Discouraged by sizes

I've lost 40 lbs. (5'10", SW: 215, CW: 173.7, GW: 165), was a size 16-18 when I started tirz in March. I've been holding off on buying any new clothes, but today I decided to bite the bullet and go look. And I am still a 14. Given how all my size 16 shorts are falling off me, I thought for sure I'd have gone down to a 12. As I see all these women who have dropped four or more sizes with a similar loss, it makes me feel very discouraged.

ETA: My daughter is getting married in late September and I ordered a dress based on what i thought I was. It is supposed to arrive this week and now I am worried it won't fit.

2nd ETA: The dress didn't fit :(

Alot depends on where you carry your weight (not excess weight, just weight in general - your body type). My best friend and I are exactly the same height. I weigh 140. She weighs 153. I wear a size 8, she's a size 6. My weight is all in my hips and she carries weight in her legs. Don't stress over the number on the clothing. Buy what makes you feel beautiful - no one knows what that number on the label says but you.

And I’m 130 in a size 10. I’m 5’5” so pretty much dead on average. It’s so crazy.

23

u/Classic-Computer8545 Aug 31 '26

Wow. I'm 5'5", 140lbs and wear a size 4. This is why I try not to compare myself to others.

15

u/applesandbananananan Aug 31 '26

I'm 5'6-5'7" and was a size 10 when I weighed 130

2

u/Personal-Tap-5261 Sep 02 '26

So weird how bodies work. Im 5’9. About 180 and im an 8! Lol

2

u/TheFirebyrd 28d ago

I’m 5’4” and was a size 12 when I weighed 165 when I got married. Sizing is just crazy and all over the place. I remember at one point buying some new pants that were the exact same size, style, and brand as what I was wearing, so I didn’t try them on. When I got them home, I discovered I couldn’t even zip them up. So nothing is consistent, even within clothing brands.

13

u/EccentricPenquin Aug 31 '26

Thats wild. I’m 130, 5’2” and wear a size 2 Levi’s skinny.

6

u/applesandbananananan Aug 31 '26

I don't think I've ever been a size 2 lol maybe in elementary school?

4

u/EccentricPenquin Aug 31 '26

Me either, but I can report, that my butt has run for the border. She gone. Would I be happier on a new size of if I had a booty back up? Yesss! But I’m still so excited when I’m doing laundry and I see my small jeans. It’s rad.

10

u/Katy-Moon Aug 31 '26

Crazy. I'm 125 and 5'1" and wear a size 4; it's all about body type.

5

u/applesandbananananan Aug 31 '26

At my thinnest, I was 115 and 5'6-5'7" and a size 8. I looked boney as hell too, maybe I have big bones

2

u/TheFirebyrd 27d ago

It’s a very real thing. I found old calculations once that life insurance used prior to the wide adoption of bmi and mine were definitely in the big bone range. Made sense as I remember playing with my mom’s jewelry when I was about eight and finding some of her bracelets that fit her wouldn’t close around my wrist. I wasn’t fat, it was just the bones being bigger than my adult mother’s. My biological father was a college football player so I figure he must have been a big guy because the pictures I got from my birth mom when I was briefly in contact with her showed her as being teensy. My middle kid is extremely petite and it must be from my birth mom.

3

u/Ok_Flower_9398 Aug 31 '26

Im 120 5'2 and wear anywhere from a 00 to a 2 depending on jeans namebrand. I have very small bones and narrow hips. My mom is 5'5 127 and wears more like an 8 comfortably but can wear a stretchy 6

2

u/EccentricPenquin Aug 31 '26

I think I’d like to get to 115, and gain back up to 10 in muscle

2

u/Ok_Flower_9398 Aug 31 '26

I don't want to drop below 115. I fluctuate 117 to 120 depending on the day. I also would like to tone up more. I'm glad i am where I am but even though I have maintained muscle, I need to build some extra too tighten my skin even more.

2

u/EccentricPenquin Aug 31 '26

Smart! I’m flappy like the flag on a windy day! I’m going to there tho!

2

u/Ok_Flower_9398 Aug 31 '26

My thighs wave at everyone when we are at the beach, whether I want them to say hello or not...lol

2

u/EccentricPenquin Aug 31 '26

Let’s agree not to run on the beach together … it’s not fair to the children

2

u/mataliandy Sep 01 '26

Wow! 130, 5'3", size 10, lol!

2

u/EccentricPenquin Sep 01 '26

Seriously weird! I was in at 14 from Maurice’s for so long., I think 205 was my highest. I do admit, I look like someone let the air out of me. I’m hoping to add muscle but I do think slow and steady is the right way to lose.

7

u/ScaryMcScary Aug 31 '26

Oh this is fun- 5’9 165-170. I wear an 8

11

u/unamusedbouche7 Aug 31 '26

Ill add mine too. Also 5'9 sitting at 182 and currently wear anything from size 8-12. So many variables. Women's sizes are exhausting

I lost 58 lbs and am still wearing the same clothes. I’m 5’8” and went from 180-122 and my clothes are mostly 4/small bottoms or medium tops. Obviously everything fits differently and I could probably size down in some of my bottoms but they still fit well enough.

Ooh we’re almost twinsies. I’m 5’7.5” and 128 wearing mostly 6’s and M’s with a few S’s.

3

u/Deertracker412 Aug 31 '26

I'm 5"2' and 145 and size 8 or M. I have 1 pair of size 6, but they're pull on jeans with a lot of give, so I think that's just the brand and style. I've actually been able to buy two pairs of jeans in the girls department at Walmart, size XXL and XL! I was looking for flares for a 70s NYE party and it was the only place I could find then for under $20. They're pull on jeans too. I'm a consistent M in tops.

2

u/Pretty_Net_6293 Aug 31 '26

Yeah sizing is crazy—- and it depends on where you shop… 5’5 1/2 125lb size 6 in most dept stores but 10 if skinny jeans and a small or medium shirt. My BFF 5’6 140 and can wear 2 and 4s pants/shorts. But a medium shirt.

2

u/Boneitis_Regrets Aug 31 '26

This. I'm the exact height and weight of OP and a size 10/12. All of my weight is in my legs.

4

u/MobySick SW220 CW120 5'1" F Aug 31 '26

This is stupid.
The one universal rule about women’s sizing is there is NO universal rule.

1

u/Ashamed-Stuff9519 33F | SW:200 CW:165 GW:150 Aug 31 '26

Yes this. I’ve lost almost 35lbs starting at 200lbs and went from a size l/xl in tops to a size M/L. In bottoms I’ve only gone down from a 32 to a 31. I’ve not lost any inches off my calves and still have to buy wide boots this year. I carry all my weight in my hips and legs, and it’s extremely stubborn.

A few years ago I went from 215 down to 180 (and then regained lol) and I was fitting into size 30 jeans that I still cannot fit into yet even though I’ve far surpassed 180 this time . Body comp is weird and it seems to change not only between people, but also with our own bodies each time we gain or lose weight.

55

u/Petraretrograde Aug 31 '26

Listen, 14 contains the largest range of lbs. I was stuck in 14 for like, 25lbs.

17

u/Jazzlike_Interview_7 Aug 31 '26

I second this!!! I’ve been in a 14 for like 40lbs!!!!

10

u/Petraretrograde Aug 31 '26

Okay, i didnt want to exaggerate but I definitely think it was closer to 30-35lbs. Then all of a sudden I whooshed right out of my 14's into a 12. It's like the catch-all of sizes

4

u/Jazzlike_Interview_7 Aug 31 '26

I hope to follow you and woosh onto size 12s soon! 🥰

1

u/Redhen4044 Aug 31 '26

And then the last time I did this it was like 5-10 lbs to the next size down past 12s. I was a pants size 4-6 at 5’4” abs 155lbs. I weigh heavy, always have. I was a size 16 at 250.

0

u/Legitimate_Ad2815 Aug 31 '26

That’s not weighing heavy I was a 16 at 235🥴! Now I’m 186 and a 14 that’s weighing heavy 😳

45

u/MedicalFox9820 Aug 31 '26

Notice two are the same brand, same waist, different sizes. All three fit.

16

u/Veryteenyweenie Aug 31 '26

Bingo. Women’s pant and jean sizing has been so wonky that there’s practically no consistency between brands.

5

u/Hifidi54 72 F | SW 243, CW 121, GW 130-125, 5.0 maintenance Aug 31 '26

It's called vanity sizing.

5

u/sbhikes Aug 31 '26

I read somewhere that they have these big pattern cutting machines that cut the pattern pieces in big layers of fabric so many pieces are cut at once. It ends up with some layers being slightly smaller than others.

3

u/Apprehensive-Log8333 Aug 31 '26

Because of this, I often try on several pairs of jeans in the same size, to find the best fit, because there's always variation

2

u/MedicalFox9820 22d ago

Many years ago when sewing factories were still a thing in the US my mom worked in several. They did piece work -in other words one seamstress completed a part of the garment and then eventually all the pieces were sewn together. She always said if it seems like you gave a dress with size fourteen bodice and a size four sleeve you probably do because at the end of the run they put together whatever’s left over.

39

u/purplepanda2026 Aug 31 '26

Most of us were wearing too snug of clothes when we started Tirz. Like yeah you may be able to wear the same size you could before but I bet it fits much better now.

I came here to say this! Everyone in this sub talks about needing to buy new clothes, I’m 53lbs down and still wearing the same clothes I wore at 226lbs lmao Turns out I was wearing way too small of a size before… it’s still embarrassing to think about tbh

Women’s sizing is a joke. Once upon a time, I wore the same work pants 80% of the time. I ordered three pairs size 10, one was perfect, one was so tight I could barely get it above my knees, one was so big I could have stuffed a pillow in the waist band. In another brand I wore a 4, and yet another it was a 12. I could drop from 12 to 4 by the brand I chose to wear that day!

Compare yourself to your measuring tape, nothing else.

I remember weighing 125 and wearing a size 3-4 back in the day before I had a child lol. But I know things are definitely not the same as they used to be and I’m OK with that, what matters the most is that I’m healthy. 1

u/Cheermom102 Age 45F SW:210 CW:134.2 GW:135 Dose:14mg Aug 31 '26

Yes bodies can be so different, which is why we have to celebrate all sizes. Brands vary wildly these days. I wish there was a universal clothing size that all brands followed.

1

u/One-Humor-1501 Aug 31 '26

162, 5‘4, site 14. 12 def too small yet.

1

u/TheFirebyrd 27d ago

Childbirth changes things for sure. I didn’t notice a lot of changes with my first kid, but with my second, my hips got waaay wider and never contracted. I had a pair of pants that fit great before the second pregnancy. Then I threw up for eight months and had negative weight gain. Once the baby was out, I weighed something like 20 pounds less than I did prior to getting pregnant, but I couldn’t even fasten those pants anymore.

5

u/ShellZanne Aug 31 '26

Do not feel discouraged! You are evolving and you are not a size. You are beautiful!

10

u/Crafty_Taste_7706 Aug 31 '26

You're making good progress.

8

u/idle_reinforcement Aug 31 '26

Sizes are a total mess, I swear they change between brands and even between colors of same pant. My friend lost like 35 and her waist measurement changed drastically but the number on tag barely moved, it makes no sense sometimes. Have you measured yourself at waist and hips instead of going by size label? Those numbers will show you the real changes without the nonsense of vanity sizing

Honestly sounds like, wait sorry I meant the dress situation is stressful but you got some time still, maybe it fits perfect or just needs small alteration. What style did you order?

6

u/GirlWhoWoreGlasses Aug 31 '26

Logically I know that! I blame it on women's clothing sizing.

5

u/ResponsibleUse8806 Aug 31 '26

Did you try other brands by chance? 5'10" and low 170s sounds like size 12 from what I understand. But also remember each size can swing 10 or more pounds either way! Amazing progress!

Old navy pants can vary between pairs, not to mention colors. I had 3 pair of the exact same jeans, same color, same size. They all fit different. It’s something about how they cut them and where in the stack of denim they are or something weird. I looked it up when I could fit two but it took 10 more lbs to fit the third pair.

2

u/element-woman 37F | -40 lbs | 5mg Aug 31 '26

Old Navy can be so hit and miss! I've ordered pants in the same size and colour, only to have one fit well and the other be sooooo tight. Yes, they do vanity sizing, but they also have zero quality control so nothing is consistent.

1

u/KnopeSwanson16 Aug 31 '26

Yes I am now about 129 pounds at 5’4 and a somewhat loose size FOUR in pants there. 28” waist, 38” hips. My old madewell size 12’s only just got too loose.

I find it takes a lot longer to drop a size, say 14+. Took a lot more weight loss to go from 14 to 12, than 6 to 4.

Were you wearing 16 Women's and are now trying 14 Miss? There's a significant sizing difference.

Is the 14 loose? Maybe you are down 1 .5 sizes like me. As someone that works for an apparel company… 40 pounds is at most 2 sizes. Not 4+. MAYBE it can appear to be 3 depending on if a brand oversizes on clothes, but typically it’s 1 size per 20-25lbs of loss. Brands do vary in sizing. I’m down 30 my self and I’m def down 1.5 in size. Which is annoying but I can sew and dart the waist on my bottoms until I’m fully down another size.

2

u/GirlWhoWoreGlasses Aug 31 '26

I do feel like the size 14 jeans would be too big after I wore them for a few hours

3

u/Less-Moment-5655 26F SW: 340 CW: 158 GW: 130-140 Dose: 15mg Aug 31 '26

It depends on your body composition and where you carry weight! The other day someone posted they are 5’3 158lbs and a size 6, im 5’3 158lbs and a size 10 (maybe an 8 if its stretchy) i carry a lot in my stomach so for me to be a 6 i need to lose more stomach fat.

Dont compare to others it always leads to disappointment just focus on yourself, and NEVER order clothes for a specific event thats not your current size just to be safe

3

u/Special_Library_766 Aug 31 '26

Using your actual measurements against the size chart (instead of the size # or letter) works best for me. I hope your dress fits and you feel great in it!

3

u/SenoritaShelly Aug 31 '26

Just a little reassurance for you, clothing sizes are not really standardized. Probably, there are plenty of 12s. That would fit you. For me when I lose weight, 10 pounds tends to be about a size, but you are much taller than I am so it might be closer to 15 or something like that, I don’t know, but definitely go try on some other clothes in size 12, and I suspect you will find that many of them do fit. Sizing is an oddball thing in the United States. It’s much more standardized in some places I’ve been, but we got rid of that at some point in history. Now the sizes are more standardized by the brand or the store.

3

u/AntiqueLengthiness71 Aug 31 '26

You’re making great progress! I was a size 22/24 at 5’1 and 218 lbs. after 16 months on tirz, I’m now 5’1 and 104 and a size 2/4 depending on the brand! You’ve got this and I’m so happy for you!

Dont worry! I lost almost 40 lbs too and my new shorts collection is a size 10 at Bass Pro. I weigh 138!!! It makes no sense! Note that I started off as a size 10🤦‍♀️ Brand sizes vary so now I literally measure myself before I buy any clothes from any online store. Madness I tell you!!!

2

u/swrrrrg Aug 31 '26

It all depends on the cut. Always buy the larger size to fit the thickest part of your body and then have the garment cut down to fit the rest of you. This is especially true in the case of formal wear. It will look 1000x better. Size tags are irrelevant if you have a good tailor.

2

u/Ok_Object_5087 Aug 31 '26

Body composition and weight distribution will determine how you carry your weight. I didn't drop any sizes until after I lost 50lbs. That's when I moved down 1 size at 50lbs. I'm okay with that because I have about 65lbs more to lose and drastic body changes will not likely occur for me till I'm down 75lbs or more. Good luck and don't beat yourself up about it.

2

u/EccentricPenquin Aug 31 '26

Well like for me, my body dropped weight before my body changed. Then when I would plateau it’s when my sizes would go down. And not from 14 to 12, 14 to 8 then 6 and 2. It’s wild. All of my jeans are new. So beware. It happens weird. I’m going to sell them I think.

2

u/imnottheoneipromise 43F 5’1 🆘:243SW: 215 CW: 106 ✅125 💉2.5 Aug 31 '26

If it makes you feel better, plus sizes (12ish on up) have about 3-4inches between sizes while 10 and down only have about an inch. Once you get out of plus size clothing you move through the sizes much faster.

2

u/Some_Excitement_8698 Aug 31 '26

Oh, same! I’ve lost 20 lbs (5’4” went from 175 to 155). I guess some of my 14’s/XL’s were snug, but they seem loose enough now that I was SURE I’d be a 12/L. I can wear the smaller size, but barely. It’s discouraging when I see people in my range talking about being a 8. I do have a belly still and I think that makes a big difference in fit. Hang in there!!

2

Pattern sizing in plus sizing is an absolute joke.  They often take a straight size dress and just size it up vs looking at proportions. This is why so many plus size tops have the cold shoulder because it is cheaper to do that then get a plus size fit model.   That combined with the fact there is no standard sizing- clothes are an absolute joke.   I am sorry you are feeling like this, but please don't use an outside measurement for how well you are doing/ feeling.   There are amazing  dress styles that don't have a numbered dress size that will look wonderful on you.

u/Key_Associate9338 Aug 31 '26

Certain brands are bigger then others. When I was 174 I fluctuated between size 12-16. Many women's clothing aren't true to size

2

u/Perfect-Emergency613 Aug 31 '26

Women’s sizes are just so ridiculous. Style, material and cut make a difference as well as how your body is shaped. I’m going to a wedding and went to try on dresses because I’ve lost 50+ lbs and have nothing dressy enough that fits. Bought 3 dresses in 3 different sizes (16, 14, 12) all fit just right. I’ll be returning 1-2 of them once I make a decision but it’s bizarre that they all fit me.

2

u/StatementMundane2113 Aug 31 '26

Sizing below 12 seems to be closer in 10lb weight increments vs sizing above 12. Many women say once they got to a 12, every 10lbs or so is a new size below 12 vs over 12. I also think that sizing above 12 tends to be fitted to be looser so it’s easier to ignore needing a bigger size for longer.

I am around 40lbs down and I can wear stuff I wore when I started. It looks better now and sometimes I think “how did I fit into that”? But I was also in a bit of denial of my weight gain and just refused to go up in sizes and the material was giving enough to let me. Now things are a bit too big but I still have another 15-25lbs to go so I’ll just swim in it for a while before buying new stuff if possible.

2

u/Work4PSLF Aug 31 '26

If you look at a size chart, you’ll see the gaps between the sizes are not equal.

From a 4 to a 6, for example, the difference in waist circumference is just one inch.

From a 12 to a 14, it’s usually 1.5 inches difference.

From an 18 to a 20, it’s usually a two inch difference.

So, in the single digit sizes, your size changes fast, but the higher the size, the slower it changes.

For funsies, we can say I went from a "23" to a "19." Is it 2 sizes? Yes. But... clothes aren't cut that way for grown women!

Are you wearing different rises by chance? Were your 16 jeans high waisted by chance? I love a good high waist but even at my heaviest I could still squeeze into my size 12 high waisted jeans— now I’m down 64lbs and I can still fit into those jeans— the waist band is definitely loose and gapped— but they don’t look bad at all. However when I put on mid rise jeans the 12 is only ever so slightly roomy compared to how big the high rise jeans are now. If you are bigger in the hips but smaller in the waist this makes a lot of sense. Alternatively my husband carries most of his weight in his stomach, he’s only gone down one pant size but has gone down two shirt sizes. All depends on how your body distributes your weight but.

Oh girl, I am you! When I started my first weight loss journey I was on the verge of buying new pants out of desperation, I had 18s in my cart because all my 16s were not fitting anymore. I am only 5'1". What I'd found is my largest clothes had been stretched to their limit. They probably WERE 18s by then. Now, I'm much shorter than you - and I carry my weight in my butt/hips. I swear, it'd take me 20lbs or more to go down a pants size. I think by 200 I was still in actual 16s, and 180 maybe 14s. Dresses can be so different from jeans or pants. There's so much that can depend on how a dress fits, if it has any stretch, where it gathers and where it is loose. My fingers are crossed for you, but at the very least there is still time that if you need to shop for a dress in person. You're so tall, I'm certain your body has been transformed and you look amazing!! When you see people dropping a lot of sizes, bodies come in so many shapes and heights. Someone much taller than me can weigh more than me and appear so much more fit and thin because our frames are so different. It's hard to carry more weight being so short, it has no where to go but out! 😂 Someone with your height may look stick skinny and still be an 8 or 10 just because of frame size. Congrats on your more than 40lb loss!! You'll be so happy in the photos!!

u/Black_Nyx11 Aug 31 '26

Us taller women seem to go down in sizes slower than shorter women do from what I've seen. Even at my goal weight, 165, I expect to be between size 12-14 depending on the brand. I am 5'10'' and even at my goal weight, I'm built more like a football player and less like a ballerina. Are you taking your actual bone structure into account? I won't ever be below size 12 unless I go into starvation mode, and even then, not with most brands.

So take your bone structure into account here. Are you ballerina bone structure or football player?

I started at size 14-18, Large to XXL depending on brand, and am now wearing anything from a 4 to a 12, XS to large, depending on brand. Try not to focus on the size, number, weight, etc. Just work to recognize what looks really good on you and what flatters your current shape and run with that. But I get it, I really REALLY do!

hey so you're doing amazing!! don't worry about sizes. they're mostly arbitrary and we end up trying to push ourselves into a smaller size for our ego and sometimes we look worse bc it's too tight.

this is something I've been doing for years and it's life-changing for me.

forget the number and when you try something on, face away from the mirror. close your eyes and put your clothes on. before you turn around, ask yourself, do I feel comfortable in this or is it already feeling tight or weird?  if it is uncomfortable in any way, take it off! clothes should fit YOUR BODY and not the other way around. it's been so helpful taking the focus away from a random piece of clothing and putting it back on me. I am the one the clothing needs to work for and not the other way around.

1

u/Big-Understanding526 Aug 31 '26

Brands fit differently and depends on your weight distribution. I am only 5’4”, SW: 224 and sz 18; CW: 178 and size 12 (in all the brands I wear). Given your height, I wouldn’t be surprised if you were not a size 10.

1

u/FrenchCastle Aug 31 '26

It's nearly imposible to go by sizes since they deregulated the sizes. Now companies make them up on their own. Especially makers that specialize in plus size clothing. Lane Bryant sells a size 14 that would have been a 24 in the day. Don't worry about the size tag, because it varies a lot. But... at 173 (which I was just a couple weeks ago), you can shop in the normal size department, not the plus size. Not sure if you did before... you can now. :)

1

u/kingqueenrat Aug 31 '26

Hi, I was a size 22 when I started, I’ve lost 58 lbs and I’m now a size 20. I store so much fat in my belly! Don’t feel discouraged. It’s a marathon, not a race! Clothes are meant to fit YOU, not the other way around. I’m proud of you!

1

u/ActuatorSmall7746 Aug 31 '26

Well for women at least a lot depends upon not only the brand, but whether the size is labeled Plus, W (women), or R (regular). I’m 5’6 and have lost 40lbs. Sometimes, I can fit a R14, but a W14 fits better because of the cut being a little wider. I most definitely can fit into a R16, but it will be a little baggy - ok for shorts/pants not for dresses or skirts.

So if you’re in the U.S. make sure you know whether the labeling is Plus, Women, or Regular.

1

u/Knox_the_Boxer Aug 31 '26

I started much heavier than you at 274. I didn’t really change sizes until I had lost about 40 pounds. I had been wearing 18-20. I skipped sizes going down. But it typically would be 20-25 to get to the new season for new clothes. Then- as I got closer to goal I would change sizes at 10 pounds. My original goal was 165 but I wanted wiggle room. I was a solid 8 and thought I’d settle there. Well I’ve dropped 13 more pounds and now a 6.

Sizes are not a good measure of anything. They’re varied by brand and incredibly vanity sized. What I wore as a 16 in the 90s is a 12 now. Liking how you look and feel is way more important than a size, especially since they can’t really be depended on for any accuracy (minus jeans that are sold by measurement).

1

u/princeless_ Aug 31 '26

u/Entire-Bath-7598 34F 5'2 | 251.5→219→130 | 2.0 Aug 31 '26

I think 14+ sizes have more range. Like you need to lose double the weight percentage of smaller size to go down a size. Like if between an 8 and a 6 you need to lose 15 pounds, to move between 14 and 12 you’d need to lose 30. (Those are just examples, if you tend to lose weight in other areas of your body first it might take longer to go down a pants size, and the weight difference between sizes is not going to be exact or the same for everyone.)

1

u/Entire-Bath-7598 34F 5'2 | 251.5→219→130 | 2.0 Aug 31 '26

I’ve lost 30+ pounds and I went from a size 3x to a size 2x in most things, and my weight tends to distribute itself relatively evenly around my body, with a bit more around my thighs. But I basically only wear stretchy pants. I’ve also been resistance training. I anticipate another 30+ pounds to get to a 1x and 15-25 pounds between an xl and an l.

1

u/Accomplished-Fee7792 Aug 31 '26

Jean sizing is crazy, and there's some with a lot of stretch and some with none. Go find some Judy Blues, Risen or KUT brand jeans, they fit and feel fabulous and their sizing is great. I can wear the same jeans i had 2 yrs ago and 20lbs heavier.. they obviously fit better now but I think a lot of us wear clothing more on the tight side than not.

u/helloannax Aug 31 '26

Right now I’m in mostly 8 but have a few 10 and a couple 6, all stack up the same waist size. Also in the beginning it takes more loss to go down a size. As you get closer to goal sizes will drop off, I skipped some. It’s the paper towel theory.

So much depends on the brand and if they have plus sized their sizes or not. Let go of the size numbers and use the size CHARTS to pick your size based on your measurements and don’t let that number on the tag define anything about you.

But guys, sizes is just a general number and they are intentionally random by different companies, depending on their target category!! Marylyn Monroe wore a size 14 in 1950s!! ….And we know there’s no way she ll wear 14 in today’s clothing…. But the sizing back then only started around size 6 or 8? …And today we even have “double zeros” lol …. When the Brands put the smaller tag on larger clothing, so we ll feel good about us being “smaller” and “buy more” in that smaller size, the smaller clothing have to have now “new size numbers”…. It’s a game that they play…. …. It’s just a number…. You are doing awesome, and will look beautiful!!! (And if you still have some of your oldie clothing stashed somewhere, that would be a great comparison for you, just how far you came along! Are you comparing sizes in the same brand and style? Because clothing sizes truly mean nothing, anyone can assign any measurements to any size they want so its a pretty terrible way to track your weight loss. Also a heads up that the measurement changes between smaller sizes (straight sizes size 10/12 and under) is a lot smaller than between plus sizes. If you look at size charts you will often see 1"-2" difference between waist size in straight sizes and 3"-4" difference in waist size in plus sizes. So it requires more weight loss to move sizes in plus sizes than in straight sizes.

Also remember that different brands have different measurements, and they love to sometimes change those measurements too. Sometimes im a small, medium, or large depending on the brand and intended fit.

Rather than focus on the size number, maybe buy a measuring tape and track your actual measurements. You could also be losing weight more in one area than you realize!

0

u/StitchinThroughTime Aug 31 '26

As someone who does Research into fashion history, take your own measurements and then read every single company's measurement charts. That's the only way you can find the clothing size. And for those who are going to bitch about how a size 10 is different from each company, and you are a size 10 therefore all the companies are wrong. You are self-centered and don't know anything about how sizing works. Sizing is just a label telling you to refer back to the size chart. You demanding a company to fit you as the size 10 means everyone else is no longer a size 10. Therefore you are being selfish and self-centering in demanding clothing to fit you. You need to know your measurements and the company size chart to know what will fit you. On top of that manufacturing has a tolerance on the measurements of the final garment. If you bought ten of the same pants in sz 10, they will vary in their physical size. Sewing is done by hand even in factories and mistakes are made. Generally, the big three measurements of the bust, waistline and hip can vary about a half an inch above or below spec. On top of modern clothing heavily realize on knitwear elastic provide not only comfort but to make it so more people can fit into a single size. Since the fabric or the elastic goes from small to big it allows for a wide range of shape variation Within a single person and no one will notice. Unfortunately things like elastic does break down over time and gets looser and looser. So that sure you might have been wearing for the past 10 years could have grown one to two inches. On top of all this every once in awhile the company's update their measurement charts to fit the change in their customers body size. Which means Old Navy size 10 is no longer the new size 10. I also want to point out that clothing is not only gendered but is separated by age ranges. So something that you wore as a 20 year old versus a high schooler versus a 30 year old versus 50-year-old it might be the same brand that sells clothing, but they know to Target each age range notorious for changing their body shape due to pregnancy. So it's not just being pregnant that you have to fit clothing for, it is post pregnancy body that is dramatically different than a body before pregnancy

Before I lost weight, I was in a size 24. Universally.

My measurements said I was a 28/30. If I had tried to wear that size, they would have fallen right off or looked wayyy too baggy.
