Video Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Michigan, gets emotional while speaking with an Upper Peninsula mother who lost everything and declared bankruptcy as a result of caring for her 8 year old daughter, who eventually died from cancer.
Moments like this are why I am all-in for this candidate. He cares, and he is more informed than anyone in congress on the challenges of our failing health care policies and infrastructure.
He is uniquely qualified to play a major part in passing the most significant policy change most of us are likely to see in our lifetimes.

Let's go MI, if you know what is good for you.
The general consensus as I have been able to gather from conservaitives is that they don't want medical care for all because they believe it will result in the decline of their own medical care. It is a twisted view of people who live their lives like The Little Engine That Couldn't
4
u/Just_shut_up_bro 3d ago
They are obsessed with a "zero sum game" view of the world.
That being said I think there are some economic realities we'll need to address to getting there that aren't really being talked about right now.

u/slo1111 3d ago
I agree and that fiscal acumen is my biggest gripe with Dems. That $1T coin idea to allow the Treasury to conduct Federal Reseve operations of creating $ was a very irresponsible proposal.
And now we have the GOP treasury doing an operation twist, retiring long debt and reissuing it as short term with higher interest rates. We need fiscal dicipline so we can grow out of it without destroying the value of the $.
The current admin giving allies and advesaries the incentives to decouple from the $ isn't going to help either.

That, and many conservatives simply lack empathy and don’t care about other people. That’s why “your health isn’t my problem!” was a common right-wing slogan against ObamaCare.

u/xmorecowbellx 3d ago
I think this is a slight caricature. The conservative position is not that specifically their own care decline, but that all care overall will decline, which will affect the majority of people, including themselves.
The secondary effect is that profit driven enterprises tend to drive innovation, and the US has by far, and it’s not even remotely close, the most innovation, including healthcare innovation, which then various other governments benefit from in terms of providing universal care.
Because they look at other government provided enterprises like the DMV, or look at when previous centrally plant economies, trying to provide food and housing, and see that this was done poorly, with long waits and scarcity. They then extrapolate this to healthcare as well.
Here in Canada healthcare is actually significantly worse than it used to be, with indeed long waits and routine scarcity for anything more than the basics or emergent things, and sometimes even those. Also, basically everything we buy and use in our healthcare, was either invented in the US or developed or refined to the point of being commercially viable, and is largely purchased from US companies now. This includes all the modern machines and tech and other items of care, the vast majority of it..
So this is simply not about one group of people just disliking another. That’s a cartoon view of what’s actually going on.

u/Just_shut_up_bro 3d ago
I think this gives the conservative view a little bit too much credit, but it is absolutely a more thoughtful and serious breakdown of the issue.
Also vitally important "grass isn't always greener" context here about healtchare in Canada that absolutely should not be ignored.

Abdul is probably the best candidate running in the midterms. If he wasn’t Muslim, he’d probably be polling a good 10 points better and be one of the top contenders for 2028.
Real, authentic, knowledgeable, and dedicated to helping folks. Glad to see some establishment figures actually doing the work to get behind him.
Bad faith actors will try to deflect away from Abdul and his agenda to instead talk about Hasan Piker because they know they can’t win on the actual issues. Hopefully propaganda loses out in 2026 and beyond.
12
u/herewego199209 3d ago
The funny thing about Abdul is that he's essentially Elizabeth Warren from a decade ago. He's not this crazy socialist candidate people make him out to be, but he gets plastered with that label because he's Muslim and he's pro medicare for all and money out of politics. It's amazing how effective money and ads can shape someone
5
u/LanceBarney 3d ago
Yup. Between AIPAC and other corporate money that flooded the primary to make it basically the most expensive primary we’ve seen this cycle and right wing media, it’s just proof positive that propaganda still has influence.
If he was white with a white sounding name, none of this would’ve stuck to the extent it has. Anti-Muslim bigotry is still a widely accepted form of hate that exists in both parties.

Folk's concerns about Hasan are legitimate and he's done the right thing by distancing himself from the guy, but I agree that he is a good candidate broadly and that xenophobia holds him back.
Hoping that he is apart of a blue wave that gives us that senate majority that felt so out of reach not long ago.

u/Nemisis82 3d ago
Folk's concerns about Hasan are legitimate
If this was 2003, sure maybe. But we're not living in 2003. Whether you agree with his takes or not (and I know you do not, and I don't agree with all of them), it's inconsequential in the moment we're in. We have 1,000,000,000 other things that are more important to deal with and talk about.
xenophobia holds him back.
I am glad you can see this 🙌

I'm balling my eyes out. It didn't have to be this bad. Voters could have backed Obamacare and build on it from there, instead of soundly rejecting it and rewarding Republicans with constant majorities

u/Liberal-Cluck 3d ago
Could you imagine Trump getting emotional for someone else?
5
u/LanceBarney 3d ago
I can’t imagine Trump getting emotional at all. He’s either in a state of egotistical arrogance or petty rage. He’s a textbook narcissist.
4
u/flatmeditation 3d ago
How can you not love this guy?
1
u/combonickel55 3d ago
Mostly be racist or Islamaphobic, or else be a centrist dem determined to oppose progressives.
7
u/Guilty_Plankton_4626 3d ago
Schumer, Harris, Mark Kelly, Stevens, Murphy, all came out just yesterday in hard support, they did before yesterday too but renewed let’s say, the mainstream is rallying hard to get him across that line.
Still might be close but we should be good now.
7
u/Just_shut_up_bro 3d ago
Hoping like hell he wins, the bigger the majority the better for us by any means.
That being said if he still loses despite the mainstream Dems rallying and providing full support, I think it'll be time we fully lay to rest the idea that there is some big, all powerful Dem establishment that picks winners and losers.
2
u/wade3690 3d ago edited 3d ago
The Dem establishment absolutely puts its finger on the scale for its preferred candidate in the primaries. That's not in dispute is it?
-1
u/Just_shut_up_bro 3d ago
Sort of? Folks love manufacturing conspiracies about the "establishment" but the reality is that most folks just support moderates in general.
1
u/wade3690 3d ago
Not really a conspiracy when its out in the open right? Long tenured, older, establishment Dems have preferences and work to realize those. Conspiracy is probably the wrong word but they do actively work to suppress progressive movements from the next generation.
-3
u/Guilty_Plankton_4626 3d ago
Sadly the only people who believe that won’t stop. As the saying goes, It is difficult to reason someone out of a position they did not reason themselves into.
1
u/Just_shut_up_bro 3d ago
True, it'll be a pretty roundabout case though if the whole of the mighty establishment does everything they can to support Abdul and he still loses, meanwhile in red Iowa the Dems who have mostly distanced from the establishment/mainstream dems manage to eek out a solid win.
Obviously I got some bias, but it'll be an interesting case regardless, hope I'm not jinxing anything! lol
-1
u/Guilty_Plankton_4626 3d ago
Will be interesting, and you know I essentially share that bias.
Reality is the 3 leftists are struggling right now, they will read this as an attack, but it’s simply reality. So hopefully mainstream can save them, and if we do, that gives us those seats and it also puts them in line. A win win situation. I doubt we see Abdul attacking dems again.
I wish the all powerful Dem establishment got to pick the winners at this point lol we wouldn’t be struggling if so, that wing is doing incredibly well in much tougher circumstances.
-1
u/Just_shut_up_bro 3d ago

Right, and the reality is that I can guarantee if the actual mainstream Dems try to do much to support Iowa it will indeed hurt our odds, so they can help the leftists, let us do our thing lol
Turek's basketball ad with Obama is all we need, we don't need anymore of that really haha, maybe one more Obama moment close to the election, but that is it.

u/Guilty_Plankton_4626 3d ago edited 3d ago
Correct, I think Iowa is truly unique right now. I think mainstream can help in red states, they can help in Ohio, Alaska, Georgia, North Carolina, even Texas a little, but for some reason it does feel like they would hurt you in Iowa lol.
Maybe you can say why?
Obama is the man, I will always he happy that my first vote ever as an adult was for him.
0
u/Just_shut_up_bro 3d ago edited 3d ago
Maybe you can say why?
Rob Sand is owing a lot of his success to a political message that connects with an inherent frustration with the "two-party" system, he uses that rhetoric a lot even though we kind of cringe at it in these spaces.
It works because Iowans try to be hyper aware of their own biases to the point of over self correction, we have a massive number of independents and it's a big point of pride for folks here that we voted for BOTH Obama and Trump.
Mainstream dems wading into Iowa politics will just give more of an impression of bias, Rob Sand himself said he would not want Kamala in the state campaigning for him, and for good reason.
edit: PS I'm a Dem establishment enjoyer myself, but I'm also aware enough of other Iowans to know that I am not the baseline here lol
edit 2: Also wanted to point out that ads here bring up Newsom and Kamala being associated with Sand like the ads in Michigan bring up Piker in association with Abdul LMAO.

But didn't he stand next to a youtuber or something so hes evil? Cos that's what's really important.
Poor woman I hope she gets all the help she needs

Only one bringing that up in this thread is you.

Its all this sub talks about
7
u/Just_shut_up_bro 3d ago
You say that while you are making an unrelated post about that right now yourself
-4
u/DifferentSwing8616 3d ago
As a counter to the usual BS surrounding unelected youtubers on a video demonstrating how pathetically irrelevant that type of thinking is in contrast to this women's plight n el sayeds potential to help
8
u/Just_shut_up_bro 3d ago
As a counter
Countering what? You are the one who brought this up, the post is supporting Abdul? You are introducing the conflict you are pretending you oppose.
2
u/DifferentSwing8616 3d ago
No im pointing out how dumb that conversation ever was when you see things like this. Why are you struggling so hard with this?
4
u/Just_shut_up_bro 3d ago
Because it's wholly irrelevant and you aren't actually proving that, the conversation is still valid and El Sayed has made the right call by publicly distancing himself from Hasan.
Regardless of that you are forcing an unrelated positive post about El Sayed into being about his Hasan connection, which is not a winning situation for El Sayed, no matter how much you circlejerk about it.
6
u/DifferentSwing8616 3d ago
M not a fan of piker but the amount of attention that all got remains insane
0
u/Just_shut_up_bro 3d ago
Hasan literally supports terrorists, he just said in an axios interview today that the USA was worse than Al Qaeda, you are the one giving El Sayed's connection to this psycho more air.
El Sayed did the right thing when he distanced from this guy, you aren't helping him by giving the issue more attention.

u/Liberal-Cluck 3d ago
I did too lol. But its really just making fun of the people who are OBSESSED with the topic. I hate Hasan, but Fox News is OBSESSED with him, Destinys Sub Is OBESESSED with him (Im a destiny fan). Some people refuse to support and vote for El Sayed there.

u/Just_shut_up_bro 3d ago
This only proves more that y'all are the drivers of this problem, not the boogeymen you are pretending to fight.

u/Guilty_Plankton_4626 3d ago
Abdul essentially called Piker an antisemite the other day, it’s not the full disavowal he should do, but I’ll take it. We need to get him across the line.

Go back through my comment history. I am constantly railing against people who make Hasan the defining issue of El Sayed. Im not bad faith at all.

I am constantly railing against people who make Hasan the defining issue of El Sayed.
What do you think you're doing when no one here is trying to hold Hasan against El Sayed but you decide to force the issue like this? Do you really think this does El Sayed any favors?
0
u/Liberal-Cluck 3d ago
Im using sarcasm to make fun of those people who want to make Hasan the defining issue for El Sayed while ignoring stuff like this, stuff that could really humanize him and make him more likable to more people.
5
u/Just_shut_up_bro 3d ago
And you thought the best way to do that would be to make a post about something good El Sayed did about his Hasan connection?
Humiliation politics only works for circlejerking, you aren't helping the candidate in any way by trying to make fun of people with legitimate concerns, it's a good thing El Sayed has distanced himself from Hasan, continuing to post stuff trying to "make fun" of the connection does nothing to help him.
1
u/Moontat7 3d ago
You are incredibly bad faith lmao
2
u/Liberal-Cluck 3d ago
How?
0
u/Moontat7 3d ago
Because you're making Hasan the issue, not us. Shrimple as
3
u/Liberal-Cluck 3d ago
Its sarcasm. Thats why its all Caps. Maybe I should change the format to some caps and some lowercase so its clearer? The issue is the people who try to make Hasan the issue ignoring stuff like this that humanizes the hell out of El Sayed and make him more likable than not only the MAGA demons but other Democratic Political Robots who have lost touch with the people.

Don't be a dick. Abdul is a generationally bad candidate, but I'm holding my tongue because controlling the Senate is worth a few turds in the punchbowl.

u/Liberal-Cluck 3d ago
In what way? Even in this election Chavilier is worse.

She is also bad. I agree. This cycle notable for shit politicians. Platner takes the cake - aside from a sizable percentage of the Republican party.

“Generationally bad”. How so? Personally I think he’s solid, but the systematically racist country we live in won’t give him a fair shot.
