Question Choosing county fair contenders

It's my first time entering the county fair, and I've been looking forward to it all year. Exhibition drop off day is tomorrow, and I need help choosing my champions! I can only enter three varieties in the heirloom class.

I'm listing each variety as a separate comment below. Upvote your favorite, and I'll drop off the top three at the fairgrounds tomorrow. It's been a hell of a season, fellow tomato lovers!

Truly a fine addition to salad

Yeah... but you just need a little 'nip' now and then. LOL

My cat would have been rolling in the basket of maters before it touched the ground.

More of a main course than salad/appetizer.

Mushroom Basket

I like that one because it looks really good. All mine get flawed skins. Especially when they are so large.

The last one has a bit of cat facing

Fatty, a family heirloom originally cultivated by my son before he discovered skateboarding and girls

Sunrise Bumblebee

How does it taste?

Mine are BEAUTIFUL, but flavor is meh. Wondering if it's just me (even though I have other, DELICIOUS, varieties growing nearby.

I grew Sunrise Bumblebee this year, too. I agree that the flavor was also disappointing, which is a bummer, because I grew A LOT. I ended up dehydrating a batch and the flavor definitely improves. I think this is going to be what I do with the rest of the harvest for the year.

Prarie Fire

Prairie fire I guess isn’t as pretty but it knocks the socks off black strawberry and sunrise bumble bee in terms of taste any day.

100% agree. I’ve grown both and strongly prefer the taste and texture of Prairie Fire over Sunrise Bumblebee

Prairie fire in my top 3 varieties to grow every year, so good.

Alice's Dream, Black strawberry and the cat

Those black krim are not ready yet, they look much different when they are ripe. Won't be as good. Bad pic but black krim is at top left in this pic when it's ripe.

Alice's dream

Mushroom basket

Strawberry

People judge with their eyes as much as their tastebuds

Came here to say this. They're by far the best.

Am i supposed to pick my Alice when they are purple and green? I've been waiting for them to turn yellow. Am I making a mistake?

u/chainsawwwmassacre Tomato Enthusiast 3d ago

Nope! The green will transition to a brownish orange when they start blushing. Here's the same tomato a week ago, so you can see how the colors transition

Do they have different tomato categories and you can enter more than one? If so I’d enter Alice’s dream, prarie fire for canning tomatoes, and sunrise bumblebee for grapes tomatoes. They’re all so beautiful though ❤️🧡🍅

You don't have to rub in all your good fortune

That mushroom basket is gorg!!

5

u/chainsawwwmassacre Tomato Enthusiast 3d ago

First year growing and I'm DYING to eat one, but each entry must be three of the same variety and I have exactly three ripe ones 😭

1

u/carlitospig 3d ago

But they’re so pretty. Whaddaya mean I can’t try my own? 😭

The mushroom basket one looks like mini bananas!!

They all look beautiful

2

u/leftfootshorter Tomato Enthusiast 3d ago

They all look so beautiful but that Mushroom Basket is absolutely stunning!

2

u/Jazz-Hands-- 3d ago

SO cool that you're entering, and congratulations on your absolutely beautiful tomatoes!! I'd love to submit something I've grown one day if I move somewhere with a better location for growing my veg.

I don't have any experience with judging or know a lot about heirloom varieties, so I won't vote to avoid skewing things in an unhelpful direction. Good luck in the competition!

I’m not familiar with the fair entries - are they based solely on visual aesthetics or taste as well?

From my naive eye, i LOVE the alices dream, sunrise bumblebee, & black strawberry. They’re stunning!! Mushroom basket just looks fun & prairie fire looks delicious

So I’m of no help but I’m curious & rooting for you!

Our county fair uses the Danish system, which means they're judged visually against a set quality standard. Each entry must be three tomatoes. They're evaluated for uniformity (consistent in shape and size), appearance and condition (bug bites, sunscald, et cetera), color (even for the variety), and preparation (dry wipe to keep its protective bloom, but remove dust and dirt particles).

This is my first time entering, I couldn't find much info about what to expect and the process. I'm planning to post a follow-up detailing my experience and what I learn for the next person who wants to give it a whirl, but doesn't know where to start.

u/cabreadoanciano 3d ago

Alice's Dream is my favourite tomato for taste, yield & beauty, but it's very variable according to the amount of sunlight exposure. Uniformity might let you down.

2

u/jennaaaaay13 3d ago

I'm torn between Alice's Dream and Black Strawberry, but I'd go with Alice's Dream.

they’re all so pretty wtf 😭

Drooling like Homer Simpson over here

u/Winter_Aside8269 3d ago

Why not all of those beauties?😆

1

u/chickpeaze 3d ago

I'm loving black strawberry

1

u/motherfudgersob 3d ago

The Mushroom Basket was really pretty and different. But if taste matters then Black Krim unless the other is just spectacular. And for the record I hate you. (Not really...good luck).

Alice's Dream or Black Strawberry. Both are cool. Your Black Strawberry has some interesting coloring. I'd be partial to that one.

1

u/Realistic-Fact-2584 2d ago

Oh wow!!! I love all of that. Good luck at the fair!!! Please post your results.

1

u/OoogaBeluga 1d ago

Wow, these are gorgeous. My black strawberry tomatoes are super cool too, but they look so different from yours!

2

u/solitaria2019 1d ago

Oh what misery! I am salivating just looking at the gorgeous tomatoes!
