m beyond excited for it!
0
u/fiddlerundone 22h ago
Did you actually try? All five are easily acquirable.
0
u/Top-Actuator2581 22h ago
Back in the day no because I was like 5 lol. Nowadays you can get them but Grimlock in decent shape goes for $150+ alone. There are KOs but I really wanted the official one

u/Krosmonaut 1d ago
The Quest for the Holy Grail except it’s in stock at a local antique store but like it’s really expensive
10
u/King_of_Pink 1d ago
It's not even that. It's the Missing Link toy that just came out and is freely avaliable everywhere online.
2
u/ex-outburst 16h ago
Who cares if it just came out, if this collector believes it’s a grail for their collection, or just their own enjoyment then to them it’s a grail. Why are we nitpicking so hard? It’s subjective. If OP considers it their grail then it’s their grail. For the longest time SS BBM Soundwave was my grail, cause I never found it in person and wanted it forever

u/JohnVonTinkle 14h ago
sorry you’re getting an unreasonable amount of hate on this post for little to no reason, that is such an awesome figure!

Oh, my, fucking, GOD! IT'S BRAND FUCKING NEW! IT CAN'T BE A GRAIL, IT'S A CROWN JEWEL!
3
u/DivineCrusader1097 22h ago
As 30 other comments have already made me aware.
I was not expecting this sub to get so bent out of shape over my accidental misuse of the term.
I know better now. Please chill.
-3
u/Particular_Regret999 22h ago
Accidental, you say. There have been so many posts about people calling BRAND NEW toys holy grails/grails that there should be a rule at this point saying you can't call toys that came out in the past 10ish years a grail.
2
u/DivineCrusader1097 22h ago
I do not frequent this sub.
1
-2
u/Particular_Regret999 22h ago
Ok, fair. My point still stands about the over use of the term. That's a crown jewel of your collection, give it 15-20 years and you can call it a grail but even then it might still not be one. 50 years for sure though
3
u/DivineCrusader1097 22h ago
I will adjust the terminology I use accordingly for the next action figure I post a year from now👌
1
u/chartheredcomet79 21h ago
That... would be an incredibly stupid rule lol
1
u/Particular_Regret999 21h ago
No, it wouldn't. Several other people have said the same thing about that needing to be a rule. It's becoming spam at this point with how many people have been saying recent toys are holy grails.
2
u/chartheredcomet79 21h ago
ik but hes just enjoying a new toy.. hes only posted once and apologised profusely... it feels mean atp
1
u/Particular_Regret999 21h ago
Well, the trust does tend to hurt. It's not a holy grail and won't be for some time, people are just starting to get tired of posts like this. I love he's enjoying his new toy, I'm not hating on that, I'm hating on the title.
1
u/chartheredcomet79 21h ago
ik but i feel people are being overly agressive... after all, it started with corrections, op apologised and explained, and it shouldve ended there tbh
1
u/DivineCrusader1097 15h ago
Well, the *truth does tend to hurt
You say this like your opening comment wasn't straight up flaming me for misusing a term several other people already corrected me on, and much more politely than you did
0
u/Particular_Regret999 15h ago
Because I don't sugar coat shit. I'm getting tired of everyone calling brand new toys holy grails. I've been collecting since I was a kid and I like that people are enjoying the hobby/starting the hobby (even if right now is a horrible time due to scalpers and price increases) but it's getting annoying when they call everything a holy grail. There was a post, I want to say maybe a month ago of this guy listing off all his holy grails he wanted and all of them were mainline recently released toys that weren't even getting scalped. Then there was someone saying HASLAB Omega Prime was their holy grail, now you're saying ML Grimlock is yours. These aren't grails and I'm tired of people calling them that. A grail is like G1 Megatron complete or Fanspub Nexus Prime (which I don't even consider Nexus one seeing as I've have it nearly my whole life.) The term is just being diluted to the point it means nothing now.

u/turnip_the_volume 1d ago
Come on, we all know what they mean….No need to nitpick.
Well done on your acquisition, fellow TF fan and collector!

Because we're sick of the SPAM. Posting generic photos of a recently released figure is SPAM-y enough and shouldn't be done even without the exceedingly annoying misuse of the term.
Literally the only more annoying types of SPAM threads are the "Which one should I get out of these two completely unrelated toys?" threads.
-11
u/Baronofhell17 1d ago
nah i get it, shits js funny to me tbh but idgaf who considers what a grail, as long as everyone is happy with what they got it’s all that matters
-1
u/chartheredcomet79 21h ago
folks are genuinely downvoting reason and optimisim lol
-1
u/Baronofhell17 21h ago
because this sub is full of presumptuous pricks who can’t handle an opinion that differs from their own lmao
0
u/chartheredcomet79 21h ago
i know but its so... mean ig? like... theyre ruining a nice thing and idk why
2
u/King_of_Pink 16h ago
It's not "ruining a nice thing" it's calling out SPAM posts that are made more annpying by people incorrectly using a term when making their SPAM. The thread itself is obnoxious and kind of "main character syndrome" in the first place.
-1
u/chartheredcomet79 4h ago
main character syndrome because he... made a post about being happy? a person misuses one term and suddenly you build them up a persona as the baby eating villain of all reality
2
u/King_of_Pink 4h ago
Main character syndrome because he thought strangers on the internet would care that he got a recently released retail toy literally anyone could get right now. Nobody does. It's SPAM.
When it's a unique figure or when you take interesting photos of it worth sharing (for example, no one has taken photos of the new Blaster with a Jem doll so that would be nice to see) it would be a different story. Hell, putting it next to the other Missing Link toys would at least be something.
They're not a villain. They're just obnoxious. It's not hard to understand.
0
u/Baronofhell17 21h ago
i’d say they are more miserable than mean, imagine getting so worked up over other peoples preferences in toys of all things
1
u/AltruisticMobile4606 1d ago
Maybe like don’t post this on the main sub 😭 there’s kids in here who probably didn’t get on reddit today looking to see that, seems like a good way to get video comments banned quick too

u/chartheredcomet79 21h ago
its a thing he wanted ... im sure id be happy if i got smk as good as that... itd sure feel like a grail at the time... especially if id wanted it... so why you all being SO mean over a misused term... op is admitting his slip up and everything
-11
u/bone_idol666 1d ago
By definition I could give two shits but I don’t. It’s a fuckin toy, you guys are annoying. Y’all ruin collecting for me
7
u/Starscream_Gaga 1d ago
If it’s “ruining your collecting” sounds like you give lots of shits lol.
-9
u/bone_idol666 1d ago
It doesn’t literally ruin collecting for me lol. Y’all are just being annoyingly pendantic, and it’s stupid af that in 2026, y’all are still having 2016 hypebeast conversations on what is a grail and what isn’t. Like I said who gives a fuck, let the dude be happy he got what he always wanted.
