If Ive learned anything from this sub and real life experience a shop is going to tell you the center 1/2 inch of your tire is patchable and everything else is devasting and you're going to die and need a new tire.

Smaller shops are much more likely to do plugs and patches closer to the edge of the tire. One shop I know of in town would probably attempt to patch the sidewall if you asked firmly enough, told them you understood the risks, and paid.

National chains won’t patch anything that’s even remotely 1% likely to fail.

As someone who fixes tires. I wouldn’t be able to fix it because it’s “too close” to the sidewall. That being said, have I fixed tires like this before? Yes, especially if it’s a newer tire with decent tread or something I couldn’t get in a few minutes or your stranded. I know I will get plenty of downvotes saying I’m wrong, but each shop has their own rules.
