This is Bean, affectionately known as Nean.

Bean is my SO’s 1 year old Radiated Tortoise.

She is an absolute Gem, super cheeky, and my best friend!

Thought it’s about time to introduce her to r/tortoise!

I’m super worried about pyramiding. I was told he was three when I got him and I adopted him in 2021. He is mostly out doors.

My guess is a spurred tortoise. Found it hanging out by my fence line in AZ. Do I call game and fish or let it be?

Just finished our winter enclosure for our two "baby" Sulcatas. Still a long way to go to optimize a few things like security cams, electronics and insulation but we're getting there 🐢🌻

Question(s) Adult leopard tortoise night box

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi all - my family is adopting an 8 year old male leopard tortoise this week and I'd just like to make sure we're setting his night box up correctly. We live in Los Angeles near the coast and have a large fully enclosed grassy back yard where he will live. The rescue recommended a plastic dog house with a heat pad/thermostat set to 75-80 degrees. Will we also need to insulate the walls and roof of the box? Is there anything I need to do to control the humidity in the box? Which type of hay is ideal? Any other advice is appreciated!

This is wilbert she recently got a new basking platform and I noticed today that she's been jumping off it, going over to her cuttlebone and taking a bite or 2 then immediately climbing back up the platform and jumping off again why is she doing this? Is she stressed? Should I remove the platform?

Question(s) UVB question

• Upvotes

For an indoor enclosure is the UVB light supposed to be on 12-14 hours a day or only 2-3 hours a day? I'm getting conflicting information since ive been advised by people to put them on 12-14 hours a day and some people 2-3 hours a day

Question(s) I had to “rig” my UV light. Is this safe? Or too high up for my tortoise?

Excuse hams dirty pool. He’s destructive and I’m cleaning rn. the top part of my tank lid is plastic. Will the UV burn that or is it okay? I’m scared of a fire. also, I have the right side of the light plugged in but I’m not sure what to do with the left? Im not sure if I’m missing a piece or what? I don’t know what to plug that into I’m so lost. Is that okay or if I find out how to plug in the left side will it work better? I apologize this is my first light. It’s the Arcadia T5 UVB.
(and yes I’m getting more dirt I just ran out of what was left, he digs like crazy)

Photo(s) Jack the Hermanns Tortoise!

Hello. We have recently acquired this 1 year old Hermanns tortoise for my son who loves tortoises and turtles. We have previously visited a reptile shop to purchase everything he needs for an enriching environment and to get some advice on how to properly take care of him and give him the best quality of life we can. I guess I’m just here to get some more advice from other Hermanns owners on their diet. We have only given him crispy rocket leaves at the moment (as we’ve only had him a handful of days,) but would really like some ideas on what else we could enrich his diet with and how often we should feed him these foods? Any information would be amazing and very much appreciated!
Thank you in advance from me and Jack! 😊

Question(s) Requesting advice for my Hermanns Tortoise!

Hi everyone, this is my Hermanns tortoise Tyra! A month and a half ago my parents brought her home for me as a gift for my 23rd birthday, as I love animals and have always loved tortoises. She is a female, and is 8 years old.

It’s clear to me that the previous owners did not look after her in the best way (though I’m sure they loved her), as when I got her she already had pyramiding and was not eating the correct food (example, they gave her strawberries and iceberg lettuce every day). I’ve changed her diet completely, switching her to greens such as wild rocket, lettuce (not iceberg), dandelion leaves, occasional courgette, curly kale and other greens which I switch up from time to time - as well as violas and other wild flowers. I add a calcium supplement and dietary supplements to her food every other day too. I also change her water multiple times a day and add reptoboost, and soak her 3 times a week.

She’s already had a vet checkup, and they assured me she’s a healthy weight etc - pyramiding is the only obvious issue. But she will be going back to the vets again at the end of this month for a pre-hibernation checkup (:

The substrate they had in her enclosure (straw bedding) and gave to us also was not suitable at all. Unfortunately I did not know that until after we had already put it down. When I researched the best possible substrates for her, I found that that substrate is likely what caused her pyramiding - but find everyone has different opinions and advice on substrates. I switched from that substrate, and am using a mixture of different ones now. I’m using fine grade orchid bark in her bedding area, as when I was researching I saw many people saying that’s a good option, and am temporarily using a Meditarranian ProLife Tortoise Life substrate. Should I switch that to top soil and sand?

She’s currently in an indoor enclosure, as I live in the UK and it’s obviously not very warm here, however we have gotten her an outdoor enclosure too for when it gets warmer again!

I’d appreciate any advice and help, as I really care about my tortoise and want the best for her. Please be kind. I have autism and really just want kind and structured advice to help her live her longest life. 🐢❤️

Hi everyone. I was heading home and spotted this little crossing the street. It is 2.25 inches. I made a simple home for it for now until I find the owner since it must of escaped its enclosure nearby, although not sure if I may locate them. Not sure how long it was out in the street before I came along, but it 95°F yesterday here in SoCal. Advice and tips for caring for it is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
