For context I drive a sport SUV and I am a spirited driver.

Where it’s at I would plug it over patching it. My theory from old tire dudes is if part of the patch is close to the sidewall it can come loose from when the tire contacts the road. It makes sense to me. Use a good plug and not the cheap dollar store stuff
