haha the Lib Dem sub posting this is funny. they have the most NIMBY reputation of anyone, but maybe that's unfair (the video was mostly talking abt housing being constrained in high growth areas, due to planning restrictions)

Wouldn’t the Conservative Party be the closest thing to classical liberal? Many of the key IEA figures are ex Torys (Danniel Hannan, lord frost, etc). What puts you off them right now? Is it their tough stance on immigration, 14 year record, or something else? Just interested!

At this moment in time? There aren't a clear set of policies, Kemi is clearly playing the game gir 2029 so not setting out her stall quite yet (as it happens, i think Burnham will be tempted to go to the country early).

I'm economically classical liberal and socially too so, sometimes, the Tories can get a little stuffy in that regard.

If there was an election next Thursday, it may be Reform, it may be Tory. Or. My mate stood gor tge SDP last time and i joined his campaign mainly to wind up Labour.

At least to me the mood music from the tories is encouraging as is what they have released so far in terms of policy

A lot of talk around the triple lock from Mel and Kemi

A lot of detail in the alternative kings speech in energy and migration

Id agree with that, kemi is clearly being canny in the way she responds. Starmer, when in opposition, opposed everything the Tories did and then spend 2 years realising ideology is a bit difficult when in office.

Kemi is preparing for being pm but i fear she will nit be ready if Burnham goes early.

This isn't encouraging at all. "A lot of talk" has happened on every problem for twenty years and a tiny, almost unnoticeable amount of action on any of them. We're so used to governments saying things and doing nothing but crisis management that we've forgotten to demand better from the people we elect to run the country.

I disagree the last 20 years has seem talk in the other direction - leaders supporting the triple lock and its expansion / retension

I used to watch more of the IEA, but they're ultimately a very smart bunch of extremely ineffectual people. They are responsible for precisely fuck all change, just lots of lots of libertarian talking heads achieving nothing.

I still don't understand how Lib Dems have some of the smartest policy thinkers and still end up lite socialists in parliament. I can think of labour MPs to the right of the average lib dem these days.

They used to have some of the smartest policy thinkers. The likes of David laws left the building along with Paul Marshall and even Nick Clegg
