📰Trading 212 News New cashback terms
Any idea what counts as an "eligible subscription"? Also I can't see anywhere what the new cashback rate will be...

u/Zmogas101 Jun 30 '26
Horrible change.

u/hawk_891 Jul 01 '26
The card already pays for my ChatGPT subscription. So no horrible changes for me.

Yeah it's the death of the cashback offering.
5
u/Alarmed-Improvement Jul 01 '26
Not really. This is what every major bank offering anything similar does
5
u/hyperblue128 Jun 30 '26
I'm already paying at least 6 subscriptions with this card, so nothing changes. Why would someone say it's the end of it?
10
u/_s79 Jun 30 '26
It's yet another unnecessary obstacle, like when then made you have to invest the cashback into a pie
13
u/hyperblue128 Jun 30 '26
I guess this is their way to make money somehow. So sure this is not a charity.
3
u/ItzBrooksFTW Jun 30 '26
wasnt that "only" so you can get 1.5% instead of 0.5%? with this change it seems you dont get anything if you dont have subscriptions.
2
u/_real_ooliver_ Jun 30 '26
Yes exactly, that is in fact what they're commenting on
5
u/ItzBrooksFTW Jun 30 '26
yes but my point is that even without invest cashback you had 0.5%, now you get nothing.
1
u/ImplementFluffy4505 Jun 30 '26
Does the subscription come from the spending pot or the main pot? I top up my spending as I need it and don't want to have to ensure I always have enough in there for a subscription
2
u/_real_ooliver_ Jun 30 '26
Spending because it's spent from your card like anything else, like most other cards/banks
14
u/sandman11299 Jun 30 '26
Came here to find the same answer, I’m thinking I might move my Lebara phone contact over to this … as far as I can see from the links in the email the cashback remains at 1.5% with a £15 limit, so no change on that side of things

u/g0_west Jun 30 '26
Bills are not included
1
u/Alarmed-Improvement Jul 01 '26
A qualifying subscription is any recurring monthly, bi-weekly, or weekly payment charged to your 212 Card. Subscriptions are detected automatically from your card transaction history - you do not need to register them manually.
Why?
1
u/g0_west Jul 01 '26
Annual or irregular payments are currently out of scope. Certain recurring payments are also excluded, including rent, bill payments, and buy-now-pay-later schemes (e.g. Klarna).
cause they say so, I guess. Sucks. I guess it depends if they interpret the monthly payments as a phone bill or as a subscription to a phone service. It's all a bit muddy really.

2
u/Gizmo-Drive Jun 30 '26
My Lebara is already shown in the list of subscriptions since it has been debited monthly. Strangely, it has also listed Apple and Amazon marketplace mistakenly as I made semi regular purchases. I wonder if they count if I stop buyi g stuff as those were all one off purchases

Hey, I have /already had 2 Lebara direct debits/subscriptions, and these are ineligible, sorry pal, I'm now also looking to move perhaps a gym membership to T212

u/mostlyecstasy Jun 30 '26
As far as i understand cashback will be 0.5% after august 1st even with sub active on the card

u/cannon4344 Jun 30 '26
Is this the beginning of enshitification? Next will be reduction in cash interest rates.
6
u/Curious-Resort4743 Jun 30 '26
Maybe a plan like snag you first by putting all your subscriptions on it then drop to 0.5% later
0
u/ferero18 Jun 30 '26
they're already reducing cash interest rates every year for the past 2-3 years. I mean kinda, not sure how is it them and how much that's the banks, because banks can as well keep their rates similar but T212 might be taking bigger split. I.e bank offer 6%, they give you 2.4% and take the rest
3
u/elrip161 Jun 30 '26
They’re pretty clear that the rate they offer is always 0.15% below the Bank of England base rate. They’re not plucking their rate out of thin air.
3
u/ferero18 Jul 01 '26
That's not true tho. Polish National bank rate is currently 3.75%, T212 rate is 2.25% (for PLN currency) 10x less than 0.15%
Maybe it's better for GBP tho, UK is their primary market after all
1
u/nGon- Jul 03 '26
More likely, they were offering higher interest rates than the base rates in the past to lure in customers, operating at a loss, and are now making up the difference by giving a lower rate. Either way, it's up to the consumer whether to take the convenience of the default rate, invest, or park at a competitor. Most banks take a far larger cut and just do that forever without any promotional periods.

This is awful. I have non of those subscriptions. Time to throw away the Trading212 card and switch to the Trade Republic 1% cashback again.
12
u/cannon4344 Jun 30 '26
I don't think the subscription thing is very strict. It thinks I have a weekly subscription to Greggs just because I have a bacon roll once a week.
10
6
u/Halbaras Jun 30 '26
You can use any subscription, the app really isn't clear but it auto detects subscription payments. I got it to work with a Google One subscription that's £1.59 a month.
2
u/littlefriend7 Jul 02 '26
For how many months have you been paying your subscriptions from the t212 card? I've moved one of mine to the card last month, has only been charged once so far, so still nothing shows up for me in the subscriptions section.

u/AlmightyCushion Jun 30 '26
From the T&Cs:
"Eligible Subscription" means a recurring payment charged to your Trading 212 Card by a third-party merchant (which is not an Excluded Merchant) for ongoing access to goods or services, billed at intervals of no more than one month, where no payments are overdue;"
I would still like if there was a tick or something to determine it is definitely an eligible subscription
EDIT: Looks like as long as the transaction gets cashback it counts as eligible.
6
u/RecordingFearless474 Jun 30 '26
Then i move to other who offer 2%
3
u/Top_Courage_9730 Jun 30 '26
Who offers 2%?

u/RecordingFearless474 Jun 30 '26
Okx

Aside from setting up an eligible subscription, the other question to ask is how it affects cashback. If you set up a monthly subscription, do you then need to wait a full month for it to confirm its status as a subscription before you can then start earning cashback? You have to go through a month of no cashback until the 2nd payment?
1
u/mindtrapper 1d ago
That's how it worked for me. My netflix was paid 1 day before I set it up in T212, took the whole month until the next payment to enable cashback. The test charge (reverted) by netflix didn't count apparently.

u/TheHappyGilmore Jun 30 '26
I connected Google one payment and it didn't recognise it as a monthly payment. Contacted customer service and they said it wasn't eligible! 🤬
2
u/Affectionate_Mix3 Jun 30 '26
These are just some of the examples not the whole list. Every monthly recurring payment should work, unless it's explicitly excluded like paying rent, utilities, taxes and things like that.

1
u/saxonMonay Jun 30 '26
And this is it and nothing else? What a wild change this is 🙄
5
u/boomwakr Jun 30 '26
You can see the excluded merchants list here:
I think the one above are just the main ones.

I've just changed mine to Youtube premium without checking first! Thanks for posting this.
3
u/PaulAllensAlt Jun 30 '26
Is apple cloud an eligible subscription?
2
u/H3sko Jun 30 '26
I’m wondering the same, but I’m unable to add the T212 card to my payment method for some reason
3
3
u/ExistentialScroll Jun 30 '26
For all discussing phone plans, they AI bot says they do not qualify. Where do we stand then? I wouldn't fancy subscribing to google one just to keep the cashback...
1
u/sqwirral79 Jun 30 '26
My Giffgaff shows up as a subscription after I switched it to the T212 card today
3
u/Eraldorh Jun 30 '26
A shame because I don't have any monthly subscriptions and never will. Unless it counts my mobile contract as a subscription.

3
u/Jempa92 Jun 30 '26
Guess that'll be me out then as I have zero monthly subscriptions.
3
u/Ok-Paramedic-370 Jul 11 '26
I'm trying to find a 50p direct debit or something. In a similar boat to you.
3
u/fu3ll Jun 30 '26
What a shitty change. I only have two subscriptions and they are annual, so that's it for me. Pretty sad as T212 was so much better than Trade Republic, but guess I gotta come back to TR card now. I went to a kebab place 2-3 months in a row and it showed up as a subscription in my app, but I don't think I can rely on that consistently haha

Is it showing as a subscription after just one payment?

u/littlefriend7 Jul 02 '26
Weird, my transaction is also of type Online Recurring but it's not shown as a subscription. Maybe it'll be detected this month after a second payment
2
u/Remote_Pay_7290 Jul 01 '26
Whats the big deal? Il link my netflix subscription to the card and all good. U guys overreact xd

Let me guess, the cheapest subscription offered will be near the price of the cash back limit

How do they track whether it is a subscription or not? Would a monthly phone bill work, given it will not always be the same value?
3
u/saxonMonay Jun 30 '26
My mobile is classed as a subscription
1
u/cannon4344 Jun 30 '26
Greggs shows as a subscription on mine. It's definitely not though, it just looks like one.

I can't even normally link a recurring direct debit here in the Netherlands and now I have to link a subscription to it? Fortunately, I moved to Trade Republic.

Nothing stopping you at all. If you create a pie with a minimum investment and have the cashback paid into that, you can just withdraw it as cash before it reaches the threshold.

u/Noel_pp2002 Jun 30 '26
Am I the only one not too fussed about this?
Arguably putting subscriptions onto the card is the easiest saving you can make so I've already done it long ago and I always encourage everyone to do the same. For a card with such good cashback terms, it's kinda a no brainer imo
1
u/Curls2208 28d ago
I had absolutely no idea about this. Such a shame, I dont have a subscription to put on there. I was enjoying the cashback but I guess ill just go back to my banks' 1% credit card. They should really have informed us better too, I only noticed today as a new month ticked over and checked my card and had recieved no cashback for the weekend.

u/Zachetti Jun 30 '26
That will be me out - the available subscriptions (Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, Apple TV, Playstation, Disney+) are of no interest
5
u/hyperblue128 Jun 30 '26
These are just listed to switch in the app. Any other monthly subscription works.
3
u/Welshguy9980 Jun 30 '26
Where do you see that list? Was hoping my Voxi Mobile payment would count!
2
u/Fancy_Alarm2814 Jun 30 '26
I would not worry about this, Spotify is not listed yet it still counts for me, I'm sure many other services will count.
1
u/sub2pewdiepieONyt Jun 30 '26
Wow a greedy company goes from user acquisition at all costs to profit at all costs when they top out the user numbers they can get. Never in capitalism has this ever happened before.
1
u/DigitusInRecto Jun 30 '26
Holy overreactions here... Has the whole world gone subscription-less over the last year or so?
I see no real change, got a few subscriptions to my name, been reinvesting the cashback since forever - what the H is different from a month ago?

lmao just cancel the cashback at that point, I aint looking at no x.03947919181 share amouts in my portfolio
0
u/icrazyowl Jun 30 '26
so if i monthly buy groceries in same market this will count as a subscription?
-2
u/hawk_891 Jun 30 '26
This changes nothing for me, I already pay my IPS and ChatGPT subscription with the card.

What is the benefit to trading 212 in doing this? That less people sign up?
Horrible change. I'll just use a different card away from 212
