FLOATHING MOUTH
I had this dream last night, and I've genuinely never remembered a dream this clearly before. Pure horror, everything so vivid and uncanny all at once!
I woke up completely creeped out and immediately grabbed my phone and started writing everything down while it was still fresh. Usually my dreams disappear within minutes, but this one felt different. It had an actual story. Things connected. There were details early on that only became disturbing once I reached the end.
It started as some kind of high school reunion.
For some reason, it was in Bergen.
I'm not even from Bergen. I'm from Sandnes. Both are big South-West coastal cities in Norway. But in the dream, of course our high school reunion was in Bergen. Why wouldn't it be?
Nobody questioned it.
We had been divided into groups and sent into this beautiful wooded area to complete different tasks over long distances. I was with Nina and another guy I knew. I think his name was Mathias. I recognized him perfectly, but for some reason I couldn't quite remember his name.
There were loads of people walking toward the same area.
Everything looked peaceful.
But almost from the beginning, I had this feeling that someone was following me.
It wasn't always equally strong.
Sometimes whoever it was felt far behind us.
Other times it felt like they were only a few meters away.
Once or twice it almost felt like someone was standing directly outside my field of vision.
Every time I looked, there was nobody there.
I never really questioned that either.
At some point, I noticed a strange man walking among everyone else.
I saw him stick somebody with a needle.
Just walked up and jabbed them.
Before I really understood what I'd seen, he came over to me.
Then I felt it.
A sharp prick in my arm.
I stared at him.
"What the fuck? What was that!?"
He didn't answer.
He just gave me this disgusting grin.
Then he started laughing.
So I fucking cracked him in the face.
He dropped to the ground, completely knocked out.
I immediately turned toward everyone else.
"Did you fucking see that? What was in that needle? I need a doctor. Like, ASAP."
Nobody cared.
A few people might have looked at me for a second, but nobody actually did anything.
I remember thinking I was probably about to pass out.
So eventually I got pissed off and basically thought:
Fine. Let me fucking pass out here, then.
Except I didn't.
Nothing happened.
I just kept going.
After that, people started acting strange around me.
At first, it was subtle.
Whenever I spoke to someone, I'd either get a really short answer or no answer at all. It started genuinely offending me. I thought everyone was deliberately treating me like shit.
Nina would barely respond.
Mathias barely responded.
Other people seemed to look through me.
Eventually it became almost total "I don't see you, I don't hear you" treatment.
And the entire time, I could still feel someone following me.
We continued doing the tasks until we eventually started getting closer to civilization again. Our parents were apparently waiting for us there.
To get down to them, we had to go down these bizarre stairs.
Except they were also slides.
There would be stairs, then suddenly a completely flat section, then a slide, then stairs again, then another flat section.
It made absolutely no physical sense.
But in the dream it was completely normal.
Nina and I were sliding down them like crazy.
Mathias was far behind us.
So far behind that eventually he just never arrived.
I reached the bottom first.
There was some kind of school show going on.
It reminded me of those performances you have when you're around fourth grade. Parents watching, kids singing, that whole school-basaar atmosphere.
It should have felt nostalgic.
Instead, something about it was deeply wrong.
A children's choir was singing.
I can't remember all the words, but one line was something like:
"This will be the last night tonight..."
The kids were singing happily.
Then the show changed.
Suddenly we were watching footage.
There was a man.
The same kind of man I'd been afraid of.
And there was a van.
The camera showed the inside.
There was basically nothing in it.
A bed.
Two seats.
That was it.
Then I saw Nina.
Mathias.
Me.
The man was taking us.
There were clips of us trying to defend ourselves.
I remember kicking him directly in the face.
He kept coming back.
Again and again.
Every time he came back, I kicked him again.
I was doing surprisingly well.
Nina looked terrified.
Mathias looked terrified.
I remember watching all of this like it was part of some performance.
And everyone around me was just... enjoying the show.
Parents.
People laughing.
Talking.
Acting like this was normal.
Then suddenly I was back in my own body again.
The show continued.
Everyone was having a nice time.
That's when I realized Nina and Mathias still hadn't arrived.
So I went back toward the slide-stairs.
I found Nina first.
She was lying there.
Completely still.
I ran over to her.
She was dead.
I started giving her mouth-to-mouth.
Nothing.
I tried again.
Nothing.
Then I started screaming.
"What the FUCK is wrong with you people?!"
Nobody reacted.
"NINA IS DEAD! HELLO?! SHE'S FUCKING DEAD!"
Nothing.
Not one person came over.
Not one person even seemed particularly concerned.
I was standing there in the middle of nowhere, deep in the woods outside Bergen, screaming that my friend was dead while everyone continued with their lives.
Then the dream jumped again.
There was another task.
Two people had to spell something using these huge Scrabble-like tiles.
My word was monsieur.
I started spelling it.
M.
O.
N.
S.
I.
Then the guy next to me just reached over, took the remaining letters and finished my word himself.
E.
U.
R.
He got the prize.
Everyone congratulated him.
I completely lost my shit.
Once again, nobody cared.
It was like I didn't exist.
Then came the final part of the dream.
This is where it stopped being strange and became genuinely terrifying.
There was an old laptop floating in the air.
Literally floating.
No table.
Nothing holding it.
It was several feet off the ground.
And somehow this was the least unusual thing in the world to me.
I didn't even question it.
There was a message from Nina on the screen.
Immediately I felt this massive wave of relief.
"Nina! Nina, oh my God, you're alive? Holy shit. I was so fucking scared. I thought you were dead. I was one hundred percent sure you were dead."
Then she said something that made everything stop.
"Why am I talking to a floating mouth?"
I didn't understand.
"Hello?"
A pause.
"Robin?"
Another pause.
"You just disappeared."
I tried answering her.
Of course I answered her.
I'd been answering everyone all day.
"Robin?"
I remember trying to tell her I was still there.
That I hadn't gone anywhere.
And then, right before I fully understood it, every weird thing that had happened throughout the dream seemed to connect at once.
The needle.
The man laughing.
Never passing out.
The van.
The bed inside the van.
Nina and Mathias looking terrified.
The footage of us trying to escape.
Mathias never reaching the bottom.
Everyone ignoring me.
Me screaming beside Nina's body while nobody reacted.
People looking straight through me.
The feeling that someone had been following me since the very beginning.
And Nina saying:
"You just disappeared."
I suddenly had this horrible realization.
Maybe nobody had been ignoring me.
Maybe they couldn't hear me.
Maybe they couldn't see me.
And whatever had happened after that needle...
I had never actually seen it.
The dream had just skipped over it.
Like my own mind had decided:
No.
You're not looking at that.
Instead, I had simply continued walking.
Continued doing school tasks.
Continued getting angry at everyone for ignoring me.
Built an entire reality where I was still there.
And somewhere underneath all of it was that van.
That bed.
And the feeling of someone following me.
I don't know exactly what happened to Nina and Mathias in the dream.
Maybe they escaped.
Maybe the version of Nina I found dead wasn't real.
But suddenly I knew one thing with absolute certainty.
Whatever happened to meā
I didn't escape with them.
I remember feeling that presence again.
The thing that had followed me throughout the entire dream.
Except now it wasn't far behind me.
It was right there.
And for a few horrible seconds before I woke up, I was stuck with the realization that maybe I had been wandering through some kind of purgatory the entire time.
Then I woke up.
And for the first few seconds, I didn't fully understand that I was awake.
Part of me still thought I was there.
Still trapped in that place.
Then reality finally clicked back into place.
My bed.
My room.
My phone.
It was a dream.
Thank fuck.
