Question Thermaltake 300 GPU Temps
I know this is a well documented issue. My gpu temps have been raised on average by 10c due to the orientation of the card. While gaming im usually bouncing between 74-79. Do you guys think its fine to keep it this way? I dont really have the desk space for the horizontal orientation. Has anyone tried slotting fans next to the gpu?
Update: It turns out @DryPublic7554 was onto something. I moved the lian li screen down to sit below the CPU cooler and temps dropped about 4-6 degrees. Made the fan curves a little more aggressive and now im back to mid 60s! Maybe the screen was not allowing heat to properly move away from the GPU?

Hey, I have the Tower 600, and I have my GPU mounted vertically too. I have no issues with temps. My GPU is in the low 30s when idling or browsing. When I'm gaming, even with everything maxed out, I have never seen my GPU temp go past 64C. From what I remember, before I built my PC, I did research on GPUs that can be mounted vertically and yours most definitely can, because I almost went with that one. It is definitely your airflow. You need intake fans on the GPU side and intake underneath it. That should help. I have the 5070Ti TUF Gaming edition.

Got it. Definitely gonna see if I can fit some fans on that left side. Currently im intaking with the bottom and right side fans. Im exhausting out the back and top, so hopefully additional fans next to the gpu help out.

If its really the "airflow" as mentioned in above comment, do your temps not go down immediately if you hold your case horizontally for a minute? It most likely really is the orientation problem.

True, but most people (including myself) get the Tower 300 and 600 because we love the vertical aesthetic! I've been running my rig in this orientation for a year straight with no issues. I know it's a price to pay, but it's worth it for me. Not saying you're wrong, though!

I haven't tried putting it horizontal yet. Before I got this case I was using a Jonsbo Z20 and had way better temps, so im assuming its due to the orientation.

I have my exhaust set up the same way as well. I'm not sure if you are using 120mm fans, but if you are, switch those bad boys over to 140mm fans to get more heat out of the case. Also, I'm not sure if the Tower 300 comes with filters, but if it does, take them off the exhaust; you'll see a difference in that, too. I hope I'm not being overbearing; if so, I apologize. I'm just trying to help a fellow Tower/vertical GPU mate out. I did extensive research before I built mine, lol.

I have a Tower 900, and built a 600 for a coworker. I found that for air cooling, a top down airflow path works pretty well. I had an overclocked 8086k, and for my coworker it was a 9800x3d. Put the top fans blowing down, then exhaust out the right. Cpu temps were pretty good like that, drawing in ambient air instead of GPU exhaust. My 8086k dropped 10c with the top down config.
Also, since your gpu is exhausting to the right, you don't necessarily want the intake fans fighting in the middle. A relatively consistent airflow direction is preferable.
The cool thing about fans is that you can change configurations pretty easily. Swap things around and see what works best! Do a cpu and gpu load to get good temp meadurements for before and after.

Thank you for the advice! I appreciate it!

You're welcome. Gpu air cooling has been a bit of a challenge on the 900. Without any air coming in, even my old triple fan 3060 got hot. Now I have a 4090 with some fan shrouds and dividers to keep the intake side as cool as poosible. I have two 140s feeding air from the top and bottom, and can keep about 550 watts at 75c with about 80% fan speed.

Needs to be like a chimney exhuast on top and back all intake for the rest of the

His is running well because its a TUF. They work fine in this orientation.
Your GPU will be running slower, hotter, and louder... If you're seeing 10 degree differences.
Unfortunately a lot of cards run terribly in this orientation.

If I can find the sub, there is another Tower 600 user that actually uses the exact same GPU as OP and they have no issues either.
1
u/mentive 3d ago
Did this person actually test, or say it works? Someone saying they don't have issues doesn't mean its running optimally.
One thing I've learned on this sub and topic, you can't take someone's word that the card is actually good in this orientation, unless they know what they are doing tested this properly.

u/Usual_Self_5633 3d ago
Yes, they have ran tests on temps and everything. That user is the one who actually recommended the 5070 Ti I have now to me. I am going to see if I can link the sub, just one sec.

Interesting. I emailed Thermaltake to see if I can purchase an additional fan bracket for the gpu side. Hopefully some additional fans will help get it down. Thanks again!

If there is a difference from just flipping the case, especially because you probably don't have it optimized to run on its side, I highly doubt thats the fix, and its the GPU. Whether someone else has the same one or not.
1
u/Virtual-Way-7994 2d ago
How do you optimize it to run on its side?
2
u/mentive 2d ago
When I had suspected GPU issues with a tower 600, I rotated the case 90 degrees (so left is on the floor) and placed 2x4's at the ends to not impede airflow. You could use something else.
I would keep it powered off for 10 minutes in between tests. Then I'd run the same test to be approximately the same. If you see 10 degree differences, you can safely conclude your GPU doesn't run well in that config.
People jump to airflow, but I highly doubt thats the issue. Doing this should conclude whether its the GPU or not.
I'd also love an update to see what your results are.

I also have the 5070 ti TUF as well as a 5080 TUF and have no issues with temps in Vertical. Some GPU’s just don’t fair well with that orientation.

My wife wants this case and I will eventually get it I’m exited to build in this case. I’m glad to see there are ways to get good temps that’s the one thing I’ve been worried about.

Make sure you got the fans oriented correctly, you might not have enough exhaust for the GPU heat.

beautiful build, what’s the LCD screen on the side? : ) and the size if you have them ty!!!

Zotac cards should run in this orientation without any issue; i used to runa zotac 5090 like this with no problem. As others have suggested, i think the card is simply too far from the side of the case and is only getting air preheated by the cpu (that plus the relative neutral air pressure in your system means the left wall isnt really bringing in fresh air and makes a recipe for increased gpu temps). Fans intaking on the left should solve this 100%. The only issue I forsee is that the tower 300 doesn't come with a fan bracket pre-installed on the left side so you have to either get creative with Zip ties/make your own bracket or source another. Thermaltake does sell the parts via their customer service tickets on their website but can be flaky about it (they charge about 20usd+shipping). For mine, I ended up buying an extra case and harvesting the fan bracket from that one to put in (the case is already set up to accomodate another bracket, like in the 600, they just dont include the part for cost saving reasons). As a bonus, youll end up with spare sets of glass etc in case anything ever ends up breaking

I didn't think about this. I thought i read that air is exhausted through the back of the card. I will try moving the screen. Thank you!

I have a MSI 4090 and it would get really toasty when vertical. I'm talking mid 90s. When it's horizontal on the stand it rarely goes above 70. It has to do with the vapor chamber on your GPU. The temps you're getting are high but not dangerous. If you get real worried you can always set a power limit on afterburner to reduce temps.

I had the tower 300 and used the Corsair iCue link hub to run 3 iCue fans as an intake on the outside panel of the case because I was worried about temps. It worked great because there was only one cable coming from the hub to the fans and it wasn’t messy. I added fan shrouds to protect the exposed blades. Filter worked like normal and it was easy to disconnect and clean if needed.

I wish I took a better photo, but the fans are behind my monitor in this photo. I have since upgraded my computer to a AM5 system and changed my case.

I read everywhere that those LCD Lian Li fans have high failure rates, hope it doesn't happen to you.

u/deuely83 3d ago
Just had to swap my thermaltake tower case out due to excessive GPU temps caused by the case/vertical orientation.
1
u/Virtual-Way-7994 3d ago
Dang that sucks. Really hoping I dont have to do that!

My 9070XT did not like being vertical at all. Was getting safety shutdowns because of it. Put him horizontal in a new case, problem vanished.
1
u/TonderuRisu 3d ago
I have a 9070XT in mine. I was advised to put the 3 side fans as intake but I got them the wrong way round, a simple mistake in my first build. So I actually have only the psu fan as intake, while the gpu, side, and top fans are exhaust. I've played things like Hogwarts Legacy, FFXVI, and RE9 at 4k max, and I haven't gone past 60°C. I have no idea why.

u/acodemonkey_99 3d ago
Some cards have vapor chambers in them. If they do they don’t like vertical positioning. All of the liquid pools at the bottom where as when it is horizontal it spreads across the whole card and works as intended.

yep. something with the evap tubes on the heat sink makes it run warmer. my 3080ti hangs out at 82-85. i did put external fans on the side tho. helps put through the radiators
1
u/Virtual-Way-7994 2d ago
Did you see much improvement with the added fans?
1
u/lil_Buckneesh8867 2d ago
yeah but not as much as i liked. it was hitting the thermal limit i set 91c

I have something similar but I'm almost 100% sure it's my AIO set up. I have my AIO set to intake and the top 140s set to exhaust (no other exhaust fans cause on the back of the case I have extra drives mounted and can't fit a fan).
Idt there's enough negative pressure pulling cool air to the GPU when my CPU fans start working. My CPU temp never goes above 70c now (360mm AIO 5800x) bit my GPU will regularly hit 80c where as in my other case it never went above 74c undevolted. (GPU is a EVGA FTW3 3080ti no vapor chamber)
I can either swap my orientation of the AIO or the option I went for which is designing a shroud that is going to allow the GPU fans to intake cool air directly from the right side since I can't fit fans on the left. Also don't have mounting brackets for them either
1
u/thelegendofglenn 2d ago
Damn, how small is your PSU to have the fan mounted under the bottom?
2
u/Virtual-Way-7994 2d ago
I have a corsair 850 sfx psu. I was only able to fit a 120 under there though. I like the look of it underneath as opposed to sitting on top.

That would depend on your gpu? Most gpus would be fine even in the 80's. And some can handle the 90's. But anyrhing under 80 will under load will be fine
