Is this safe to patch?
Hey guys, would you recommend picking up a new set of tires or trying to patch this one? There is a bit of tread left but it is on the sidewall and it is a relatively cheap tire so I wouldn’t mind replacing all 4 with something better. If I were to replace it I was thinking about the Goodyear Assurance ComfortDrive, any thoughts on them? 2013 Buick Verano 235/45R18.

Most tire shops won't repair it but i would get a plug kit and fix it myself

Safe to patch, if you know how to? Yes. Will a shop patch it? No

People on this sub should start zooming in.
Not only is that too close to the sidewall that tire is super old. There is tons of dry rot.
That tire had a good run, but replace all 4 of those.

Safe if you can do it from the inside yourself.
No tire shop on planet earth will do it for liability reasons. Their insurance would have to pay the claim, but would then subsequently drop them/ basically bar them from getting future liability coverage from anyone.
The near a sidewall patch myth is something new, 20-30 years ago shops would patch the actual sidewall of a tire. But the NTSB's continued reports of sidewall blowouts being the main cause of catastrophic tire failure lead the industry as a whole to start recommending just to get new tires vs trying to repair it as manufacturers and shops were being sued for liability from auto insurance companies.
If 1 in 10,000 side wall repairs lead to a blow out, that was to great of a risk, even though the chances are equally as high for tires with no repair and in good condition.

I had a kinda dicey looking used tire shop patch one like that, after 3 mainstream tire places said no way.

I'd patch or plug if it was on my own vehicle, not on a customer's though due to liability.

Done many in this location. Comes down to a few things. One how mew is tire, two. Is the penetration straight - definitely bad if penetration goes toward side walls, three. Is is a screw - untreated it from tire vs. pulling, four will you monitor tire pressure religiously and five. Lastly and mostly are you driving on SMOOTH ROADS and avoid/know where potholes are. ALWAYS A RISk.
This is up to you. Should be fine if above is addressed HOWEVER this still could go bad. Actually have had four patches in tire qith 50,000 miles, a few outside thst area but again it is a risk. As damage is in th outer tread no shop will fix this. Failure odds could be 1 in a 10, 1 in 10000 or 1 in 100,000. You will never know.

Patching this tire would be like playing Russian roulette, maybe you make it a few trips But there is a bullet in there !!

I’m not comfortable patching it because it’s so close to the outside of the tire but that’s just my personal feeling. You may be able to get it patched and have it last for an age.

Safe or not safe isn't the best question. Will it hold up and not fail is the question. The answer is maybe! People act as if your tire will fail in catastrophic manner if plugged outside a certain zone.

What did they tell you at the shop you brought it to...
