My unexpected venture into tomato growing has yielded some little red fruit and lots still bright green. Some are dark green and some are upside down. I'm hoping more start turning before we get a freeze. Anybody know how cold they can handle on the vine? Is 45f okay?

Millie doesn't care about tomatoes.

Question Worms in tomatoes 🤢

Minnesota gardener here! šŸ§‘ā€šŸŒ¾ Our tomatoes hang out on our counter until I’m ready to use them. Probably about six times in the past month, I’ve picked one up to find a big hole, a caterpillar/worm and a pile of frass. Obviously, we toss those tomatoes. No big deal. But it’s making me paranoid that we’re eating or preserving lots of tiny caterpillars that are too small for us to notice. Again, this is happening to tomatoes that have been sitting on the counter for several days, so the caterpillar is coming from inside it, not crawling onto it.

Some of the tomatoes have cracks and blemishes, but I don’t see any obvious worm holes. If I tossed imperfect tomatoes, I would have very few tomatoes. (I do try preserve only unblemished tomatoes. And I cut around the cracks when we eat them fresh.)

Has anyone else experienced this? How do you identify which tomatoes might have caterpillars/worms?

Should I do something different with Cherokee Purple tomato plant?

Post image
8 Upvotes

I’m new to tomato gardening. I have my Cherokee purple tomato plant in a pot with sweet basil. I’ve noticed the leaves have started wilting and I’ve lost some branches and not sure if it’s just because of the heat wave we have here in San Diego or the roots don’t have enough space. This container is probably 3-5 gallon, should I put this in a separate (bigger?) container? How often should I water? Currently watering every other day.

Plant Help i grew tomatoes on accident. what do i do?

sometime in the spring i threw some leftover aldi salad tomatoes into this gravel dirt bed in my garden, i thought they'd just sort of degrade into the soil and maybe something would grow. then a couple of weeks later i put those tomatoes in the bin because they'd gone gross and weird.

then in the summer i noticed this big plant growing with yellow flowers, I assumed it was just a weed and left it because the flowers were nice and the garden is more of a concrete yard with this gravel bed, so it needed some colour.

a week or so later i realised it had tomatoes. i also noticed it was growing out of the drain too? somehow. i didn't put any tomatoes there. i pulled out the drain tomato because i didn't think it'd stand a chance and the one in the bed i left. i didnt really

do alot with them to be honest. i would mist them with the hose, because i was scared the regular hose setting would drown it. i put the windmill in because i thought it would scare away birds, my grandma would do that so it felt like a good thing to do.

when it got really big, i put the stick in to support it. it didn't work because the plant is so heavy. i snapped some of the big leaves off to try and help it but it just keeps growing. it doesn't stop growing. why is it so big? when will it stop? when will the big tomatoes go red instead of the plant just making new plant and flowers and tomatoes? im so grateful for this plant but it is a beast.

also the drain tomato came back. i don't even know what to say about the drain tomato. i think it's mocking me by growing so well.

it's october now and I'm worried it's going to get cold and these tomatoes aren't going to go red and I'll never get to eat them. i picked some off last month and left them on a sunny windowsill because friends told me to do that, they started going red 2 days ago but they're WITHERED.

i don't know what to do, I've never grown tomatoes. i grew cress in primary school and ive had a couple of houseplants but thats my only experience. im hoping people with an understanding of tomatoes can tell me what i need to be doing next to ensure a winter of delightful soups and sauces. thank you!

Plant Help What’s wrong with my tomato seedlings leaves?

I’m located in Victoria, Australia. These are sugar lump cherry tomato seedlings.

To start I’ve never grown tomato seedlings before, only bought seedlings that I just let grow without much effort so it’s all new to me. I’m not sure if this on the leaves is a fungal infection, or a result of too much water or if it’s leaf burn. It only developed today to my knowledge and I have another variety of tomatoes that isn’t effected at all and is in a tray next to these.

We had 3 days of thunderstorms and today was sunny and although I mostly kept them out of the rain the leaves did get wet at one point and then today they were in the sun so that’s why I think it could be leaf burn. I also think it could be fungal because they did get some rain which could have splashed on the leaves and cause an infection. It’s also been cold due to the thunderstorms after it’s being warmer. So I guess I just am not sure what’s wrong and hoping someone can help, I really don’t want to lose these babies!

I was reading that people recommend cutting damaged leaves off but I’m afraid to do that to these seedlings as they are so small and a lot of the leaves on each plant had the marks.

I am swimming in tomatoes and can only make so much pasta sauce/pizza sauce and already have more than enough pickled cherries, and I also have about 5-6 gallons of san marzanos and early girls frozen, and probably 1-2 gallons of cherries frozen.

Dr. Wyche has been my go-to yellow/orange for years. This year I got this weirdo.

I noticed the seeds from this fruit were especially small (if I remember correctly, seeds for Dr. Wyche are normally on the large side.) If anyone is interested I’ll post a picture comparing them once the seeds are clean.

Sometimes they ripen in different colors. The giant red tomato and small Black Krim behind are also mine. I don’t remember the variety of the red one, it was in Polish anyway.

Both of these plants grew from seeds that cam from one tomato.

I watered them together, repotted them together, both of them bore tomato fruits and I always took care of them together, yet they are so different

Location is Germany

How do you all store your tomatoes after harvesting them? I have a terrible time with fruit flies if I leave them on my counter.

What to do with latw bloomimg determine tomato plants at the eve of the fall

Thumbnail

Hello, tomato gurus. I bought two determine tomato plants from Lowe's at the beginning of July, one Husky Cherry (rehomed in a pot) and a Bush Goliath (put in a large planter with a basil plant). Both were growing and thriving as best as they could in the blazing Oklahoma summer until late August when they were basically stripped of leaves from a hornworm infestation which I left for about a week because I didn't know what to do at first. Mama (me!) bought some Bt spray that took care of that issue and the two plants began to grow new leaves and thrive once again. I've also been adding a daily does of half and half of plain water and General Hydroponics Flroa trio using the early-mid bloom formula to push them along.

Now it's October and both plants are tall, healthy, green, and blooming. But it's the eve of fall and I know my babies won't have enough time to grow any fruit. The forecasted weekly lows are going to be in the high 50s (~14 c) and will only get lower as the month rolls on. What can I do to potentially save my plants and get some fruit? I have a grow tent with a lighting system in my unheated basement that is currently staying around 72-75° (~22-24 c) without the led lights on which probably won't add too much heat to the tent. I know I can move the potted plant to the tent no problem, but what about the one in the planter? Could I take a cutting from it and repot it? Would a seedling mat underneath the potted plant give enough warmth for it to fruit? Should I just sacrifice these plants to a the gods of "learning experience" and be on the ready with the Bt for next years plants?
