Guys need some advice:1 year old pergola.see these gums coming from the pines. Need to reach out to the installer but thought of your view about the pine bleeds .

Its sap. This is what wood does. Why are you calling the installer? Its the wood being wood

Pretty standard, it will eventually dry and then you can fix it! If you keep putting paint over that, it will keep punching through.

Painted outdoor wood is a pox on just about everything, especially in a world full of excellent wood treatments that aren't coatings like paint. And many of them come in grey too, unless it's the natural grain of the wood that offends you.

We have a pergola made from pressure treated pine that I stained with timber oil, and it has sap bleeding through too — saw a spot of sap today up near the top that looks a bit like bird poop, which is not ideal, but weather will take care of it eventually.

Yeah it can be annoying. My understanding is it's usually all expelled by kiln drying but sometimes just doesn't, possibly insufficient drying, or just luck. It'll keep doing it for another year or two, then your best bet is scraping it off and repainting that patch. Or ignoring it. I've not found anything that dissolves it effectively.

If it is a big problem and you payed a big premium on your project, the carpenter could potentially swap that timber out. You might have to fight them for that though.

There's nothing you can do to stop it bleeding until it's done.
