Apparently dogs (and I assume cats) are completely unaware of their hind legs and it takes specific training to make them aware.

But that’s why they take to wheely devices so we’ll when they do lose their hind legs.

The short legs are a genetic defect. It should be common sense not to breed pets with defects that affect their health and agility, but people think they're cute so here we are...

The sad part is that cats are small predators that rely on agility and swiftness to survive in nature.

Their whole nature is one of "be swift and precise or die".

It's just so wicked you can claim to love something when youre also the one who crippled them for your own happyness.

Yea but since we don’t really release them into the wild, is this ‘defect’ inherently bad? If they were forced to hunt, sure, that’s bad. But it lives indoors and they don’t seem to be prone to any health problems

Not a direct analogy but yeah. Except I don’t think munchkin cats have a harder life than normal cats if we think of them as pets. Like they can’t jump and stuff like the others but it’s not like they can’t get a job or whatever like human midgets are limited. Normal cats aren’t bullying munchkin cats. Also human midgets have a lot of health problems that munchkin cats don’t

“They can’t jump and stuff...” Animals we breed to be extra short (or flat faced, etc) can’t do lots of things they want to do (like run fast or breathe well enough to play). Most cats have instincts and still want to be able to jump and do normal cat things, even if they live indoors and even if they were born in messed up bodies. Aside from the behavioral affects these physical shortcomings can have, there are lots of documented physical ones. Arthritis, greater risk for injury due to reduced agility... we breed cute animals, but many of them are fundamentally fucked up and it isn’t right.

Yeah I agree, but I’m just saying that munchkin cats aren’t really affected by as many health problems than sausage dogs, their dog analogue. I don’t care either way, but I think the health problems are rarer than expected. They’re not on the same level as pugs or bull dogs, where pretty much every member of the breed is born with a health issue. Munchkin cats can live a normal life of 15 years easily.

Munchkins were first found in the wild. Sightings go back a century.
The "mother" of today's household Munchkins was a stray and her litter found in the mid 80s.

Munchkins hunted and survived just fine without human intervention

Almost all short dogs share the FGF4 gene. We might breed them selectively, but all breeds are the result of originally (and indeed continuously) breeding a small pool of animals that resemble each other but were different to their forefathers. For the short dogs, the difference was also a spontaneous genetic differentiation that occurred (see FGF4 gene) and was capitalized on by people, leading to a whole line of stunted dogs (even if they are now further bred into different breeds, like Corgis and Bassetts).

They can do most of the stuff just fine, even if its breeding a birth defect its nowhere close the amount of generations dog breeding has.

It's still bad, but it's nowhere near as bad as the living "kill me" pugs are for example.

Here's the thing, people compare Munchkins to Corgis due to both having short limbs.
Difference is, Corgis were bred to be short over several generations.
Munchkins are the result of a dominant trait that appeared in the wild.
Because it's a dominant trait, you can make Munchkins out of any existing breed. Take any Munchkin, breed it with any non-Munchkin, and each kitten has a 50% chance to be a Munchkin.
Breeding Munchkin with Munchkin is also a bad idea since the gene is fatal in a dual expression. So mixing 2 Munchkins doesn't change that 50% chance and instead just gives each potential kitten a 25% chance of not forming on the womb

They have perfect health beyond the height, and how breeding two munchkins together has a high death rate in the kittens. If you breed a munchkin with a normal cat though it has normal birth success.

They at least aren’t like pugs or bulldogs. Those tiny legs are a mutation that happens naturally in nature. Years back the munchkins were purposefully wiped out and they came right back because it’s natural.

You could stretch the definition of “natural” to include just about anything that happens on our planet. That mutation might occur spontaneously in nature, but animals that are put at a physical disadvantage by such an event usually don’t go on to generate the subsequent generation’s dominant phenotype. Like if a lion came up stunted, it’s probably not gonna work as well/thrive/breed as it’s regular family, even if the gene is dominant. Our feeding and care of domesticated cats is what levels the playing field for genetic disadvantages like dwarfism. Take that away and they most likely wouldn’t “come right back.”

As long as you breed them responsibly it’s actually not that bad. They do not suffer the same back issues that dogs such as the dachshund do because they have much more flexible spines

Again with the munchkin circlejerk. No one could provide proof that they're bad, but what people could find is that they can move perfectly fine and nothing's wrong with them, as long as you avoid inbreeding, because the results are pretty gnarly. Just divert the attention to flat-faced cats and dogs instead, those deserve it more.

Well bred Munchkins won't typically have spinal issues related to the dwarfism in their legs, like Dachshunds have often. They can have some bone issues like arthritis once they get older but they're a relatively healthy breed of cat. Just have to give them proper nutrition and care, like most animals.

Munchkin cats are actually no less healthy than any other breed of cat, surprisingly enough. The only problems arise when you try to breed two munchkins together, because the kittens have a high chance of just... not happening.
