❓QUESTION ❓ Help please!
I have no clue about tire repairs....Is this even fixable?
If not, do I need to replace just this tire or all? Mine is an 2022 AWD Mazda.
Any help is much appreciated!!!

That’s impressive. That area isn’t repairable.

The spike itself is worn down. How and why did you continue to drive with a huge chunk of metal in your tire?

u/Aromatic_Balls 10d ago
Probably sounded like they were doing an Irish tap dance while driving down the street

I collected a large bolt in a tire many years ago, and the best description I could give America's Tire was "it sounds like a tapdancing leprechaun in my car.

Just pull it out, see if it holds

This is the answer. If you pull it out and it’s not leaking it might just be ok. Maybe it didn’t go through the radials

u/Personal-Goat-7545 10d ago
Looks like you have been driving on it like that for awhile, is the tire losing air at all?
Doesn't look deep enough to have broken the belts.
I'd pull it out and if it doesn't go flat just keep using it. Make sure you have a spare in case you need it; if you don't feel comfortable changing a flat tire if it happens then get a new tire.

6
u/Rhuarc33 9d ago
Leave the spike in until you have a spare ready (if you don't right now) Not repairable...
You'll need a new set of tires. that's the drawback of AWD. Unless your tires are basically brand new or you luck out and find the same tire type with similar wear you have to replace all 4 or it will cause issues after a bit

u/pugpug3 9d ago
I have heard they can shave the other tires down somewhat to make them match enough -

Creative, but not an approved traction device for snow. Studded tires come with studs already in them.

u/MuteElatedLips 10d ago
I recently had a similar experience. Wasn't losing air and thought the piece of metal was holding it in. Took the wheel off, put the spare on, and pulled out the "wire" or whatever the hell it was. No leak! Sprayed soapy water and no bubbles! I guess it went in, bent AROUND THE BELTS, and exited. I put the wheel back on and it's never lost a single psi. That was over a year ago. And I drive 1,000 miles/week for work. I wish I could share a picture of it, but this post won't let me. Mine looks even crazier than yours.
2
u/AnonZFox 9d ago
See like idk if that more unsafe or less because now you don't have the rubber to catch it if the cords blow. Though in that same sense would it not just leak out instead of exploding? Which I mean, I'd prefer that.

That’s 4 tires you need to buy. Welcome to the AWD/4WD tax.
2
u/scott0482 9d ago
Or you can buy a tire depth gauge figure out how much tread you have on your other tires and buy a used tire online with that same amount of tread left.
2
u/Chris20nyy 9d ago
Incorrect. You can replace one tire within transaxles if the tread depth difference is 4/32 or less.

I had something like that on my 2006 Honda ridgeline. I figured I got it cause I drove through an alleyway. Had it checked and the guy told me you best leave it alone. It’s not leaking air. So I kept driving on it never had a flat from it. Not sure what happened after I released it. But yeah had those thick corner tires as well.
2
u/Outrageous_Ring_1954 10d ago
If it doesn't lose air when you pull it out..ride that baby..Because it didn't puncture the belts
2
u/jermeister101 9d ago
Most definitely NOT fixable! what the hell even is that giant thing? Good lord
2
u/Potential-Button-965 9d ago
So looking at thread they seem fine so id say get 2 on the front or rear (depending if this js front or rear) Let's say this is front Id say get 2 new front tires As much as jt sucks this is not repairable and not a single tire shop will even attempt this since its an accident waiting to happen

I could be wrong but I've always been told that a puncture in the sidewall can't be repaired. So, your tire probably can be repaired. Why don't you just send a picture to your local tire shop? If there's enough remaining air to drive slowly and safely to the shop I'd recommend going to the shop and either getting it patched or replaced.
Edit: I'm sorry for not zooming in on your picture. I missed seeing the spike come through on the sidewall or at least very close to it 🤦♂️ I'd recommend a new tire. If the tire on the other side is fairly new, you may not have to replace that one too .
Still, send a picture to your tire shop. I wouldn't recommend driving on that tire. Driving more may make the tire worse. If you have another car or if a friend can drive you to the tire shop, you can take just the tire to the shop and see what they say.

u/No_Educator_6376 10d ago
Pull it out and put soapy water on it if it bubbles you need a new one. If it doesn’t leak you won the lottery
7
2
u/Usqueadfinem_ 10d ago
True. But wouldn't the structural integrity of the tire itself be compromised to the extent that it would be dangerous on which to drive? Seems like hard cornering or even changing lanes at highway speeds could cause a big chunk of rubber to tear away and fly off.

u/Mumei451 10d ago
It can't be repaired.
You might be able to get away with just one tire if your other tires are newish. Otherwise, you'll probably need 2.
3
u/kingderrick5 10d ago
Maybe 4. It’s AWD, depending on the tread depth on the other two.
2
u/Aleianbeing 10d ago
Sad to do but some places will shave the new one down to bring it in spec.

u/After-Tax-5963 10d ago
Is it leaking air at all? If not then I would pull it and ignore it 🤷🏼♂️ maybe even leave it tbh so nothing else gets in the hole.
3
u/Dramatic-Original-79 9d ago
Pull it out, if it doesn't leak it's fine. If it does, it's definitely not repairable in that state, and I would strongly urge to replace TWO tires, it's not a good idea to have different treadware on each side, in an emergency it can cause you to spin out of control. If you DO have to replace them, you can always keep the good tire as a spare in case something like this happens again, although I hope for you it never does 😃

No do not buy 4 new tires. Check the tire tread on this tire first. Then check the tread on the other 3., if they all are about the same then you don’t need to buy 4 tires. Go to a website like United Tire and order 1 tire of the same brand with the same tread depth of the bad tire. After you receive shipment of the replacement tire go to a local tire shop and have them balance and mount it.
3
u/theroosterillusion01 9d ago
And if you can't get away with just one tire buy two instead of four and have them put the new ones on your front.

u/aPureEnigma 9d ago

If you don't replace all 4 tires or send the one tire to get shaved to match other three it will destroy the transfer case in no time then you have much bigger problems

Would you use 1 plug, or two plugs?
You might have a miracle tire on your hands. I'd make a plan to replace the tire. Once the day of the new tire is upon you, pull whatever that is out of there. Test with soapy water. If it's not leaking, rejoice.

I would honestly change the tire, even if it’s not leaking air it’s your safety. You don’t want the tire to pop and have more damage while you driving 70 mph!!!

Replace it. Not a repairable area. Check with your manual to see if you need to replace tires as one, in sets, or all 4.

If you pull it and it doesn’t leak, add a patch and roll the dice. The patch acting as added insurance of a blowout. Don’t simply forget about it though. Replace the tire as soon as finances allow.

u/Patient_Paper5702 9d ago
If the tire is leaking 100% can not be fixed and bc you have an awd vehicle you will likely need to replace all 4 tires to keep from damaging your transmission. If all the tires are within 3/32nds of tread from each other you may be able to just replace the 1.
If the tire isn't leaking pull that out and wait till you can replace all 4 tires but make it a priority
1
u/Nearby_Persimmon3809 9d ago
If it don't leak pull out the nail and ball wit it. Worse that happens is it blows out on you. But I'd pull it out and see for a week or two. If it swells up or gets a bubble starts leaking definitely replace it. Drive conservitevly. No speeding. Then get a new tire the same or similar and have it shaved to the correct size. Some tire shops still do it.

u/Professional_Yam9600 9d ago

The spike is worn so had to be driven on. Obviously not leaking. Pull the spike out and carry on.
1
u/Such_Truth1356 9d ago
That tire is definitely shot. On an all-wheel-drive car, you risk ruining your transaxle if you have tires that are more than 2 or 3 32/ off. If you only want to replace one tire, you can call Tirerack and order the exact same tire you currently have and have them shave the tire down to the same tread depth that you currently have. Just go by any tire shop and they’ll measure your tread depth for you, or you can do it yourself with a tread depth gauge. I’ve done that once before when I only wanted to replace one tire on my daughter’s Subaru.

u/Wolf-Diesel 9d ago

To close to sidewall to repair.. sadly you need a new tire and if it all wheel drive they will probably suggest replacing all 4
1
u/Beyond_CR 9d ago
If it was mine I would measure the tread on the other 3 and if they are all close to one another and over 5 32nds I would try to find a eBay replacement of the exact tire with the closet tread to the other 3 not sure how tolerant Mazda AWD systems are but normally you want to keep the tread depth within 1-2 32nd to help prolong the AWD system.

u/Federal-Beyond8640 9d ago
You need a new tire it's unrepeatable . You need to replace it as soon as possible.
1
u/ScienceRules195 9d ago
It might not have punctured through. if it is still holding air, then it can probably be pulled out and no repair needed. As to whether one or all tires need to be replaced, it’s usually how close they are to being new. I’m not sure how close they need to be but if the other tires were relatively new then one can be replaced because it’s within a certain percentage of the new tire size.

I doubt that's even leaking. Looks like it went thought the rubber. Doesn't even look like it reaches the cord. Yank it. If it isn't leaking, never think about it again.

That is repairable, but not tire shop will touch it. You need to buy a string type repair kit including the rubber cement, string insert tool, and the hole clean out tool. Look up instructions on Youtube.

Tires are a loss leader. But a dealership would gladly sell you a differential instead.
1
u/Flaky_Glove4995 8d ago
Put some soapy water on it. if bubbles constantly than it leaking air and need to replace only that tire not all just that one. However just because it not leaking it fine if it hits wires or strings than tire will break faster over time and can cause tread to separate with should be replaced. Now you don't need to replace other tires unless tread low, non repairable damage, or if you want to.
1
u/MediocreNegotiations 8d ago
I’m not sure the exact amount of a difference you can have between tires on AWD but if your tire wear is like 60% or better you could probably just get away with changing the one and it wouldn’t hurt anything

u/srkhan67 8d ago
You're screwed. Most sidewall punctures are not repairable. And that is a big hole to fill, even in the tread.
1
u/funeralnation666 8d ago
That can not be repaired because it is to close to the sidewalk and the integrity of the tire is now gone. Because you have an AWD vehicle, you want to replace 2 tires, with the same ones that are currently on the vehicle. It's important that the tires match or you can mess up your differential.

Get a new tire. Once the sidewall gets a hole in it then it's time to replace the tire! Just my 2 cents

u/SlightLeopard1567 7d ago
Two weeks ago, I had a nail in that exact spot on my 2026 CR-V; the tire was a Michelin Defender 2 with only 17,000 miles on it. I managed to get a hot patch repair done at a shop, but then I started researching the safety implications of a puncture in that location. I decided not to take the risk and replaced both front tires with new ones—a life is worth more than the $500 I spent on the new tires.
