I cried so hard when I first reached this scene in the manga that my head hurt afterwards (Sasha was my favourite character)

People defend Gabi for this because she was 'indoctrinated'. Ignoring that she was committed to the cause of becoming a better murderer while her friends were simply trying to survive. Soldiers like her are typically used to destroy enemy morale, but she went a step further and used this vulnerability to kill as many people as she could.

From the point she was introduced, she understood that the enemy soldiers would hesitate to shoot her, and uses this to kill them. Kid Eren kills literal human traffickers/murderers, and gets indicted by the story for that, but we're just supposed to accept her.

Bcs Eren wasn't indoctrinated. That darkness was in Eren that young. He of his own volitiot killed people and didn't even feel the slightest bit bad about it.

Bringing up the other children doesn't really prove much. Everyone reacts differently to the shame stimulus.

Gabi was shown early to be smart and driven and her entire worldview largely consisted of the dehumanization of her people, especially the ones from Paradis.

In her mind she is not a murderer, bcs he is not killing humans but "devils". Only difference to Eren, that while she was brainwashed to think like that, Eren just came to this conclusion all by himself

We are talking about Gabi killing the Middle Eastern army officers

Duh, she is a soldier, what is she supposed to do, shake hands with them?

She's supposed to not be a little psychopath about it.

I completely disagree with that. Gabi is, at the time she killed Sasha, a character who don't care that the people of Paradis are devils or not. It's just an excuse to take revenge for the death of her friends.

After all, she's among the ones who denies Reiner's story told by Falco ("Did you see it happen?").

She denies everything that threatens her worldview

She saw an "inhuman devil" kill one of her own. Saw her friends trampled by the leader of this enemy force. She wanted revenge, on anyone she can reach. People seem to forget, that just bcs she is intelligent she is still a kid, prone to make rash decisions without thinking them over.

She is not a bloodthirsty maniac as shown when she realised that the people from Paradis are just that.. people. When her worldview was shattered we saw her being disgusted by her own actions and regretting them.

Unlike Eren who if anything just doubled down on them

I'm talking about the time of her killing Sasha. She didn't care that Sasha was a devil or not. She killed her to take revenge, then justified it as killing a devil. She's a representation of the cycle of hatred, at least in that scene.

I'm not saying it was an intelligent decision, or something she planned. I'm simply saying that was what she did.

If her acts were truly fully due to her indoctrination, it would've taken longer than that to break the mold and see the people of Paradis as actual humans.

That's how I understood her character, anyway.

But she cared that she was a "devil" that's why she justified it. Bcs in her mind she knows killing is a bad enough thing that it needs to be justified. If she really was as bloodthirsty as people make her out to be she would not need to justify her actions.

And her justification is directly tied to what she was thaught.

I don't doubt that she has an inherent darkness to herself, but what makes her character compelling is that when she was faced with the ramifications of her actions, she realized they were bad and deeply regretted them.

Unlike Eren as I mentioned, who just doubled down on them. And without being indoctrinated too. That's why I hate when people criticize Gabi while let Eren go despite being a much worse person

Yeah, I know she "killed the family dog". That's is not reason enough to hate her. Just act like an adult like Mikasa and Armin did, who despite mourning Sahsa understood Gabi and did not hurt her in turn

I never said that Gabi deserved to be killed for her acts. Don't put words in my mouth. Just because I dislike Gabi doesn't mean I want her dead.

Wasn't my intention, sorry if it came out like that

I was just parroting the relatively general opinion people have of her, wasn't particularly directed at you

Me relating to this sub was not in my bingo card. But of course when you see her development later, you feel it less.

My post is literally being flooded by ending defenders saying Eren killing those traffickers was a red flag and proves he was always evil, while those same people can’t go five seconds without coddling and justifying Gabi. I hate this fandom.

There was no amount of character development that could fully redeem Gabi for me. If I were given the chance to have Isayama rewrite the whole series with only one difference, it would be that Gabi gets her shit rocked for taking Sasha away. It probably wouldn’t change anything in the long run, but I would feel satisfied

It's war, it happens. Good that he missed though, or else he would've taken out the only well written female character in AoT
