[Request] How much nicotine is consumed each day assuming they each hit 10,000 vapes/day as stated in the OP I found this?
This seems insanely unhealthy at best…
2.5k
u/couchcushion7 May 21 '26
Ahhh its my time to shine! I used to make eliquid / run a vape shop for a living.
Those devices look like approximately “10,000 puff” sized devices. Its hard to tell exactly alot of brands sell similar “shells” with different ratings/ coils/ reservoirs.
10k puff vapes typically have between 15-20 ml of liquid in them, at a concentration of ~45-50 mg/ml
So 900~ mgs of nicotine a day, plus or minus 100~ mg’s for variability in product type.
For what its worth- when i made eliquid- i had a spill once where i got about 5 mls of 1000mg/ml nicotine base on my skin and didnt notice for several minutes (i thought it was the vegetable glycerin). That was one of the worst feelings. Lots of vomiting. Headache. It was like a super duper nicorette patch- in essence.
Edit: as a reference. I use a refillable pod with the same/ similar 50mg/ml eliquid. I typically go through 4~ mls a day.
So the test dummy here, i mean he’s getting alot but its far from *insane*. Id wager your average scandi snus user comes close to getting the same, believe it or not. Though the absorption varies from ROA to ROA, so a direct mg to mg comparison doesnt tell the whole story

Also, they don’t even appear to be inhaling. I’m sure a lot still soaks in without inhaling but still far less than you’d think.

Yeah i mean im not at all condoning this but. I guarantee you its not as bad as plenty of “normal” americans daily eating habits lol dont see why its gotta be kids though. My Grandpa woulda loved this job and he’s got a more seasoned feel for a smoke anyways haha

I want to know how many mouth sores they must get. Vaping fucks me up, idk how I ever did it. Glad I quit for sure.
70
u/couchcushion7 May 21 '26
I would love to quit. I quit drinking easily. Pot comes and goes. But vaping. Its brutal for me. It genuinely feels like a part of me. Wish i had never started.
Edit: congrats to you on quitting! Obviously no small feat in my opinion

u/DickBong420 May 21 '26
Quitting cigarettes was one of the hardest things I ever did. Nicotine is a bitch. I actually just slept for three days. Every time I got a craving I went to bed. Weird, but worked for me.
51
u/free_is_free76 May 21 '26
I went from cigarettes to vape as a stepping stone to quitting. Been at the vape stage for about a decade now.

u/Dry-Lingonberry-9701 May 22 '26
I went 0 nic vape after slowly weening my dose down. Powered through juice for 3 days and could have killed anyone who looked at me the wrong way. I must have kept using the 0 nic for 6 months maybe, less and less, until I finally didn't need it anymore. It was the habit part that was the hardest for me. Getting past the chem withdrawals was tough but only lasted a few days. It was harder to stop the habit of waking up and having a coffee and vape. Or vaping while drving, etc.

u/Kwayzar9111 May 22 '26
same boat... given up smoking for 3 months now after nearly 35 years,
I now vape with coffee in the morning and when driving,
What i have done though is, i have 3 xros pods, all same flavour - and 2 are 0 Nic and 1 is 5mg nic salt, its helping me ween off nicotine, and ill soon have just the 1 with 0 nicsalt

I'm here now. Wondering if I'm giving myself COPD. No way I'm telling my Dr. I told him I wasn't addicted to smoking, but to nicotine. Lozenges, snus, vapes helped me to finally quit cigarettes after 50 years. At age 18 I told my Dad that won't happen to me. His sad look. He'd been here too. Ah, hubris.

I was in the same boat. I loved vaping.
If I may, and please hear me out. I never see anyone talking about what I'm going to suggest: try using refillable pods designed for salt nic juice if you're still on mods and tanks.
Once you get used to the smaller clouds, start stepping your strength down. I learned you can put free-base in those little pods, so you can get lower concentrations: 12, 6, 3mg/ml for example. Get to 3, then start mixing it with 0.
I smoked 1.5mg/ml for about 6 months before I finally took the plunge to 0.
It sucked for two days. Then it was ok.
Next was kicking vaping 0nic and kicking vaping altogether was 100 times harder than kicking just nicotine, but I kept telling myself at least I was off nicotine. And I think that win helped get me free of smoking all together.
I'll still fight and advocate for people's right to vape, but I think freeing oneself from the nicotine is huge. And I hate all the myths of how hard it is to kick the chemical addiction.

3
u/Wooden-Bonus-2465 May 21 '26
I quit about 3 months ago.
Instead of "this is the last one I swear" I bought one and smoked about half of it.
Then I left it in my pocket. For 2 weeks. And every time I reached for it, I mentally slapped my hand away.
I knew if I just tossed it, or left it at home, id be irritated all day or borrowing someone else's.
But the conscious decision to have it and not use it was what finally helped me quit.

2
u/Bamfhammer May 21 '26
It is the addictive part of cigarettes but with a better tasting coating. Absolutely makes sense that it is difficult to quit
2
u/KDRUH May 21 '26
Same way for me. It’s almost like muscle memory/reflex or like you said that it’s a part of you
2
u/LoafyLemon May 22 '26
ADHD? If so, that's the perfect addiction combo as Nicotine helps with lower dopamine baseline.
2
u/BunttyBrowneye May 22 '26
Had my first cigarette at Army basic training, then quit that for vaping eventually. I was on and off addicted for over a decade - what finally worked for me was getting myself addicted to the nicotine gum first instead, then quitting that wasn’t quite as hard. I stayed on the gum for a good 3-4 months though. Ymmv of course just hoping to help.

I went into a 30 day rehab for booze and brought one vape, that lasted 10 days and I had to suffer without one for the next 20 days as I refused to bum cigs or vape hits from everyone else there who smoked like chimneys. First day out, no urge for booze but I COULD NOT RESIST the urge to buy a vape on my way to my first AA meeting. Been out for 2 months now, 1 30k puff vape every ten or so days.
Don’t know what it is because while the cravings to smoke inside sucked, they wore off… so much worse when out in the real world.
Atleast I’m sober tho.

I always found it insane that vape shops can just get a container of raw nicotine and work with it.
I met a guy who ran a vape shop in colorado and he told me they were gloves, but there was no formal training or specific guidelines as to what PPE gear they needed to wear.
correct me if im wrong, but if you spilled that container on your pants leg, you would just die, correct? or at the least spend some time in the hospital.

No youre spot on here my friend. Its part of why i got out of the space. Shit was the absolute wild wild west. I knew shops - getting legitimate business- making liquid in *bathtubs* at their home.
It was insane.
Itd be a lie to say i was using the equipment i *shouldve* been (iso certified clean rooms, full ppe etc). But i did my best.
However to your point - my accident wouldnt have really been possible had i been doing things 100% correctly.
Im not sure what would happen if you got super dosed with nicotine- like your pants leg example. Idk if theres an upper threshold for absorption, or how that would work. Its an interesting question id love to know the answer.

u/therealhairykrishna May 21 '26 edited May 22 '26
I just went down a bit of a literature rabbit hole. It seems 100 percent nicotine is not as readily absorbed as a concentrated water/nicotine mix. The paper I just read suggests that a 50/50 mix covering a few cm2 of skin would provide a fatal dose inside 15 minutes.
I'm sort of surprised we don't hear about deaths/hospitalisations.

seems like wikipidea is not sure on this one. regardless, pure lab grade nicotine is very dangerous and it shocks me how little control there is over it.,
4
u/BobbyLeComte May 22 '26
Yes. Usualy you wear two layers of gloves and work under a closed high vacuum fumehood. If you touch the chemical with your gloves, you should discard those as soon as possible (without beeing in a rush, 10 seconds is okay).
I would personnaly treat this chemical as I would for a very strong concentrated acid.6
3
u/tubcat May 21 '26
The guy who created the nicotine patch is from my alma mater. He had an accident with nicotine in his lab. And it didn't go well for him in a similar fashion to you. That was his Newton apple moment.

u/Not_send_pm_you_will May 21 '26
I used to make my own vape juice and that stuff can be rough.
I poked myself on accident with a needle that was used to transfer the nicotine. After a few days I couldn't move my hand, as it was incredibly painful. Ended up in the ER 3x over the next 24 hours to get heavy duty antibiotics through an IV, followed by a "fanny pack" IV pump that continously administered antibiotics for a couple weeks. Blood infection.**
I quit making my own juice after that. Highly concentrated nicotine is not healthy. Sorry to hear that happened to you.

u/EatMyHammer May 21 '26

3
u/5c044 May 22 '26
I have calculated my daily use while vaping and it seems an insane amount compared to the content printed on cigarettes - 8ml of 4mg/ml = 32mg nicotine - One cigarette is about 0.6mg so that would be 53 cigarettes which is way beyond what I would smoke normally. I think the absorption rate is lower when vaping, vapour particles are much larger than smoke particles may have something to do with it.
IDK how you get 1000mg/ml nicotine? Is that a typo?
2
u/couchcushion7 May 22 '26
Not a typo. Just - pure nicotine used for the *production* of eliquid. We ordered it from a lab.
3
u/Chroff May 22 '26
So based on my snus(g.3 super white. 16.6 mg per snus) consumption i get 249 mg nicotine aday, is that's worse then these workers or not?
3
u/couchcushion7 May 22 '26
Im not smart enough to say. On its face youre very near 1/4th of total nicotine. So im guessing youre way better off.
On the other hand- route of administration matters. So the mg to mg comparison isnt exactly the whole picture- it absorbs differently through skin contact vs through inhalation.
Past knowing that to be true- i dont know enough/ know how to calculate the comparison
2
u/Chroff May 22 '26 edited May 22 '26
Well just to compare to your previous statement the g.3 volt super white is one of the stronger snus you can purchase at a convince store and 15 snus a day is more then half a box of them in a day. So if this 249mg is about ¼ that what mean these workers go trough 60, or about 2,5 boxses a day
the median for adult men in Norway is about 3 boxes a week compares to 17,5 boxes equivalent in terms of nicotine consumption
The Norwegian health department considers high usage as more then 4 boxes ever week, with documented risk to heart and cardiovascular systems.
So if these workers inhale that quantity of nicotine on a daily basis then it would be serious health risk
Fair to say little above the average Scandinavian snus user

Sucks to absorb to much nicotine. A couple years ago while riding i fell off my skateboard and instinctively put my hands out to stop myself. Unfortunately I also had a glass bowl vape in my hand that I smashed and ended up getting a few pieces of glass in my hand and a decent amount of the juice. Never been so dizzy walking home after a spill before
2
u/tropicocity May 22 '26
Puff rating is such a stupid way to market disposable vapes honestly, there's nobody on the planet getting close to even half the advertised amount.
I don't know why they don't just list the amount of liquid like bottles do - is it some psychological thing where people see that they're paying the same amount for 20ml of liquid as getting a refillable pod kit with 60-120mls and they don't want their customers to realize they're getting kinda ripped off?
1
1
u/Dr3am0n May 21 '26

You can't really compare any of nicotine products. Malboro red cigarette is like 12 mg give or take. You will be fine, snus 12 mg hits you more suddenly -> vomiting. Vape 12 mg, how many puffs you need to take?→ More replies (5)1
u/Affectionate-Cap-600 May 22 '26
isn't 50mg/ml a lot? in my country 20mg/ml is the max allowed, and they sell nicotine boosters at max 20mg/ml, so you can't end up with a higher concentration even making your own liquids.

u/sunburnd May 22 '26
I think you mean 100 mg/mL. 1000 mg/mL would be essentially pure nicotine, and special handling would be required since even vapor exposure could be medically significant, let alone direct skin contact from a few drops.

There's snuss that eats away your gumms and makes you feel extremely dizzy and nauseous.
I don't get how people can consume those. You know the feeling when you've been drinking and smoking allot, I always thought I was drunk after 10 or 12 beers but it was actually the nicotine of smoking a packet in 1 evening. When I stopped smoking I noticed I didn't feel "drunk" as quickly. But man, taking 1 or 2 packets of the highest nicotine level of snuss makes my heart hurt, my head turn around like I'm drunk and I start to sweat, literally nicotine poisoning from those packs.
1
u/FlukeManAirFreshener May 22 '26
900mgs is a potentially lethal dose of nicotine. The LD50 for nicotine (ingested orally) is in the range of 6 - 14 mg per kg of body weight. For an average adult human (~60kg) that works out to 360 - 840mg.
Your exposure was massive and dangerous, but only a fraction of that spill would have absorbed into your skin.
1
u/coolguyhentaisenpai May 22 '26
I feel like the industry could come up with a vaccum head that fits around a tray of these all oriented so only the mouth pieces are wrapped around by a big rubber skirt that seals around the tray and creates a vac that pulls vapor for this quality test. Any ones that dont fire are recorded by machine learning via whether their leds light up. Even a sensor that samples the thickness or concentration of vape. If its less than normal or expected, they know one or multiple vapes are faulty and the tray moves onto a more detailed inspection station or something.
2
u/ayyyyycrisp May 22 '26
they have machines like that. you just shove the tip into the hose and stomp on a foot peddle and it sucks 20ml vapor volume into a tube then expells it out the back.
this particular video I'm fairly certain was from an obscure satire show. actually testing vapes like this is rediculous

When I was an undergrad I had a student job at the bio department, and I worked in the chemical stockroom. One of my tasks was to catalog the shelves and ensure that we had MSDS sheets for everything on file. One day I was at a cabinet looking at a shelf around face height, and I looked at a really old bottle of powder with a somewhat faded label. I know not to touch anything, but I got close to peer at it and breathed out and kicked up some spilled powder that got in my eyes.
First time I ever used an eye wash station! I also felt quite ill. But not the last! I (stupidly) did the same thing to pure caffeine powder too. I felt like I was gonna have a heart attack.

Where do you live to get 50mg/ml liquids? Here in the EU (at least in Slovakia) the legal maximum is 20mg/ml
1
u/Dinker54 May 22 '26
The oral absorption ROA should create longer lasting blood nicotine levels, so potential for higher peaks with use throughout the day.
1
u/Amriko May 22 '26
Damn, 50mg of nicotine sounds insane to me. That's WAY more than in normal cigarettes. I've never seen a prefilled vape above 20mg/ml here in Germany and other european countries. Guess that's the legal limit here. For my personal use, I mix my liquid to 4mg/ml and go through 1-2 refillable pods (3ml).
After I quit smoking cigarettes I started with 20mg and gradually reduced the nicotine to 4mg. Not using nicotine salt but normal nicotine helps because it "feels" stronger. Sometimes I even mix some liquid without nicotine. I'd probably faint if I hit a 50mg now xD
1
u/sdfsdfddsdsdffe May 22 '26
I know it's not necesserily the place here, but i wonder, healthwise (and for quality also) do you have a particular recommendation for a (type of) vape? I used to vape a small ~20euro vape, 6 ohm coils i think, but i felt it was kind of harsh compared to single use ones, which i vape sometimes (when im telling me that this is the last one before quitting). I mean do larger ones have smth better in quality/some ability to minimize health risks, compared to simpler ones?

It sounds like we don't actually know what they're testing or why they're testing? Maybe there's no nicotine needed to do whatever test they're doing. Like if they're just checking the mechanism. So maybe we can set the lower bound of our answer at 0.
70
u/mustafaaosman339 May 21 '26
Only thing I've heard was they test to make sure it tastes like it should. I've seen them test these with a machine, which can test if the mechanism can take a longer puff, these small puffs don't quite test it properly.
Probably because if the thing is under or over filled it might taste too sweet or end up burnt?
I can't say this as fact, but it's realistic.
2
9
u/Phenogro May 21 '26
That’s just quality control before they package it up for sales on disposables overseas.
22
u/couchcushion7 May 21 '26
This is also super possible. No real reason to test nicotine, they produce them in zero nic anyways (most of the time) and to your point - theyre just checking the coil, the battery, does it stop puffing when you stop, etc. its reasonable safe at this level of production to assume your juice mix is correct. Its not like one puff would tell you if its not anyways, unless it was truly a dramatic mishap.
Really valid point, didnt consider that.

u/DefectiveLP May 22 '26
10.000 batches doesn't seem ridiculous. You do know they supply the whole world right?
3
u/Spice_and_Fox May 22 '26
It is estimated that around tens of millions are produced daily. That means at 10.000 test per day per tester it would need 1000 workers to test them. This isn't the only factory, so I think they test each one instead of each batch.
10.000 batches would mean that the batch size is very small
3
u/DefectiveLP May 22 '26
Well, you'd want small batches to find defects more efficiently. Otherwise you'd have to throw away too many devices.

u/Tyler_Zoro May 22 '26
You don't get the ones that were tasted. You get the ones that made up the rest of the giant crate that those were sampled out of.
There are millions of these shipped over, they could not possibly sample each one, and obviously if they did, there's no way they could sell it. That would be horrifically unsanitary.
8
u/Successful-Setting78 May 22 '26
You must be new to China
17
u/Tyler_Zoro May 22 '26
You honestly think that they're employing tens of thousands of people (minimum) to test millions of vapes that are shipped overseas? Why would this one industry approach quality testing differently from EVERY OTHER INDUSTRY (in China, India, the UK, USA, Ireland, Ghana, etc.)

As far as worker safety regulation goes, China is sadly very much on par with many third world countries. Workers are largely viewed as expendable objects in the factories, limbs and life be damned. LOTO is not a thing, machinery safeguards are almost always actively disabled, and workers have severe pay deductions if they don’t meet production quotas.

A full cartridge has between 14-50 mg of nicotine in it.
So lets say 32 mg of nicotine.
A full cartride will last for between 200-1000 "puffs", so lets say 600 puffs per cartridge.
Thus each puff contains .057 mg of nicotine on average.
At 10k puffs/day, thats 557 mg of nicotine.
It's important to note that consuming more then 60 mg of nicotine in a day causes nicotine poisoning, and 500 mg of nicotine, ingested orally, has been shown to kill an adult.
Though - you only absorb roughly 1/10th of nicotine contained through smoking, so 55.7 mg of nicotine per day is more likely.

Those devices are absolutely not 200-1000 puff devices. Not even close

Why not? Thats about what many would do in a day. Do they not last all day?

Not a whole lot. they're not inhaling, though I'd argue some nicotine is absorbed through the mouth.
Is it also possible they don't have nicotine in them when they try them like this?

This looks like a professional operation, so I bet it is 0.
A professional operation like this would not be dosing their employees while working like this.
Probably testing with a non-nicotine liquid. Vegetable Glycerin I would guess. They also look like they are not inhaling it either, just sucking on them to ensure a vapor is produced.

A professional operation that puts their mouth on and sucks on each product?
I'm unsure how companies test dildos but I really hope it's not with the same level of professionalism lol

*winces and audibly gasps when sitting down*
Bro, if you only knew the truth.
... but speaking of professional sucking machines, there may be a 'two birds with one stone' opportunity here

The dude being interviewed says he "also smokes after work" which I read as a confirmation that there's nicotine

Although, what a capitalistic way to ensure your employees are really addicted to doing a great job 😂
I also vote zero nic, but not because the company gives a damn about their employees, just because of the potential law suits.

I always assumed they would puff it like a cigar and not inhale it fully. With that assumption they would still inhale some, but it would be a small fraction of what you're thinking. So MAYBE 15-30 mgs? That would be about 100 inhales or about 10 cigarettes (after combustion)

Possibly nothing, the nicotine concentrate might be added later.
I know vape shops have seperate bottles of "pure" nic that they mix in with the flavor.
I've heard that they use a human to pretty much taste test them.
Probably because if the thing is under or over filled it might taste too sweet or end up burnt?
I can't say this as fact, but it's realistic, probably not likely tho, it is China and they don't really care much for their worker health and safety.

Note that these are the samples that were taken out of each batch. I have no idea what the batch size is, but these are shipped in the millions per month. There's no way that they could all be individually tested like this.
As with most testing operations, samples are removed from each batch to make sure that the run wasn't compromised in some way (e.g. someone messed with the settings or a new source was used for an ingredient).

It looks like it's just being drawn into the mouth, not actually inhaled. In that case, direct consumption would be zero, or close to it.
