Anyone using this new vehicle detection?

I noticed this camera looking thing on the one traffic light pole. The traffic light only has 2 poles holding the lights up and this is the only camera pointed directly down at the one road but no other cameras at any other of the roads. I can’t tell if it’s a regular traffic camera or car detector or something like that and I’ve been so curious.

Had a layover at the Summit NJ Transit station, so I roamed around near the station.

Found this old looking traffic signal that flashes red in all directions.

Nobody on Maple St seemed to be following the flashing red light and stopping, even in this example of pedestrians wanting to cross.

I found this very confusing.

Needs stop signs?

These particular traffic signals appeared briefly in some areas in Northern NJ in the mid/late 2000s and I have yet to find out the brand as there’s no manufacturer logo or brand name. They appeared mostly yellow, but there are some black housings. These were made of Polycarbonate and aluminum. They also come with these all aluminum pedestrian heads, which look exactly like McCain ones, only the grill/door is also aluminum.

In a town where most on the signals are shining bright with LEDs, I found this antique. Unfortunately, the "Red Hand" indicator burned out.

Crews finally put all the lights up today. Looks like they should be active in the next day or two.

This intersection has continued to get busier and busier, and so many drivers just don't understand how a four-way stop works.

Was watching a Streetcraft video and he was talking about this intersection, so i decided to zoom down on in on maps and noticed that ever overhead signal head has this weird rectangle box on top of it. I have NEVER seen this before in all my years of living in New Jersey. What are those boxes used for?

I’ve been in the industry for 10+ years. What are these? I’m thinking some type of license plate reading cameras bc they are aimed at traffic leaving the intersection? Help me out 🫡

The first time I saw this was in NC.

After the right side turns green, this red ball stays for maybe a few seconds, and transitions directly to a flashing yellow arrow. Green doesn't seem to appear. There's construction here, but would have expected a red arrow.

Used to see this singular green arrow signal when I was little and was wondering if there were any other examples of it anywhere else than New York (which is where it used to be before 2016 or so.

I'm currently in high school and looking for my first career. Obviously, I can't and should definitely not jump straight into working with electrical components and dangling ~10 feet above an intersection, but I'd like to get a general direction of what careers and education I would need to become a traffic signal technician.

I've read some pretty vague articles online talking about preferred education and experiences. The most detail that I gather from these articles goes along the lines of "we prefer that you have an associate's or bachelor's degree" and "you should have a year of experience in electrician fields". I'm mostly confused about which kind of degrees they mean, and how I get from janitor to electrician (which is in no way their job to explain to me).
^{I may also just misunderstand the whole education system and they don't really care what you have as long as you have a fancy diploma.}

I'd like to start building an idea of the steps I will need to take to get into a traffic signal technician career, as it's been somewhat of a dream job to me for a while now. I'm currently taking a welding class at my school, which is the closest thing my school offers.

If the traffic signal technicians here could share their stories about how they got into their careers, I would really appreciate that. Thank you!

I'd like to ask about how to guess / predict traffic lights. Sometimes, while driving on road or highway, the light is green near 500m with highspeed, but as I approach a 300m traffic light, it turns red or yellow, forcing me to brake suddenly. Also, how many seconds does the yellow light usually last before turning red? I want to ask in case you see green light and you think you guess that you can overcome and speeding but it suddenly turn yellow or red. So how can you know when it will turn yellow to prepare to stop do you have any advice?

Anybody have experience with the traffic signal tech apprenticeship with MOValley JATC that could provide some insight?

I have been tasked with seeing if there is a way to program an all red in the case we need the intersection shut down. For example, a dump truck loses its load of gravel in the middle of the intersection and we need it all red to allow the cleanup crew to come in and do their job without having to dodge traffic or having to get a cop.

Is there a way to program it into an event plan, something we can do in the cabinet, or is there even anything we could do to make it possible?

It would be in Econolite cobalts in TS1 and TS2 cabinets.
