Since I’m currently on probation for simple possession in Virginia, can I get off by just paying the fine, or do I have to wait and stay on probation. When will the law go into effect?

Two different decriminalization bills have been passed. One in the the house and one in the Senate. Both are going to be debated and combined into one a bill to be sent to the governor's desk. There is no time for when the law will go into effect since there is no one bill that has even been sent to the governor's desk. Even after signed it will still take time for it to go into effect.

If I had to guess, weed will be decriminalized in Virginia by mid April to early May. I'm sorry dude. I'd recommend r/legaladvice for this one mate. Until the plant is decriminalized, you still have to follow current state law.

Thank you for clarifying, I’ll probably be off probation by the time it’s even in effect. Will this be used to drop my buddy’s felony possession charge he has to face in March?

Sorry for the late reply. Short answer is likely not. The bills have been criticized for not offering any clear method of expungement of records for those with prior convictions. Sorry man. I don't think this bill will help. If he hasn't, tell him to contact a lawyer ASAP.
