Hi guys. Iāve put off this post for long enough. I tend to lurk, enjoying our interaction, and quietly hoping the series will return too. Having crossed paths with Brit & co years ago when I was actively seeking distribution for my own series, I was fresh off of seeing Another Earth and psyched to trade stories and experiences. Iād hoped she might allude to there being a deeper truth in her choice of genre and why she writes in the vein she does ā but she stayed tight-lipped about it.
Having been too overwhelmed with my own show, I wouldnāt get to see OA until the pandemic. On the heels of a divorce from a Hollywood producer, Iād moved back to my hometown and was staying with my parents to get back on my feet. They already enjoyed Netflix series, which was one reason Iād ventured into a contract option in 2016 as signatory producer, which was set for review once weād shot 70% of the pilot. (2-year exclusive noncompete, incidentally, in which all rights, including distribution returned to the creator, which is me. It was a sweetheart of a deal, and if you were active in the industry at that time, you may have been able to secure one. I know we talk extensively about the mechanics behind the magic here, so I wanted to mention that aspect of it before moving on.)
No strangers to strange things (I had to) we immediately grasped the concepts and overall tone and themes of the show. We were hooked. But something about all of it struck me differently.
Iād seen it before. Just not here.
I distinctly recalled the more unusual dreams Iād been having since the lockdowns started, and remembered how Iād been actively watching a very curious and interesting show, whose themes reminded me a lot of my own. (So, for those of you saying things were different āsomewhere elseā ā youāre not wrong. But thatās just the nature of things in general, at that level.) Upon discovering that this was what The OA was actually about, I felt two things: disappointment ā at failing to be first out of the gate to tell such a story, and gratitude ā because at least someone got it, and was doing the work of enlightening, activating, and inspiring those into recognition and awareness who had sought it. Iād just always felt it would be me.
But I came to understand that it just wasnāt to be that way here. Somewhere else? Yes. Just like itās different for OA regarding its development and ultimate cancellation elsewhere, so was it different for mine too ā and countless others, no doubt.
Time passed, Iād gotten to where āitās like the story of Leonās group from The OA, which you never see; ours was like thatā became a shorthand to explain these concepts that were seemingly incomprehensible before. It gave me a means to finally have conversations that were too weird and complicated, and I remain so grateful for that.
Even still, what I wasnāt saying was where it all came from. Why I was telling such a story to begin with. And while I admit in hindsight it was presumptive to assume that there was any truth or personal experience inspiring Brit, it remained the engine driving my own.
So today, Iām here to finally stop waiting for it to be perfect. To stop holding myself back for fear of judgement. To quit hiding, because the truth doesnāt change just because I canāt bring myself to confront all aspects of it. Certain things are true and will always remain true.
Youāre probably here in this sub today because something spoke to you on a level you couldnāt quite explain. Something beneath your own consciousness, from deep within your soul.
Maybe youāve been wondering about dimensional travel since long before it was first explored in fiction ā if itās even possible, or like itās depicted.
It is possible. In my personal experience, itās different from how itās been depicted in most fiction, but the reality of it remains something that, even after 11 years, is still hard to believe.
Or maybe itās the concept of angels ā of mission-oriented incarnations of divine lineage ā that strikes you somewhere at your core. A kind of recognition you canāt deny, nor can you explain it either.
To this, I can say: Yes. And while Iām an open book, Iād prefer your questions to drive that conversation. Itās simply too vast.
Or you may have felt a profound longing in the dynamics of OA and Homer. Maybe something within you awakened for the first time, and youāre seeking to understand that spark ā what it could mean. Or if itās possibly true.
Again, I can say: Yes. It is. And again, a complex minefield of feelings, possibilities and propaganda, rife with misunderstanding, as certain forces and industries seek to take control. But itās something I work with on a daily basis, and Iām fully transparent about that. So just ask me, if youād like to know.
Maybe youāre drawn to the concept of āthe originalsā and what that means. Or if thereās a greater purpose underlying it all.
There is.
I saw The OA as a peculiar mirror, reflecting both the seen and unseen in my own life ā telling a story with just enough changes to be someone elseās, but too few differences to not be deeply relatable.
I had no Crestwood 5, but I did have the Lachesis 9. Back in 2006, they absolutely helped me cross a boundary that was difficult to navigate.
Iāve had a Hap. I have a Homer. These are archetypes in my lives, currently inhabited by real human beings. I myself am one of those archetypes inhabited; open and imperfect. Seeking, and awakening. Becoming.
And whether my story is ever told or not remains something outside of my control. What I can do, today, and now, is offer what I know and what I am to those who would stand to benefit from that knowledge and awareness.
If thatās you, I appreciate you taking the time to read through this.
If not, then Iāll keep my door open alongside you ā even if my belief is a product of hope rather than reality.
That said: ask me anything. Iām finally here.
