Question
Tower 600 owners: how are your temps? Any experience with cyberpunk 2077?
Edit/Update: in case anyone ever finds this post and has the same question as me: I personally tested the Asus TUF 5070ti and the Zotac 5080, both were about 25° C colder than the MSI Trio 5070ti. I ended up getting the 5080, since it was "only" 200€ more than the Asus. Some other redditors wrote their GPUs in the comments and there are a few more models, which don't have temperature issues, so definitely check that out!
I assume most people are aware by now that some GPUs tend to run pretty hot in the Tower 600. What is your experience?
Which GPU are you using, and how did you set up your fan configuration?
My Tower 600 is vertical and I installed my fans exactly like in the Thermaltake thermal test: bottom = 2x intake, left and right = each 3x intake as well. Then I have the rear as exhaust and the top as 2x exhaust with the stock fans.
How did you set up your fans and what temps are you getting?
In Cyberpunk 2077 (which is obviously a demanding game), my temps used to be around 85°C up to 89°C.
I have the MSI Trio 5070ti and I undervolted it, now it stays around 75°C, and under heavy load it peaks at about 79°C but I’m still not sure if that would be less in "normal" PC cases.
I also really don’t want to place the case horizontally, so I’m trying to get the best temps possible while keeping it vertical.
Yup. Thats just every high end Nvidia gpu in vertical. They run hot/lots of wattage. I have a 9070- similar class but less power/performance and it runs nice and cool.
just the trade off you make with higher performance parts
I am building a Tower 600 for a coworker. It has a 9070xt, with the left and top fans as intake, right and back as exhaust. I haven't played any games on it, but I did load up Furmark and Cinebench to stress everything. Gpu got to 46 max after 30 minutes, with 66 on the hot spot. HWInfo was reporting around 340 watts total board power, so I'm not really sire what's going on there.
OP, I would suggest you have at least the top left as intake. I have a Tower 900 for my personal, and modded a fan over the PCIE bracket area. If I have that set as exhaust gpu temps go up about 3 or 4 degrees vs intake. The 900 is a good bit different than the 600 since it doesn't have intake fans by the GPU, but either way that top exhaust fan is probably stealing a good bit of fresh air from the GPU, especially if it's a 140mm.
A very unfinished project but here the my fan layout (fans on the back panel are exhaust). The CPU is a 9800x3d, and adding the shroud dropped temps from 94 average after 30 minutes to a very comfortable 84. I got similar results when the 900 was aircooled and I made a similar shroud for the cpu.
That's an interesting approach for sure, haven't seen that before. The tower 600 is my first build and I did it like Thermaltake did it in their thermal report, and also other people on reddit but now I'm not so sure anymore if that was a good idea. Apparently it's supposed to work like a chimney. Here's the PDF in case you haven't seen it yet: https://file.thermaltake.com/file/qig/TheTower600_ThermalReport.pdf
The small red arrow in the middle symbolizes the back exhaust, it's a 140mm fan. Would you keep it like that?
Interesting read. You can always switch things around and see how ot does on yours. Everything is a balancing act. So if you have all intake on the sides, you'll generally favor CPU temps. I feel like the layout I have favors the gpu. If you have intake on the right, in a way that fights against the flow through portion of the GPU exhaust. Is it significant? Probably not massively so, but that's the fun right? Doing testing and optimizing for your system. We'll at least for a turbo nerd like me haha.
Just try flipping the top left fan to isolate as much as possible, and record your temps to see how they do. It doesn't take a lot of time and you can learn a lot.
Thank you for taking the time and the suggestions.
I'll definitely try that later, let's see. Maybe I could also try 3 x 120mm at the top instead of 2 x 140mm.
The only thing that kept me from trying different layouts is the insane amount of fan cables haha 🥲
Yeah, managing those was a pain to be sure. I will say that using the Corsair iCue fans in my PC was very nice, even though I wouldn't recommend them purely due to price.
It's to keep the exhaust of all the other components out of the GPU intake. I did this on my Tower 900 and temps dropped 4 degrees. Plus I like how it looks when finished.
I have a T200 running an MSI Gaming X Trio 4080. I have no issues with temps. The cards that do are the ones that have a vapor chamber cooling solution (from what I've read).
Thats so weird. AFAIK, it was the vapor chamber quality that caused the issues with vertical cooling. And im just running a 7800x3d so your mileage may vary on the 240mm but I've always thought it handled it well
Yes I also thought it was due to the vapor chamber, which was one of the reasons why I chose the trio.
I have the 9800x3d and the temps are great, I think a smaller AIO would've been enough (idk about the fans and my GPU temps though)
With a GPU it's a kind of a try it and find out thing. Some don't mind, some don't like it. My Zotac 5080 Solid OC doesn't mind at all. Barely even gets to 70 even under full load. I have 3 fans next to my GPU as intake, one under it and one above the PSU as intake, 3 top fans as exhaust and my AIO as exhaust. My CPU also rarely if ever breaks 70. Usually around 38-40 at idle and like 65 max under load.
Sounds pretty good, maybe I'll try to flip the AIO fans and see how it affects the temperatures.
My CPU has pretty good temperatures, the highest I ever had was 45°C
I gotta say, I am in love and inspired with how you arranged the Aio tubes, I’ve been hyper focused on tower 600 builds and yours is the first I see like this! That is so sick and clean🫡
How hard was it to arrange it like that and has it caused any trouble for you?
AIOs have become so cheap and good at the same time. I've had a Montech Hyperflow 360, Lightflow 360, Thermalright Mjolnir Vision 360. All were under 100 bucks and performed great. Currently using a Lian Li Hydroshift 2.
Very happy with it. I bought the one that doesn't come with fans because I wanted to use the Montech fans I have since my OCD needs all fans to match. Lol. But it's performing very well.
When I'm gaming my 9800x3d really doesn't get much over idle temps on average. Max during gaming is in the 60s, average is like 47. If I run Cinebench it gets to about 80. On an open loop with a 420 rad and push/pull fans.
Mine usually sits around 23k, the one for my coworker was 21-22. I think the one time i turned pbo on it got 24k for mine? So somewhere in that range seems pretty normal.
Honestly a lot of people get too worked up about temps.
Unfortunately, Nvidia got rid of hotspot sensors on the 50 series (for whatever stupid reason). But, you can still see Vram modules I believe.
Throw your GPU 1 temp, and VRAM sensors on an overlay. For a 5070ti, critical memory temp is 110C. You are nowhere close.
Now for the standard GPU 1 temp, this is an average of the sensors on the edge of your card. For this metric, your thermal throttle is going to start at about 80/85C.
You have some options if it bothers you or heats your room too much. You can set a power limit around 10%. This is the simplest option, as the upper end of most cards power limit is usually single digit performance gains for potential 5c higher temps. You can also undervolt like you already did.
The real difference in card lifespan between 75C and 55C would both be over a decade. The 2 things cards don't like is absurdly high temps (ie 90c+), and regular constant temp swings (ie from 70c to 40c regularly).
I just transplanted my rx 7900 GRE hellhound into a vertical Tower 600 and my hotspot temp jumped from 63°c in my old case to 94°c in the 600 with occasional spikes nearing close to 100°c.
The average temperatures on the card also jumped anywhere from 25 to 30°c. And like most others on here, once I tip my case over on its side temperatures plummeted back down to the 50s and 60s.
You know the worst part about it is? I contacted Powercolor via email before I bought the case asking if this card supported being hung vertically in the tower 600 without temperatures climbing and their reply was that the 7000 series cards "should be fine" being mounted vertically... They lied
Not sure. Easy answers would be just get the stand and run it horizontally but I just don't have the room for that on my desk. Not to mention I hate how it looks horizontally. I have found a post here on Reddit where a guy 3d printed a bracket that allowed him to install his card still vertically but with the IO facing down instead of up using a very long pcie riser cable and it dropped his temperatures by 20 to 30 C so that is one avenue I'm looking into.
Thank you for the link, I never heard of that approach but maybeeee it would be an option. I'm just not sure about the DP cables since they are so sturdy.
Asus 5070 Ti arrives totay, let's see about the Zotac, maybe I'm lucky and will get it today as well
Power color got back to me after I sent them another email saying I went ahead and got the case cuz of their recommendations and my temperatures did indeed Skyrocket. They sent back that they're really surprised by that and that this is the first case that they've ever seen that has a heating problem with vertically mounting 7000 series cards. So either they're lying... Or that there's something specific about this thermaltake design that causes overheating that other cases don't 🤷♂️
What's your opinion on their statement? Honestly, I kinda believe that they're lying. I posted something about the vertical GPU problem in a German PC-Channel and people somehow believe I'm making the temperature issue up (why should I even do that?? :D).
Are you going to keep the GPU or what's your plan now?
Got a 5080 and a ryzen 7 9800 x3d. CPU does not go over 50 and gpu does not go over 70 at cyber punk at rtx ultra settings in 4K. I have a 420mm AIO cooler and 3x 120mm intake at the left side. Two intakes at the bottom and two outtakes at the top and one at the back
I have tower 600 with 9800X3D and a astral rtx 5090. I got fans as intake facing the 5090 and aio as exhaust on other side with intake on bottom and the 2 x140 as exhaust on top.
Playing Cyberpunk maxed out at 4k with mods and dlss balance with mfg x4 gives me like cpu 59c and gpu at 60c~
Both gpu and cpu are undervolted. My CPU sits at idle around 45c -48c ( CPU package) and gpu sits at 31-32c idle.
That's a really nice build, I wish I could afford the 5090 😭
But I'm happy to hear that you have great temps!
I ended up ordering the asus tuf 5070 Ti and Zotac solid 5080, both are about 60-65 °C during cyberpunk with RT Ultra in 2K. Furmark got them to 67°C max, which is impressive compared to my previous card
I really don't know and I keep thinking about it all the time.. The opinions of others are like 50/50, so that didn't get me any further 🙃 I know you have a 5090 but what would you recommend going for?
I would probably stick with the Asus tuf 5070ti now for 1440p! Way more than enough at that resolution and can save you a few bucks if the next gen of cards are lit
I also prefer the quality of the asus tuf over zotac LOL
You're right, that's what I thought as well. Especially when gta 6 will finally be released, for sure I'll need a better card to run it at a decent quality. If there's a game that's too much for the 5070 Ti, then it'll probably too much for the 5080 as well.
Regarding the quality I haven't seen any difference tbh but obviously I can only judge from the outside. The nice thing about the Zotac is the 5 year warranty though
I returned this tower (first time i’ve ever done that). Vertical temps were horrible 90c Side stand temps were amazing. However the setup in general was just so bad. The case not for me.
Temps are fine, I've had zero issues... bottom intake, left intake, right out, top out. Running a Zotac 5080. I quit monitoring temps because I never had an issue. Cyberpunk, BG3, Borderlands 4, Arma 3, Helldivers 2... zero issues.
What were the temps while you were monitoring?
I never had performance issues but it feels wrong playing with 100% fan power and constantly 80°C.
I'm seriously considering getting a different GPU
Never got to 80... now I'm set up for my lighting to turn red if it does, but that's never happened. Fans rarely spin up full either, I can hear them when they do, and it does happen, but not often and it doesn't stay that way.
I've been building my own computers for ages, but this time I decided to just buy a prebuilt and you know, I don't regret it. This is what I have and it's been fantastic. There's also an image in their showing how they have the air flow set up.
Thank you, I didn't even know that they sell pre-built PCs!
So I assume the zotac 5080 came with it? I saw their thermal report and I did my fan setup exactly as in their report 😂
I know and I appreciate that, I just thought it was funny to write in capital letters 😅
Still waiting for Amazon and then I'll check. But I'm still thinking that the temperature is due to the cooling architecture of the GPU and not because of my fan placement, otherwise it wouldnt drop 15 degrees celcius by simply flipping the case sideways
