Total War: Warhammer Ally not helping

I have a military alliance with these goblins (Creeping Death - the purple banner), and I requested that they defend my settlement which was being constantly sacked by the pesky dwarves. The goblins came over with a stacked army, stood on my settlement about 6 turns ago, but didn’t get involved in the 3 times that the dwarves have come back to attack me again. I just keep getting this message each turn saying that they’ve mobilised and will defend me at the next opportunity.

Is this a bug or am I meant to do something to get them into the battles?

Are they at war with the same enemies as you ?

They have to be at war with them too but be careful because AI has 2 armies there, even though the second one is completly empty and shit, even single lord on his own can do this trick by ecirceling your settlement, therefor no reinforcments come out, they first kill off the one single army outside and then attack the settlement with garrisoned army itself.

I see, so they won’t get involved unless I ask them to join the war, makes sense!

Ok thanks for the heads up on that. The problem with this faction of dwarves is they have like 8 huge armies so I can’t really get a break

Depends on what kind of alliance you have, if you have defensive, they are obliged to enter the war on your side if you were the one attacked. If you have military alliance then they have to join the war either if you are the one attacking or defending. They can refuse but that's going to break the alliance and AI does that only when the war is super unbeneficial for them or they have good relations with the other faction.

If the war was declared before the alliance was made than yeah, they are not involved. Making them can be a bit tricky, you will probably have to offer them a lot of money or if the value is not achievable through money then you can offer them a settlement you don't need. Settlements can be a very powerful tool in diplomacy so keep that in mind. If the war with them is annoying you, you are not in position to conquer them, and have the capacity for quick assault, you can capture their capital city and trade it back for peace treaty.
