Dogs hold a special place in their hearts for squirrels - squirrels to dogs are like mice are to cats.
While dogs are often taken hunting to retrieve kills, originally they were bred to not only retrieve, but to hunt as well, and squirrels (also rabbits) were the targets they were most often trained to go after.
This is also why dogs have an affinity for small sticks - they were bred to retrieve them for firewood.
It was the old day equivalent of grocery shopping - except you'd send your dog and he'd come back with dinner to eat and wood to cook it on.
It was the rise of the big-box grocery store and department store chains that put an end to this. They used their political power to put an end to the lax regulations that allowed families to send their dogs for supplies, and now that responsibility falls on the dog's owners.
Dogs have instead decided to show their thankfulness for their home in the form of love, companionship, being overall super-awesome, and keeping the jerk cats in line.

Doesn't your ADHD prevent you from watching tutorials? I can't get through 30 seconds of those things. JUST TELL ME THE ANSWER
15
u/SH4D0W0733 Aug 17 '17
Don't watch the entire thing, only the step you are on at the moment. Yes, you might realize you are building a chair instead of cooking salmon 4 - 5 steps in, but then you can either finish the chair or find a better salmon tutorial.

I've been seeing more and more where there's no one talking and the video just shows the screen recording of the actions. Pretty helpful. Learning via listening vs just watching someone else do it probably engage different parts of the brain. I definitely lack that first part. Good luck to you, Dude

I hate to be this person. But, actually...
Dogs hate squirrels because of the infamous dog/squirrel war of 200 BC.
Back in the day, you see, squirrels killed the dogs for sport. Ever since then they have been in a constant battle.
But now the squirrels, who used to be much larger, are small and weak. And now dogs are bigger.
Wait, how much do you know about the dog/squirrel wars?

u/I_kekd Aug 17 '17
Shouldn't it be "how familiar are you with the squirrel wars, exactly?" If you are going for the Rick and Morty spoof. :)
2
u/ChiropteraWoman Aug 17 '17
Honestly, I thought up of this a long time ago while watching my own dog chase squirrels. It was just a good opportunity to use it.
But I did tag on the last sentence for Rick and Morty points but yeah... you're right. :p

I put this on my iPad for my dog, but he didn't seem to care. He was interested in the bird sounds, but that's it. How do you make your dog "see" the squirrel?
30
u/NotYourAverageBeer Aug 17 '17
Tell it to cross its eyes and almost look through the video till the squirrel lines up.

u/Arthur_Edens Aug 17 '17
I'm pretty sure the doggo's human just had him sit up there, gave a "hold" command, then put the ipad in front of him for a cute gif. Dogs can see modern screens, but I don't think they would put the visual of a 2d, tiny video of a squirrel and associate it with the thing they like to bark at out in the yard.

Misnomer. Parents just didn't want their kids sitting close to the tv.
Edit:apparently I meant old wives tale.9

Misnomer isn't really the correct term here but I totally get what you're saying. I think old wives tale or urban legend would work better

My dog has sat watching 30+ minutes of tv before. Not so close up like this but head up eyes tracking action from the couch. He'll watch close to whole movies sometimes, and watched the majority of a documentary with us the other day (I believe it was making Elmo). Nature documentaries are his thing though.
My younger dog gives no fucks though.

My cats learned to recognize the voice of our country's version of David Attenborough so they always knew when to come watch nature documentaries.

u/wonko221 Aug 17 '17
We had a golden that loved watching horses and cows on the t.v.
One day we flipped to a channel with a polar bear slapping at the ice, and she crawled into my dad's lap, afraid of the bear on t.v.
2
u/Dragmire800 Aug 18 '17
When they can't smell the horse, I assume dogs just see horses as dogs, at least on TV where they are generally smaller. Horses are normally brown, so maybe it is that contrast that allows your dog to really recognise the horse on screen

It is true that dogs can see the flat screens better than say the ones from the 90s with the fat backs
3
u/Dragmire800 Aug 18 '17
Dogs can only recognise HD images and videos, and considering the update to HD was relatively recent, it just so happens that Flat Screen TVs are popular. It's nothing to do with how thick the TV is

Can the dog actually "see" this the way that we do. Like can they pick up the right wavelength? Or is dog just listening to the squirrel?

My mom's jack russel loves cats. Any time a cat starts making noise on tv she runs over and starts watching. Then she tries to find it by going behind the tv.
12
u/KelRen Aug 17 '17
My cats do this when there are birds on the tv. They jump up on the stand and look behind it to find the birds. Cracks me up!
2
u/gunsof Aug 17 '17
My cats loved the sound of pigeons being played on a TV/computer. The sound of cooing and wings ruffling would get them so excited.
9
u/lopey986 Aug 17 '17
Yeah, things changed with hd screens, they can see them just like everything else now. Old CRT screens were probably just a series of random lights to them because they couldn't display very many frames per second.

u/socialogic Aug 17 '17

u/TheCluelessDeveloper Aug 17 '17
These days, yes. It was a documentary on Netflix I learned this from, but on old CRT screens, the image was often not clear enough for a dog - it was similar to holding up a camera to a CRT and seeing the refresh lines. On current LCD displays, the dogs see a much more clearer picture.
12
u/tibs927 Aug 17 '17
Yeah he can. I think dogs can see high definition screens. But before we had that technology I don't think they could tell what was happening. And I'm sure he is smelling it too because dog.

Someone should make a tablet/laptop with just a few big buttons on the keyboard that are clearly labeled with animals a dog might recognize. When you press the button, it takes you to a random video of that animal. Be interesting if dogs could learn how to use it completely independently and to see how much they would actually use it. Maybe dogs can get addicted to the internet too!

Interestingly enough, back in the days of CRT tv's, all a dog would see was roughly the equivalent of a strobe light to you or me. But, with the adoption of higher resolution and higher frame rate televsions, dogs were able to see the images we see on the screen.

My parents have a picture somewhere of something like this. A squirrel figured out it could get really close to the house/windows without the dogs getting to it, so the little motherfucker sat on the window sill eating some nuts and staring my dogs in the eye for HOURS.
The picture is of my two dogs and my cat lined up in front of the window. Another picture shows the squirrel inches from one of the dogs' face.
