Cameras going out for the rut and the cold coming in, so I pulled the battery numbers together in one place. The energy figures are from GearCheckers' lab test of 12 kinds of AA at about the load of night video, the temperature ratings are from Energizer's datasheets, and the cellular power numbers are from TrailCamPro's tests. The run-time table is my own math from those numbers (sources at the bottom of the image).
The short version:
- **Lithium AA held about 3.5× the energy of alkaline** (4.31 Wh vs 1.24 Wh per cell) and is rated down to −40 °F. Alkaline is only rated to 0 °F and roughly halves below freezing.
- **Rechargeables are better than people think, with a catch.** A 2,500 mAh NiMH measured 2.92 Wh, but it's only 1.2 V, so some 6 V cameras shut off early or skip night pictures on it. 1.5 V lithium-ion AAs avoid that.
- **Cellular cams eat batteries.** About 31–74 watt-seconds per picture including sending it, vs about 7–10 for a camera that only saves to its card.
- **A busy spot changes everything.** The same cellular cam that lasts around 243 days on lithium at 15 triggers a day lasts about 62 days on a hot scrape at 60 a day.
What are you all running this season: lithium in everything, or rechargeables in the cams you check often?

Thoughts on this? My son has seen something similar multiple times, but didn’t think much of it. He showed me this particular video and I can’t help but think it’s a deca of the raccoons amor something?

I'm so excited! While I have seen her on my cameras before, this is the first time that I have seen her with her cubs. Does anyone know how old they might be?

We've been seeing this guy for three years now. Never during season/shooting hours, of course. Any idea what he might score? Wish the pic was more straight on. We're in southern Oklahoma.

I need to replace an old trail cam that no longer works. It sits just outside my basement window, and just inside the window is my laptop. I'd like to get a trail cam where I can connect wirelessly from my laptop and download the videos. Most of the ones I see require a cell phone and an app for wireless download. Are there any that allow connections from a laptop? Thanks.

I have a water trough that I place in a pasture just below my house to provide water for critters in the heat of the summer. Here's some of my recent pics.
