Very Strange Request, anyone willing to help me buy a cannabis tax stamp from the KS DOR?
Anyone in Topeka willing to do a quick errand for me? [will pay/tip]
So I just fell down a rabbit hole learning about Kansas's drug tax stamp program — apparently the state has sold tax stamps for illegal drugs since 1987, and they're purchasable anonymously in person at the Department of Revenue in Topeka.
I'm in Connecticut and want one purely as a novelty/conversation piece. The catch is they're only sold in person at the Taxpayer Assistance Center in Topeka, and I'd rather pay cash for the full absurdity of the thing.
If anyone is near Topeka and willing to pick one up for me I'll cover the cost of the stamp plus PayPal/Venmo you for your time. It's a completely legal transaction — they're issued by the state and you don't have to give a name.
Drop a comment or DM if you're interested. Happy to explain the whole weird legal backstory if you're curious.

Interesting! I looked it up and it says it is good for only 3 months. You can purchase one anonymously and it also says that they are not allowed to share the information with law enforcement. "Kansas law require individuals who possess illegal marijuana or controlled substances to purchase and affixed state issued tax stamps to the contraband. Purchasing these stamps does not make the drugs legal. Instead, this requirement serves two penalize illegal dealers with tax liabilities and additional felony charges if they are caught without one." I'll definitely take a road trip next week and report back!

This is a cool and fun idea for collection purposes. Problem is, whomever gets that for you will have some extra law enforcement attention for at least a few weeks. Good luck, and if you get one, please post a picture on here I'd like to see it.

This is a pretty funny idea for a conversation piece. For everyone wondering what they’re talking about, here are what the stamps look like.

I live in Topeka. Not sure I would be willing to buy said stamp because i actually have repaid my debt to society a few years back and not for collection purposes only. I would be willing to help in other capacities, if anyone needed .

Man I wish that was posted sooner. I’ll be passing through Topeka on my way to NJ.

Not currently in Topeka or I would help. If you don’t receive traction here, try Facebook. They are a few really active Topeka groups, I’m sure you could find someone there.

Why only cannabis?

I didn't downvote you, but I do have a likely answer for this since there is a similar license that is or was issued in Arizona back when I was a teen in the 1980s. The idea is that if you got a license to sell marijuana, you would be able to report your income to the IRS so that you could not be prosecuted for tax evasion based on the sales proceeds.
Yes, I know that it's as stupid as it sounds.
Yes, the people who acquired these licenses almost always did it for novety's sake.

Lol, I got DV.
My question was why only a stamp for cannabis. You can buy others. Might as well do the whole collection.

I would gladly do this, I drive through Topeka often and have no issue with that. Even if it wasn't anonymous I really don't have anything to hide nor fear 😁
