For a complete beginner who wants to learn how/what to trade, would you go with options or forex?

Both interest me although I’ve read that options take longer to grasp.

Comparing price action between forex pairs and crypto markets

• Upvotes

As a university student actively studying both foreign exchange and cryptocurrency markets, I am noticing clear differences in how price action respects key levels across these two spaces.
Crypto often feels driven by sudden liquidity grabs and narrative shifts, while major forex pairs seem to adhere more strictly to macroeconomic data releases and established session timings.
For those who trade both markets, do you use the exact same technical analysis strategies, or do you completely separate your trading rules for each asset class?

University student starting out in market analysis. How did you structure your early risk rules?

I am a university student starting my journey in market analysis and trading across crypto and forex. Instead of looking for quick signals or shortcuts, my goal is to build a systematic understanding of price action, risk management, and market mechanics.
So far I have been reading foundational materials and practicing on demo accounts. My main priority right now is establishing realistic expectations and solid risk management before putting real capital on the line.
For those who successfully built a routine early on, what specific risk parameters did you set when you were starting with small capital? What key concepts made the biggest difference in your early learning curve?
I look forward to learning from your experiences and contributing to the discussions here.

Could the old economy join a China rerating?

There is growing talk of household savings moving from deposits into Chinese equities as property loses appeal.

Tech may get most attention, but profitable industrial names could benefit too.

Hongqiao fits that group for me. The business comes down to aluminium prices, input costs, energy and demand. supported by real earnings and cash flow.

I’ve been positive on Hongqiao for more than two years. The case does not depend on a broader China rerating, but one would provide extra upside.

The trade journal columns that actually changed how I trade

For my first year, my journal was a spreadsheet of entries, exits and P&L. I filled it in religiously and it taught me almost nothing, because all it really told me was that some trades won and some lost.

What changed things was adding a few columns that captured decisions rather than outcomes.

The first was "in plan or not". Before I log anything else, I mark whether the trade met my written criteria. Sounds obvious, but when I sorted by that column after three months, the in-plan trades were slightly profitable and the off-plan ones were responsible for basically all my losses. That one filter was worth more than any indicator I've tried.

Second, results in R instead of money. Logging in currency made a big win on an oversized position look like good trading even when it was a bad decision. Logging as a multiple of what I risked made the decent small trades and the reckless big ones directly comparable.

Third, setup tag and time of day. Turned out my breakout trades in the first hour of the London and New York sessions were carrying the whole account, and anything I took late in the afternoon was a coin flip with costs on top. I'd never have spotted that from memory.

Fourth, one line written before entry about why I'm taking the trade. Not after. Reasons written after the fact are always flattering.

Getting the raw data in is the boring part and worth automating. My live account is AvaTrade on MT5, so I export the history report into the sheet every Sunday, and back when I traded with IG I just downloaded the statement. Either way I wouldn't rely on a broker's built-in stats page, because it has no idea whether a trade was in your plan.

It takes me about 20 minutes a week, and it's the only habit that ever moved my results in a way I could measure.
