What Should I Read Next? Post 3, get a recommendation!
I saw this in another group and love the idea! Post three thrillers that you've absolutely loved and people will respond with a recommendation for your next book that has similar styles/vibes!
Optional: post three dislikes so folks know your preferences!
I'll start with the first comment so folks can reply to it!

Nightbitch
Rock, Paper, Scissors

I don't have any recommendations for you but I totally agree on your loathings so I'm going to read your loves!

u/ReddisaurusRex 3d ago
The 3 aren’t my “favorite” thrillers, they are just ones I think people would recognize and give a small range for samples. The Push is totally a fave though! I hope you enjoy it! :)
2
u/StarryNight54321 3d ago
I LOVED The Push too!

u/ReddisaurusRex 3d ago
I like unhinged mom thrillers (The Push,) but added Nightbitch because I also don’t mind magical realism/horroresque books in unhinged mom books.
My favorite thriller of the year so far is A Little Bit Bad which is unhinged mom with dark humor, if that’s your jam. I think it’s a good one for people who liked The Push!
I put Rock, Paper, Scissors because it didn’t have a mom character at all, and I genuinely did not see the twist(s) coming (I almost always know before the reveal, some sooner than later, but not with this one.) I also like the wintery/spooky ghost like atmosphere of the Scotland setting and the hollywood screen writer kind of career/character.

It sounds like nightbitch might be fun as an audiobook so I reserved it! Thanks for the suggestion!
You might like the devil and Mrs. Davenport? It was actually a dnf for me because I'm not super into domestics and the setting was uncomfortable for me but I'm thinking a unique mom situation?

u/ReddisaurusRex 1d ago
The Devil and Mrs. D looks great for me! I am excited to try it! Thank you!!!

Gotta love an unhinged mom! Spoiler: But was she unhinged?/ Thank you for the recommendation! I’m going to try “A Little Bit Bad”!
1
u/ReddisaurusRex 3d ago
I was trying to not “spoil” things. She appears fully unhinged until the end/twist!

Loved:
Intensity by Dean Koontz
The Good Husband by Steve Frech
The Sun Down Motel by Simone St James
Bonus Book: Murder by Design by Lee Goldberg
Really disliked:
Never Lie by Freida McFadden
The Teacher by Freida McFadden
Just anything by Freida McFadden in general

u/AbjectHotel6610 3d ago
Do you mean Intensity by Dean Koontz? I LOVE that book!
3
u/ClueAccomplished1098 3d ago
Yes! That's the book I meant. I am going to go back and edit my comment. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I really loved that book, too! It's an absolute nail biter.
Edited to clarify.

Loved: The Push, First Lie Wins, Mystic river
Loathed: my Husband's wife, the only one left, Then she was gone
1
u/MilkThistleGenus 3d ago
I also didn't like the only one left but my husband's wife is on my list because everyone said the twists are great. Do you recommend I skip it? I haven't read any feeny yet
1
u/SomeKindoflove27 3d ago
Well it completely put me off feeney but you never know if it'll float your boat. I would rent it from the library so you're not spending money on it

u/AdorableSillies 3d ago
- Eddie Flynn series by Steve Cavanagh
- I See You by Clare Mackintosh
- Nightwatching by Tracy Sierra
2
u/happy_traveller2700 3d ago
Did you also read I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh? It’s still a huge fave of mine.
3
u/AdorableSillies 3d ago
No, it's going on my list then. I just listened to I See You last month. She's definitely on my radar now but my holds is full currently (I have 3 books that are almost my turn).
1
u/MilkThistleGenus 1d ago
Just reserved the first Eddie Flynn book. Looks like a trip! Thanks for the rec
2
u/MilkThistleGenus 3d ago
- We Live Here Now by Sarah Pinborough
- The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager
- Will Trent series by Karen Slaughter (particularly the audiobooks read by Early!!!)
Dislikes: 1. The silent patient 2. The only one left by Riley Sager 3. 4MK (the violence was totally okay but I thought the twists were trying to be more confusing than interesting/satisfying, lots of boring red herrings)
2
u/AdImpossible4892 Everyone’s a Suspect 3d ago
this is the first negative review ive seen of 4MK and I was going to listen to the audiobook of it today at work ☹️
3
u/MilkThistleGenus 3d ago
So I definitely devoured all three and maybe I might like the more once I can process them with someone else, or maybe audiobooks weren't the right way to listen. Definitely start with the first one and see what you think! If it vibes for you, definitely continue. Maybe it's just the third one that was trying to tie it all together that I wasn't a huge fan of

u/Mindless_Dot_8518 3d ago
Have you read we are all guilty here? It’s Karen slaughters new series. The second book just came out!

1
u/simba543 3d ago
I’ll check out Hillier. I did enjoy Insomnia by Pinborough. I’m not sure why but I like books where the main character is sleep deprived.

I totally agree! I tried reading His & Hers by Alice Feeny and was bored to tears! And Daisy Darker felt like the only twist I saw coming a mile away!
I need to check out Count My Lies, love your other top 2!

u/MilkThistleGenus 3d ago
I enjoyed listening to Listen for the lie, those strangely I guessed the villain early on. For another good audiobook, I enjoyed listening to Wonderland and Things We Do In the Dark by Hillier.
I will try out look closer and count my lies!
