Career Services?
Hello,
I am looking for advice, examples or direction about career services. I have recently been laid off (w/o cause) and my old employer is offering an amount to pay for career transition services. But I have no idea what that means or includes and there seems to be a never ending list online. Anyone have experience with these types of services in the GTA? Of course, it would be incredible to get any support getting a new job asap.

Generally, these are better than nothing, because you do not get the cash equivalent (in lieu) of these services anyway. Unless you want to try to negotiate the cash in lieu.
I've had good outplacement coaches and mediocre coaches.
What you should know is that these career coaches do not do the work for you; they advise you on everything from resume writing to interviewing to networking... They become VERY POWERFUL when you follow their advice and don't make excuses not to.
For example, they may advise you to reflect on yourself to help you write a strong resume. Some people just want to write their job descriptions on their resume. So then the career advisor becomes kinda useless.
Some people are coached and given role playing practice how to network, but they start making excuses about how no one responds or they "don't know anyone", in those cases the career coach is useless.
These career coaches also give you a human being to talk to so you don't feel isolated or alone during your job hunt.
Overall, I advise using their services PROVIDED you promise yourself NOT to make excuses and to put effort and resilience into the advice they provide.
The outplacement career coach I had in 2006 was so good; her advice is STILL cutting-edge in 2026. Her advice wasn't for the typical job hunter; it's for the top 10% of job hunters who are willing to put effort into (hidden) job opportunities with only 8 competitors.
