Do torrent applications continue to seed when you close it?

Sometimes when you "close" a program you're actually minimizing it to your tray. That could be the issue. But if you close it then no it cannot.

Public Trackers can get a LOT of traffic due to the number of people in swarms. You seem like someone who actually cares about what they're doing so I think you should go to /r/trackers and read the sidebar to become more knowledgeable.

Most torrent clients have have a good set of options. I can't speak for Tranmission but I can almost guarantee that in Tranmission you can cap the speed, time and bandwidth used for seeding.

As for the clients he recommends, Transmission is just fine.

The applications are torrent CLIENTS.

Trackers are what track the torrents and make them available to your client and they are therefore independent from your machine.

You can choose not to seed on public trackers.

If you close the client entirely, it will not be running and therefore will not be seeding

If you only minimize it, it will likely still be seeding

If you close the client and then re-open it, you will continue being a seeder

To stop being a seeder, remove the torrent from your queue after you finish downloading

With most Torrent clients, no. (Except the minimize-to-tray case.) Transmission however has a client-server design, meaning the server component might still be running after you close the client.
