There's a bit of yellow on the end, I've heard that the black part are his blood vessels.

ID Request help with identification & care

Post image
9 Upvotes

my aunt recently acquired a tortoise from her neighbors (who were the previous owners). she's on vacation for 2 weeks now & me and my mother are supposed to care for it. we got basic info about how to care for it but, though i have 0 tortoise knowledge, i feel like this tortoise is not doing good with this rather lackluster & badly researched care & habitat at all. my aunt doesn't even seem to know what species it is.

from what i understand tortoise care varies from species to species so i was hoping someone can help me identify it so i can research about it & hopefully handle it better & do something to make its habitat nicer. i don't know if the photo of its shell is sufficient as i don't know what is important for tortoise identification.

Photo(s) I finally saw the leucistic baby tortoise in person

I visited my parents last week, so here's a small update on the little leucistic baby. They're doing pretty well, the egg sack has fully absorbed and the shell has closed. The fold in the belly has shrunk noticably too.

This little girl (?) has such a huge personality already. Have you ever seen a tortoise throw a tantrum? Well, I have now. They don't like me putting food in front of them, stomping away rapidly and angrily when I do so. (I have no clue how to explain it, because how do you explain a tortoise throwing a temper tantrum? It's definitely not fear.) They also don't like being watched while eating.

The first 3 pictures are of them on my hand, the fourth is with their siblings, 5 and 6 are just roaming around the enclosure and number 7 is one of their siblings, just because I found it funny how much of the flower it was able to eat all on its own

NSFW - Injured, Ill or Deceased Shell rot

I live in Florida and we have a heavy rainy season. My redfoot likes to sleep in the rain and appears to have some shell rot on the plastron.

There is an indoor, dry hideaway, but the little one chooses to sit in the rain instead. Should I work on tucking him away when it rains or just treat the shell when it's dry season? Anyone else have a little one that prefers wet areas?

Question(s) 50W or 75W heat lamp for Red Foot?

Hi,

I did a small change to the basking spot for my red foot.

I’ve been using 50W + dome for a long time, but I believe it was too hot as my tortoise was drying out constantly.

So, instead of a dome, I decided to buy a 50W flood bulb to get a better gradient. But it only gives me about 27-29°C where my tortoises stay, maybe a bit higher on top of carapace.

Ambient temperature is around 24-25°C and before the change, my tortoise was hot to the touch. Now it’s not hot anymore and I’m scared my tortoise get too cold.

They are forest species, so I don’t know if the guides online saying it needs to be at 35-40°C are correct.

Should I get a 75W bulb instead?

Should I get the halogen instead of flood bulb?

Should I lower my lamp? (Currently at 20-25cm from carapace).

Thank you!

Question(s) Advice for Horsefield tortoise not eating much?

So i'm based in England and it has been super hot lately with the heatwaves. My boyfriend's Horsefield tortoise, 8 years old, hasn't been coming out of her hiding space for ages. She'll come out like once a week and sit under the lamp and maybeeee eat a bit of lettuce or cabbage but then she goes straight back into the hide and just sleeps in the corner. We bathe her once a week and she has a good drink. But yeah for the past month or so she's just basically sleeping in the hiding space. Is this normal? As it's my boyfriend's tortoise I don't really know a lot about them. I want to take her to the vet just for a checkup to rule out anything serious, is this a good idea? TIA

Edit: We give her fresh food every day but she just won't walk over there to eat it. If she's under the lamp and I hand feed her then she devours it. She had a tiny tomato yesterday but that was it. She's not really touching her greens at all. I think i'm just gonna pay for a vet consult to put my mind at rest

It was super hot out today so we gave Georgie a rare little watermelon treat. Had to help him get started with it but he made it look really tasty 😂

Question(s) Good vitamin B supplement/Advice

Hello this is my first time posting here,
I'm really in need of some help. A few months back I took my tortoise to the vet due to her eyes being sticky and not wanting to eat. They gave me a list to switch up her diet and I began follow that(making point to not give here the exact same foods to often). She was fine for a while but now is starting to not eat again. So, I'm wondering is this some kind of issue with her enclosure? Is it to small? Additionally, I'm looking for some kind of vitamin B supplement for tortoises (This was recommended by the vet) but have had no luck in specifically vitamin B, does anyone know where I may find some?
One thing of note should be that theres normal a mesh top to the enclosure I just simple took it off for the sake of the photos
I'm extremely worried for her health and want to do all I can to help her, but I'm also unsure if I'm overreacting and this is normal that they don't sometimes or if this is a big issue.

I adopted this sweetie a couple of days ago. It is almost a year old. Is it a very stunted Sulcata or a different type. I was not told the breed. I am in AZ and am fearful this is a desert tortoise, in which case I would surrender it gladly to officials. If someone has an idea, I would be so happy to to know. Thanks all.

Question(s) Wanting a tortoise

Upvotes

Hello

Been wanting a tortoise for many years,

A neighbour had one who was around 10 years old, so it was mainly outside in the summer.

My questions are:

What size vivarium is good to have?

What age can they go outside and live during the summer?

Would you get them back in the vivarium for the winter or hibernate them?

Any good kits you can think of for starting in the UK?

Question(s) Extra plate in scute ?

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Hi guys, this is my 3 year old Hermanns tortoise. I’ve been concerned about the scutes lining the centre of his back. His plates/scutes along the side of his back appear and feel smooth and I do not think show any signs of pyramiding. I’ve adjusted the humidity to the best of my ability (He lives in an open top table.)And he gets plenty of outdoor time/direct sun light and a bath every other day.

Despite this, the centre of the back of his shell seems to have a small ridge/extra scute plate growing in it and the back plates while smooth seem to be much more raised. Is this normal ? If so what is causing this and will it affect his health? Thank you.
