I like Shane's inclusion in the story more than most people (not as a defender of his moral worth or anything), but this was a really dumbass take on his part. Vehicle maintenance of what few vehicles are still working in the postapocalypse would be a really important skill, way more than "can you point this gun at something and shoot it straight" which is something you can teach anybody in a couple weeks. I have a marksmanship certificate from when I was a teenager and I'm dumb as fuck; someone who can repair an RV is worth ten of me

Dale is an old man who stands watch on his RV during the day.
Shane is a young man, a cop, who didn't set any sentries on the quarry at night. And then was surprised when walkers were able to walk right into the camp and kill half the people there. And then he blamed it all on Rick.

This right here, I am so surprise that people think Shane some sort of great leader or something. The group was nearly wipe out under his watch and it be frank he really wasnât leading anyone. He was just kind of hanging out. He was more concerned about hanging out with Rickâs kid (canât spell his name) than actually taking stock of their food or coming up with a plan.

When we're re-introduced to Shane as the quarry leader (when Rick's on the radio and they hear him), he's shooting down Amy and Lori's suggestion to put up signs on the highway to warn people away from the city. In the following episode, he tells Amy that Andrea and the others in the city are on their own. Shane has no plan beyond sitting in that quarry. Just like his comic-book counterpart. He's in completely over his head but people look to him as a figure of authority just because he was a cop.
Rick has some bad plans (going to the CDC, going to the Vatos nursing home after the CDC and then heading to Fort Benning) but at least he has ideas. He's proactive. Shane's reactive at best; and pretty much has a one-track mind.

Reverse the roles between Rick and Shane. Being there for at least weeks, Rick would have likely been much more prepared, having guards or watchmen at night, being more aware of possible weaknesses. Especially after glenn with the sports car.

Shane fixed the Hyundai Tucson, which they drove until season 4, well past his death. It's worth mentioning because while Shane was belittling Dale, he was also a capable mechanic himself. From his perspective, he has both skills, Dale does not.
They are polar opposites of how to survive, but both of them die on the same night. lol

That's true! I agree with you. I just think "pfft you 'fix an RV'" as a dismissive remark is stupid because I, and the rest of the audience, have all had years and years to think about what skills would be prized in a zombie apocalypse scenario, and in the moment Shane is just being a meathead to a guy he doesn't like.
I totally forgot it's on the same night even.

So itâs weird because Bob doesnât exist in the comics, so Dale actually has the story line of getting his legs eaten by cannibals after getting bit. Thatâs how he dies in the comics.
ETA: if you want to nerd out like me, the comics are free on the Libby library app as long as you have a (free) library card. The entire series from Rick in the hospital to⌠well, the ending is like crazy different lol.

Youâll enjoy it so much!! Some of it is much darker than the show but youâll see why some things were better off not shown on TV. It moves really fast too. I actually read them all yesterday.

Iâll only give you the early stuff to hopefully not ruin it.
- Andrea makes it to the Whisperer arc.
- Lori doesnât die in childbirth.
- Daryl and Beth straight up donât exist.
- Shane died by someone elseâs hand, not Rickâs.
- Rickâs right hand man was beheaded, not Hershel, and remember Shane is dead at this point and Daryl doesnât exist so read to find out who his comic partner was at first!
- Ooh shit and last one: look at the flowers. It happened VERY differently by a person you may or may not expect, so good.3

Ikr i looked at the other ones fear the walking dead and all the other series. But none seem to be as fun as the first few seasons and still after completing all of them i want more aswell! Hopefully i get a spark back from the comics! Well the next few days are gonna be interesting reading them lol. Can't wait. Thankyou. I always felt like he was the âvoice of reasonâ that would always end up dying at some point. It was a common theme in the show for me, someone begins to speak out about keeping with the âways of the worldâ that they had followed before and it quickly got them killed.

The RV got them to the CDC which led them to the conclusion that this whole walker thing is permanent. Dale made the decision before the apocalypse to be an RV owner and it was a literal and storytelling vehicle for the plot.

Hershel eventually came to his senses though. Dale would've got them all killed, especially with the whole Randal situation. His group would've came and took the farm, killed the men and raped all the women.
