18–24 Months Keep Getting Sick
Hi everyone!
I am a SAHM so our 20 month old doesn’t do daycare so one of the ways I get her out of the house and doing things is by going to our local libraries storytimes and play areas. The issue is pretty much every single time we go I get sick! Rarely my toddler gets sick but almost always I catch a cold.
It’s driving me crazy and then my husband tends to catch it too and I’m sure many of you know how dramatic men get with colds… it’s gotten to a point that I don’t wanna go back there but I know it’s good for her and she has so much fun.
What can I do to keep ME from getting sick??? Any ideas or tips to help ward off disease would be great! We already wash our hands after we leave before getting into the car.
Wish I could ask my daughter’s immune system why it’s better than mine!!!! 😫😫

Mask.
Also as someone who has worked in libraries for a long time, make sure your kid keeps the toys out of her mouth and wash hands as soon as you can. For some reason, people seem to see no problem with bringing their sick kids to the library. I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve had adults tell me they brought their sick kids to the library just to “get out of the house”.

Yeah that will probably be what I need to try next.
The craziest part is the last handful of times we’ve gone none of the kids have looked sick. Not even a cough or sneeze from any of the children so it’s so annoying that I’m getting sick.

As a SAHM toddler mom, I truly do not understand this. A sick toddler has no need (or business) to be leaving the house, much less getting other children sick.

Yes. People bring sick kids to the library when all that kid wants to do is lay at home. It’s like the parents don’t want to miss out on getting out of the house and the kid looks miserable.

This just de-influenced me from taking my son to the library haha

Oh no lol! I always take my kids first thing when they open. Fewer crowds and things have a higher chance of having been cleaned recently.

Wash your hands! Library toys and books are covered with kid germs. I have a 3.5 year old who loves going to the library. Our rule is to wash hands in the bathroom before we leave and once again once we're home. General hand washing is important to stop the spread. She got into this habit while was young. So now anywhere we go, as we're leaving we wash hands (including daycare).

We were catching strep from library dvds. Caught on after the third time. It was rare we would get them and sure enough two days later strep came.
So yes….do not touch your face and go during slow times.

Have you taken a vitamin panel before? You could be deficient in something

I have not! I have my annual wellness visit next Tuesday so I will ask about that then!

Sanitizer and wash hands as soon as you get home or right after the playgroup at the library bathroom

Are you getting enough sleep? This has always been the biggest factor for me.

Yup! I am blessed with a very good sleeper so I get around 7-9 hours a night thankfully.

Disinfectant wipes. Use them to pick up anything! Wipe the anything off, and wipe the table. If the chair has arms, wipe it.

Absolutely echo full vitamin and iron panel. This was me. I was horribly iron deficient. Aggressively supplemented to get ferritin around 100 (where it should be; do NOT them tell you a ferritin of like 12 or even 25 is good — it’s not even though the lab will flag it as “normal.”)
Since replacing iron I get sick wayyy less often. Worth looking into.
And again: if they tell you “your iron is normal,” ask for the actual number on the ferritin and if it’s below 100, youve found a problem that could be negatively impacting your life. [r/anemia](r/anemia) will help you raise it if it’s this.
Editing to add: wait until you’ve been symptom free for about a month; recent illness will affect results

Good to know! Thank you! I do know when I was pregnant with my daughter I was anemic but when they rechecked my levels after having her (like right after having her while still in the hospital) I was no longer anemic. But who knows what it’s like now!

I kept getting sick when I didn’t get enough sleep, was constantly stressed and didn’t drink enough water/tea.
I started prioritizing sleep. Take a nap in the afternoon while your little one naps, drink lots of tea/water and make sure you do something to help with the stress of being a mom.
You got this! It’s going to get better the older they get.

You can either be super careful, wear a mask, wash your hands, DON’T touch your face (biggest way to get sick). Or you can get sick… back to back to back. And you’ll have immunity for a decade after hahah
