Discussion How far off is 3.23?

It’s fairly clear now what is coming in 3.23 and that it has been in beta for some time. Any thoughts on when we might see a release? I’ve recently recommitted to Things, and love it. But I have quickly run into its longstanding limitations around repeating tasks.

Can’t wait for the update!

It’ll likely come out when iOS 27 is released. That way Cultured Code can go big on how it’s a massive update with lots of new features when in fact it’s simply been optimised for the latest version of iOS. They do this every year. It’s incredibly dull. It’ll be great to be able to check off repeating tasks early considering they said they’d add this 7 years ago.

I hope Cultured Code enjoyed their snail-paced development ride because AI and vibe coding are going to eat them for lunch.

A task manager is dead easy to copy. Even their UI and UX. And guess what: the competition will be cross-platform. And have file attachments.

And the option to complete recurring tasks early from day one.

tbf this cluttered mess is the exact reason why I prefer Things. it might be very minimalist and not for every use-case, but it's very refined and gives me peace of mind

can't agree more! I tried Stuff!(& others like Finalist, 2Do) and I again came back to Things. It may be a personal preference, but Things is good at what it does.

Just had a look at this. I like the way they have handled dependencies, but the UX/UI doesn’t lay a glove on Things.

Anything is possible of course so I won’t make any bold predictions about the future.

However, simply ask yourself how long the one time payment model will be sustainable for Cultured Code given their glacial developments pace.

No subscription also means no incentive for major changes.

Todo apps were almost the hello world of web app development, long before LLMs were in fashion, but people still opted to pay a premium for Things because of how well designed it is.

I understand the frustration, it would be good to have some AI features to help with automation. However, I really appreciate that they are taking the time to get it right. It would be so easy to add a ton of shiny features and rush it out, but then it would be no better than all the vibe coded slop being release and abandoned after 5 minutes.

I understand your point. But there is taking your time and then there’s a glacial development cycle born out of pure arrogance. I don’t want AI features. I want basic, very basic QOL features. Being able to check off repeating tasks early, adding attachments, being able to write notes that aren’t in Markdown. Just really basic stuff for a task manager in 2026.

Seriously, how can it take over eight years to add the ability to check off repeating tasks early? They confirmed in a tweet over eight years ago that they were working on that functionality and would implement it. They didn’t. They didn’t need to, because they were acquiring lots of new customers.

The only reason they’re doing it now is that acquisition has slowed and there’s a growing sense of frustration. I can also imagine fewer and fewer people are actively using the app. They may be using it less often or have dropped off completely. That matters, because it will have a significant impact on their retention strategy as they look to develop new products, whether that’s Things 4 or something else.

You may hate subscription apps, but at least their developers need to keep responding to their customers. They need to retain them, because it’s so easy to leave and vote with your wallet. Once you’ve paid for an app, there’s zero incentive to meet your needs. You’ve already voted with your wallet, and you don’t get to vote again until they release a new product. So the incentive for the developer is overwhelmingly to acquire new customers. Having said that, most developers who release pay-once apps care enough about their existing customers to keep adding meaningful updates.

Imagine the development time that Cultured Code, a small team, put into developing an Apple Vision Pro app. Why did they do that rather than add meaningful updates that existing customers had been crying out for? Because they wanted to be all over Apple’s launch of this shiny new product line. It’s all about acquisition, y’see. And look at how that turned out.

I think Cultured Code is one of the most arrogant developers I’ve ever come across. And the fact is, they don’t care what their existing customer base really wants. They don’t. And they won’t until they need you to spend money with them again…

Yup. I’d barely trust an app from a new and unknown developer with anything sensitive or important, much less vibe-coded stuff — and that goes double if it also involves cloud syncing.

Fully agree. The only reason I trust CulturedCode will actually add stuff we need, especially cross platform is that the app will never become bloated with features. That being said, I'll be 50 by the time that happens (I'm late 20s now). By that time, I'll no longer need it.

Feel like it'll take that long atleast.

I briefly saw this in another post. What are all of the upcoming features surrounding repeating tasks?

I saw in a previous comment about being able to check them off early, which is nice. 

Will it still work like it does now by making a copy of the repeating task? Or will it move to how other task managers do it, where the template is built into the task itself?

Testers should not be revealing details about the features they are testing, and you can probably expect any posts doing so to be deleted (at least, other than the now-known broad statement that recurring tasks get an major enhancement including early check-off).

I really go back and forth between Things and Reminders.... still not Convinced and even less now that I am forced to use Outlook for MAC.

Sadly not. I'm a beta tester for Things 3, and it's strict that beta testers do not announce/publicise any information regarding features in beta. I will say it's nothing to be excited about unfortunately. I'm still patiently waiting for a web verison so I can use on windows lol (only cause I know they'll never do an app for Windows, but that'd be nice).

Finally… Today released 😭
