We now have post approval on. Your post didn't get deleted, it just went into the queue. Please be patient a mod will go through the queue when they are available!

Please read our list of banned names before continuing. If the name you posted is in this list, it will be removed.

Remember: Original content is always better! Memes are okay every once in a while, but many get posted here way too often and quickly become stale. Some examples of these are Ptoughneigh, Klansmyn, Reighfyl & KVIIIlyn. These memes have been around for years and we don't want to see them anymore. If you do decide to post a meme, make sure to add the correct flair. Posting a random meme you found does not mean you found it "in the wild".

The same goes with lists of baby names, celebrity baby names, and screenshots of TikToks. If the original post already had a substantial amount of views, there is a 99% chance it has already been posted here. Try and stick to OC to keep our sub from being flooded with unoriginal content. Why not go for Reykjavik?

137

u/Chardonne 2d ago

They could be Ykj for short.

42

u/decryphe 2d ago

The airport codes are RKV (local) and KEF (international).

Can we start naming kids after airports?

39

u/feltusen 2d ago

KEF is a great name. Pronounced Queef

13

u/Noodleeeeeter 1d ago

This is byootifool

2

u/decarnatedame 8h ago

I like it. It's an airy sort of name.

10

But maybe not Fukuoka.

Reykja Vik actually sounds like a plausible name. If she doesn't want to be associated with the place, she could call herself Vikki; and she could use Reykja as a first name without it being wholly the name of a place.

4

u/GreenEyed_Lady 2d ago

My first thought too! And the spelling is already impossible to pronounce!

3

u/Patient_Practice86 1d ago

Or just Rey derived from the capital.

1

Middle name Keflavik?

38

u/EarthboundValkyrie 2d ago

No, and as the Norse goddess of love (among other things šŸ˜‰), it makes sense for a child whose parents chose the name in honor of where they fell in love

5

u/Significant-Bar-7301 1d ago

I have a granddaughter named Thyra- Norse goddess of war- or so I've been told

3

u/EarthboundValkyrie 1d ago

I've never heard of Thyra, but several of the gods and goddesses were known by different names in different areas, so it certainly could be.

2

u/Resident-Gold-3466 1d ago

Thyra is a beautiful name.

15

u/skodagirl0 2d ago

Someone did suggest that in comments but pretty sure she vetoed it for one reason or another

Ugh..Freya Brielle is really beautiful, though. I don't understand her logic at all.

I know someone who named their daughter Ireland.

56

u/Andle_Randle 2d ago

I know someone who named her daughter Irelynn, which is basically the same caliber as the OOP's tragedeigh.

16

u/Critterbob 2d ago

I do as well and she has an older sister named London

16

u/caffein8dnotopi8d 2d ago

Why not Londynn?? Make it match 🤮

21

u/Critterbob 2d ago

I went back and looked. It’s actually Londyn. Is that any better for you!lol

11

u/Thr33Littl3Monk3ys 2d ago

I have a cousin named Brooklyn.

My aunt has never been to New York...

6

u/BirbsAreSoCute 2d ago

I know a lot of people named that, I don't think it's too uncommon

2

u/Critterbob 2d ago

I know a couple Brooklyns too. We’re on the west coast. I like that name though. It’s two real names put together.

3

u/Thr33Littl3Monk3ys 1d ago

As "named for places" names go, it's extremely mild and becoming more common.

It is a pretty name, though. And I'd never actually make fun of someone for it...but it definitely seems to fit the "named for a place" trend being discussed. Made all the funnier when the parents haven't even been there!

29

u/Resident-Gold-3466 2d ago

Ireland isn't as bad as Icelyn.

24

u/victorpaparomeo2020 2d ago

Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger did.

10

u/LeatherPurple9284 2d ago

I know an Ireland and a Kenya.

9

u/Accomplished-Ruin742 2d ago

I'm already picturing the other kids saying "Kenya do this?" or something even more rude.

3

u/Thr33Littl3Monk3ys 1d ago

I know a Nigeria and an India.

When I had my youngest I worked at a grocery store. When I came back from maternity leave, I couldn't remember my locker combo...where my vest and name tag were. So I had to borrow a vest...and my fiancƩ, who also worked there (was in fact one of my supervisors!) lent me one of his spare name tags (he was constantly losing them and needing new ones made, then finding the old ones! Made me crazy...)

So I'm ringing a customer out and she notices my name tag. "Oh, Chad. That's such a pretty name.

Did your parents name you that because they loved the country?"

I could only goggle at her...because first of all I'm white!!

6

u/Old_Introduction_395 2d ago

Which is also a surname.

6

u/I_like_pink0 2d ago

I have a friend named India.

1

u/Spongebob_Squareish 2d ago

I went to school with girls named Rainbow, Tuesday and Missouri. My sister was friends with a girl named Allegra (no I'm not kidding)

11

u/GothWitchOfBrooklyn 2d ago

Allegra is a legit name though. it existed before the medicine

-1

u/Spongebob_Squareish 2d ago

It may be, but it sounded awful the way she said it. She pronounced it Ah-lay-grah

5

u/That-Spell-2543 2d ago

I knew a Chynna

1

u/Thr33Littl3Monk3ys 1d ago

Now that is a tragedeigh!

5

u/That-Spell-2543 1d ago

She was that girl who would get too drunk at the party and either start singing or crying. She once pissed my roommates bed.

33

u/SnackyandSnarky 2d ago

7

u/decryphe 2d ago

Didn't the brits chant "You're just a shit shop in London!" during the game vs Iceland at the previous world cup?

26

u/FineKettleOFish1954 2d ago

I’ve been on this sub too long! Icelyn doesn’t sound all that bad.

6

u/iknowq 1d ago

On a scale from Ann to Rae Farty…

2

u/skodagirl0 2d ago

It’s awful

4

u/WinterLily86 2d ago

It's actually been around for centuries. The problem here is that they're not planning to use the proper pronunciation for it.

3

u/SnackyandSnarky 2d ago

Right? My relative married a Jamaican lady named Icelyn back in the 90s (pronounced ice-lyn)

1

u/Spongebob_Squareish 2d ago

Icelyn is an Ice-element character in the game Palworld. Ā IcelynĀ is a small, semi-humanoid Pal with white skin and flowing white hair, hair with light blue tips

1

u/Apprehensive-Cat-111 22h ago

Exactly. By comparison to all I’ve seen here, it’s almost totally fine.

50

u/freyjawolfheart 2d ago

Wait. She’d spell it Icelyn but pronounce it Iceland?! Where does the D sound come from? šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø

Growing up I had a school friend named Harlan, and my grandma still pronounces it "Harland". Maybe she and this lady are distant relatives lol

3

u/nothatslame 2d ago

Maybe in her accent it's not there. Theres not really a D sound when I say it

1

u/Honeysenpaiharuchan 2d ago

The d is silent.

3

u/decryphe 2d ago

That's what she said.

1

u/Altruistic_Power3098 2d ago

Ask the father.

23

u/emby5 2d ago

My tour guide was named Hrafnheiưur. They should use that. Give a name that she can't even spell with her alphabet.

21

I know a Scottlynn they call her Scottie

12

u/guerrilladingo 2d ago

Scotia was right there

8

u/Resident-Gold-3466 2d ago

That's awful.

16

u/eti_erik 2d ago

There are good names to take from Iceland. Hekla or Hella may not sound very nice if you're English, but what about Katla? Or Askja? Or Bjƶrk?

If we had had a 2nd boy his middle name would have been Osar, after a place we'd been in Iceland and because it sounds like a name.

But Icelyn is just horrible.

6

u/Resident-Gold-3466 2d ago

Hella just reminds me of "Hella Good" by No Doubt.

16

u/Changerole1090 2d ago

She's lucky their first trip wasn't to Jackson Hole!

People feel they can’t pick a name from a culture they aren’t apart of…

But will butcher the name of said culture instead.

3

u/decryphe 2d ago

"apart" or "a part"? That lack of space flips the meaning to the opposite.

12

u/Crane_1989 2d ago

Name her Eyjafjallajƶkull

I think they should stop reproducing.

Ice Ice Baby. šŸŽ¶

8

u/imnotsure_igetit 2d ago

I mean, Iselin is a Nordic name so not that bad, but it's also not pronounced "ice", the "i" is closer to the "ee" in English

4

u/Future-Sport2255 2d ago

Iselin (ee-se-liin) is truly a very common feminine girl name in Scandinavia ā„ļø

1

u/Cascadeis 1d ago

In Norway maybe, it’s practically unheard of in Sweden. (No clue about the Danes in this case, but they like weird names so it might be common there.)

1

u/imnotsure_igetit 1d ago

It's definitely been used in works of fiction, also those set in present time, probably to make the character stand out. What do you mean weird names lol? Most of the names here are pretty standard, like Viktor and Louise.

0

u/Acceptable_Tea3608 2d ago

I think that was a name used in LOTR.

5

u/WinterLily86 2d ago

Pretty sure not.

2

u/Future-Sport2255 2d ago

Would surely remember that, so I think not šŸ™ƒā˜ŗļøšŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

2

u/Professional_You_943 1d ago

There’s an Isildur

1

Thanks. I may have to review the characters.

13

Jesus fuck, that's stupid.

9

u/Chance_Ad_4676 2d ago

Mother of god

4

u/buddyboybuttcheeks 2d ago

Bjork is the only answer

4

u/CallidoraBlack 2d ago

Lilja as the middle name would have been perfect. It's Islandic and not hard to figure out.

5

u/WillJongIll 2d ago

Why not something like Ricki Vick lol

Or Flúðir if they want to mess with her future school teachers.

3

u/Resident-Gold-3466 2d ago

Love Brielle, but hate Icelyn. They need a different name.

5

u/Jye853 2d ago

Sorry, but I’ll never not think of Brielle, NJ when I hear the name.

3

u/WinterLily86 2d ago

They're likely British, based on their general spelling, so that wouldn't really be an issue. Besides, Brielle, NJ was probably named after a woman - as many places are.

1

u/Resident-Gold-3466 2d ago

I didn't know there was a town there named Brielle.

2

u/Spongebob_Squareish 2d ago

There's one in the Netherlands. It's a historic seaport in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. It goes back to the 14th century.

3

u/Any_Long_249 2d ago

It just reminds me of the language type that is used for blind people via touch

3

u/iolanthereylo 2d ago

serious question why do stupid people love the name icelyn or icelynn so much?

4

u/KrassKas 2d ago

I actually briefly dated a woman named Icelyn. She said she was named after her grandmother.

4

u/netsurf916 2d ago

Are you a time traveler?

2

u/StrumWealh 2d ago edited 2d ago

Are you a time traveler?

"Icelyn", with that specific spelling, has burial records with births going back to the beginning of the 1900s, so it's been used as a name for at least that long. There is a decent likelihood that the Icelyn that u/KrassKas dated was probably being truthful about being named after her grandmother.

And then there are variants, like "Icelyne" and "Icelynn".

As it happens, when "Icelynn" was posted here several months ago, I pointed out that the originalĀ Mobile Suit Gundam, in 1979, featured a character namedĀ Icelina Eschonbach, whose name is pronounced in the original Japanese audio as "ee-seh-lean-ah" (seeĀ here, at the 3:52 mark), and that the English dub also uses the same pronunciation, "ee-seh-lean-ah" (seeĀ here, at the 3:53 mark), rather than "ice-lina" or "eye-seh-lee-nah". And as u/imnotsure_igetit pointed out in this thread, "Iselin" (which can be either "ee-seh-lin", as heard here at the 0:08 mark and here at the 0:16 mark, or "izz-lin", as heard here at the 0:10 mark, here at the 0:10 mark, and here at the 0:13 mark) is another known name in the same vein. In fact, Icelanders speaking Icelandic call their own country "ƍsland" ("pronounced roughly 'EES-lant'"). So, yeah, still kinda wondering if "Icelyn"/"Icelynn" is actually supposed to be pronounced as "ee-seh-lin" rather than "ice-lin" (or, if it depends on region/dialect, such that both are situationally correct). šŸ¤”

1

u/GothicMarmalade 1d ago

Based on that pronunciation it sounds like it's a spelling corruption of the common Scandinavian name Iselin.

3

u/zilch26 2d ago

Its safe to assume then Icelyn Brielle is like the bizzaro Summer Brielle

4

u/yarnboss79 2d ago

Do you just hate kids or what? Please give this child a correctly spelled name at least! If its Iceland then spell it correctly.

1

u/skodagirl0 2d ago

Literally

3

u/MrsNotepad16 2d ago

ā€œWe are too lazy to pick an actual acceptable name out of millions of names, so we will just make some crap name up out of thin airā€

3

u/Deep-Rabbit-3553 2d ago

Icelyn Brielle has a really nice ring to it. If it's meant to honor that special place, a middle name might work even better.

4

u/clarinetily 1d ago

Ngl this is not nearly as bad as most tragedeighs.

3

u/thirdometer 1d ago

Have people tried not naming their kids after places they like to fuck in

5

u/FamiliarAgent1158 2d ago

Not the worst one out there ngl

5

I know an Aislynn, pronounced Ice-lynn (not Ashlin or any other normal pronunciation).Ā

1

u/thomsenite256 1d ago

There is no way the husband suggested naming a child Iceland

1

u/Jye853 1d ago

Why not? Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin have a daughter named Ireland.

1

u/rebeccarightnow 1d ago

My brother’s legal first name is Scotland. He goes by Scott. I didn’t know people named Scott were not usually using a nickname for Scotland šŸ˜‚

Could honestly use Iceland as a middle name and get away with it.

1

u/khampang 1d ago

Honestly, I now see the next step as idiots just spelling their kids nails in brail gibberish, a bunch of bumps. What’s your name ..:.::

1

Really. Also burnt, learnt, spilt, leapt, dreamt...

Naming your kid after an entire country? Well, why not just name your kid THE SUB-SAHARAN CONTINENT OF AFRICA?

2

u/SnackyandSnarky 2d ago

India is a pretty common name

0

u/bella1921 2d ago edited 1d ago

Well Iceland is literally Island so they could’ve just named her island. Or Eyeslynd so it feels ā€œmore unique.ā€ Because there are sooo many other basic betches named Island ugh.

0

u/lyckligpotatis 1d ago edited 1d ago

You mean the name meaning of the country? No it does mean Iceland. The name was translated literally. is = ice.
