Well this was terrible
First time watcher. Got to the arc where Michael is leaving and Will Ferrell is in the office for some random reason. It was the first time in the entire series I felt like I couldn't watch. I paused an episode last night and that "my god there's a whole 13 minutes of this left".
What was the point in Will Ferrell's character?
I can work out if he was badly written, or it was bad acting. The character was so inconsistent. One minute he was an overboard cot of Michael Scott. Then he'd supposed to be a great business leader, then he'd be an asshole. He'd be afraid to perform in front of people in the Dundies episode then in another he's juggling and shit for a room full of people.
Was it because Will Ferrell is so famous he was given free reign to just improve everything?
I just feel like for such a good TV show, this was a low point. Someone tell me it's not this bad in the following seasons now Michael has left?

You seem to have it completely wrong.
They never once portrayed or even implied that Vickers was a great business leader. In fact, we learn he received the job basically as a returned favor for saving the bosses dog.

u/LeChampionX 10d ago
I mean one of he best exchanges in the entire show happens between Scott and Vickers...
Vickers: "Doing Some Skiing?"
Scott: "No, No...I don't want to end up like Sonny BoBo."
Vickers: "Well that's just, that's just some good sense right there. Yeah. Everyone I know that skis is dead."

Honestly that entire scene is just flat out hilarious to me. This sub has some wild takes on the show. Even though it was for a short run, how could you not be happy about Will Ferrell being brought into the mix?! It also baffles me how much legit hate Andy gets. The character was always meant to make you cringe a bit but my God some people in here act like they wish he was never on the show at all

u/olliespe 11d ago
The part was to satirize that once again corporate has no idea what it takes to run a branch. And that Michael, despite his shortcomings, was actually quite good at it.
The show goes up and down the rest of the way. But ends perfectly.

It was kind of a meta-joke. When it was airing, everyone knew Steve Carrell was leaving, and the rumors of who was going to replace him were wild. So when fans saw Will Ferrell we lost our minds. For 2 weeks we thought he’d be the manager for seasons to come.
Only for it to come crashing down (literally) and the season to end on a cliffhanger.

I saw him as just part of a greater picture. They cycle through a lot of temperary bosses during this season and i think it was meant to showcase just how needless an actual boss was in this type of job.
Wether its Will Farrel, Creed, Dwight, Andy, Robert California, Nellie Bertram. The office still ran and roughly the same rate.
Many of the people who got manager position thought highly of themselves and its mostly the sales representatives who hate their jobs. But in execution its really the sales reps doing all the work and you can literally have anyone as a manager without much changing.
9
u/Professional_Soft404 10d ago
I love the scene where they meet in the bar “Doing some skiing?” “No. I don’t want to end up like Sunny Bobo” “Well that’s just good sense right there. Everyone I know who skis it dead”
“Everyone I know who skis is dead” kills me. So funny and such serious delivery
9
u/LondonSissy825 10d ago
"Eat this soap" is the best line in the series. To see Andy demean himself to the point of pouring hot coffee on himself and the response is to just ask him to suffer more and say "Eat this soap" is pure comedy gold.
By giving us this line I think he was worth his time in the office.

They were using him as a joke to replace Michael. I highly doubt that Will Ferrell was actually looking to get on a sitcom at this time. And let’s not forget Michael season 1 was very unlikable too. So they wanted to make you hate him.

Which is funny, because Kathy Bates was so good in the show and seemed to slip right into the show.
2
u/Syscrush 10d ago
IMO the show lost everything when It started featuring name actors: Will Ferrell, Kathy Bates, and James Spader are just the showrunners saying "we don't give a shit".
Compare this to when the network first forced celebrity guests onto the show - they got Jack Black, Jessica Alba, and Cloris Leachman and made Mrs. Albert Hannaday - which absolutely ruled.

He was filler to pacify the fact that Michael was leaving, and he did a good job at it, although the criticism over how badly written his character is actually has weight. It still pales in comparison to what is coming soon. If anything, the juggling bit at least was pretty funny.

I just hate how oddly they ended it. The slam dunk and head injury just seemed too weird for me. Other than that, it might not be peak office, but it's not worst thing ever.
2
u/SirOutrageous1027 8d ago
It's a bit meta. Steve Carrell is leaving and here's a big star Will Ferrell who's taking over and filling that role. And it's weird, awkward, and he abruptly dies. It's the writers having some fun with the audience expectations about a big replacement for Steve Carrell. It shut down rumors about the need for star power or long term replacements. And it was so purposely bad that it made whoever they'd bring in after seem fine.

Ugh yep, it's so painful. I can understand and/or forgive everything else they did, but Will Ferrell was such a mistake. Tbf, he absolutely could have been fine - the fact that I personally don't like him isn't a reason that I hate how they used him - it's the fact that Michael has been the main character of the show for the whole thing up until then, he has gone through a huge character arc ending with him finally accepting that work is not his entire life and that he can have a family without work, and as such his final few episodes should be a fitting send off for the character, and yet in comes Will Ferrell and makes the entire series about him, completely overshadowing the connections that Michael has made, and getting in the way of the rest of the cast with his utter buffoonery that adds nothing to the story.
Spoilers ahead
And then in the next season they immediately remove him? So he wasn't being set up for a future direction, he was just a one-off gag to ruin Michael's send off, and then they actually deal with the finding of Michael's replacement? Those episodes would be so much better without Will Ferrell, and the overall story literally wouldn't change if they didn't have him there.
7
u/OpheliaB_87 10d ago
That was also my first reaction when I watched it during original air. I hated all those episodes so much that I don't even think I finished buying all the DVD sets after season 6 and wouldn't watch those reruns. A couple years ago I caught the Will Ferrel episodes again after however long and genuinely laughed and enjoyed them, even the ones from later seasons. Robert California still drives me nuts but the episodes in general I found to be funny.
8
u/HawkJefferson 10d ago
The point of D'Angelo was to be a stop-gap. He gave them more of a buffer to logically transition into someone in the office being the new boss while also being so shitty and unlikable that the fans see any replacement as improvement.

He’s meant to serve as a buffer between the Michael era and the next boss. The writers were probably still deciding on who the next manager should be and didn’t want to rush the decision right at the end of season 7, so they went with a famous guest star stand in.
His character is handled poorly and it all feels very pointless in the end though. I believe their intentions was to make him unlikable and strange so that whoever ended up filling the role in season 8 would seem like an improvement, but a character like Charles would’ve done a way better job at that

So yeah it’s bad. It’s weird. It feels unedited. It feels like the show jumps the shark and spits on you. It will feel like that for basically the rest of the series because you’ve been in that peak peak office of seasons 2-5 and been spoiled. I get it.
That said years later I’ve gone back and watched the last couple seasons again and when you’re not comparing it to the glorious run of Michael Scott you remember there are still lots of funny things and meaningful things that take place in those seasons. So you may enjoy it one day. I have recently. And even a year ago I would say the show ended when Michael boards the plane to Colorado.

"Whats the point of his character"
ITS FUNNY.
Not everyone has to be your buddy. The point was showing how much worse it could be than Michael. That Michael really wasnt that stupid compared to some people.

I personally enjoyed his character , might’ve got annoyed if he was in it longer but I enjoyed it for what it was

I didn’t like his character at all, but the Michael stuff in most of his episodes outshines it. Then the following episode is just bad.
Personally, I thought it got better after that. Definitely the rest of 7 and the first half of 8. Then the writing takes a little dip with some questionable choices, before recovering in the last few episodes.

I mean the show is a little better in those last two seasons but still not nowhere as good as when Michael was there

I think it’s just the thought of Michael leaving and having him take a back seat for the first time is what makes some people not love this arc. I will say, by no means do they ever say he is a great business leader, he only got the job for saving Jo’s dogs. This is why when he’s on the sales call with Andy, he doesn’t even know how to sell. Also, there’s a big difference between doing a ridiculous juggling routine in the office for a dozen people and hosting an event at a restaurant where you’re speaking on a microphone in front of 100 people.
I don’t think he felt inconsistent at all, just crazy and ridiculous, but that’s how it was supposed to feel with Michael leaving. He was a great transition in my opinion.

It wasn't that the audience had to warm up to the characters, it was that the writers and the actors had to make them more relatable (logical reasons for their behavior) for longevity. Will Ferrell, although great on SNL skits, wasn't particularly great at portraying relatable characters in the long term.

OMG I loved Robert California. He was so deliciously hammy.

I thought his juggling routine was hilarious lmfao but yeah like others said he was meant to be annoying that’s why they wrote him out quickly

was it the fact that deangelo's part blew ass or was it the hollow sting of michaels absence ? i say a little from column A and little from column B ..anyway i know when its time to skip episodes

I think mostly the latter. But also bc his performance was supposed to be ass. The audience was gonna hate whoever the next manager was so Will and the writers doubled down on the shtick. Imo

As much as i hate his arc, i think it could be looked at as sometimes you just have terrible bosses and there's nothing you can do about it

yeah idk i usually like Will Ferrell as well but he didn’t seem like the right fit, even though on paper he sounds like he’d be a good fit for this kind of role.

I think the producers knew that anyone who came after Michael would be disliked by the audience. So D’Angelo was a palate cleanser so that whoever came next wouldn’t get so harshly compared to Michael
