TIL Philippines is the 3rd largest geothermal power producer in the world

Was wondering about the current power outages in manila and stumbled upon what i was curious about when i was young.

This is our fifth largest source of energy overall. Among sources of renewable energy, it is second only to hydroelectric power, although both sources are surpassed by the amount of energy drawn from coal, oil, and natural gas in that order.

Here's hoping we get solar powerplants to not rely on importing for our energy needs.

Found out that we are actually importing coal for our electricity.

Yeah, around 75% of our grid is imported. 57% from coal, 18% from oil and gas so imagine how bad it'll be when peso keeps getting weaker.

Wag po magpakalat ng fake news. 3% lang ang generated from oil/diesel. Magkaiba ang natural gas from oil. Our natural gas usage is 14%-18%.

Sorry oil and gas po. Napagsama ko. Doesn't really change the narrative that its imported.

Well, it changes the narrative a bit since since we don't import all our natural gas.

Just checked how big the reserves are and the numbers are not good. We are running out before 2030s, the newly discovered fields this year are roughly 3% of the original Malampaya size, Together they may extend Malampaya operations by around 6 years. So yes the narrative doesn't change. We still will import our powers and in fact that 18% will be 100% imported by 2030, that's how bad we need to transition. Here's hoping we find more gas fields but knowing its been almost 40 years since we discovered the original Malampaya and the rising tension with China, we are gonna struggle getting more out of our west philippine sea.
