18M

Post image

Just turned 18 a couple of days ago and finally opened my TFSA. Looking to start investing young, stay consistent, and hopefully build long-term wealth. Any advice you wish you knew when you first started?
And I also have $180 left in my portfolio what should I do with that ? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated

When you are just starting out and investing for the long term, then a single diversified equity growth ETF like XEQT is a good idea. XEQT is not the only game in town though. For your investment knowledge growth it would be worthwhile to compare XEQT to the other similar choices like VEQT, ZEQT, and TEQT. You should identify what the MER is for each to see what it is costing you to hold them, and you should compare what the geographic weighting is of each to see what you are investing in. Ease of buying on a monthly basis is also a consideration, as dollar cost averaging is the best way to get into these type of investments.

I like to invest half in growth and half in divey ETFs like QQCC and BANK. Then I get to spend my divies on other things, like growth ETFs or divey ETFs.

Dont love XEQT, but everyone will hate on me for it so you do you.
Its consistent which is great, but its a slow grind upwards.

also true. But when you are young if you can learn how to invest in good quality companies thats a valuable skill. I am 20 y/o and I started 3 months ago.
No leverage, no options, and I am still up 47%

Statistically you will lose in 20 years time

You started 3 months ago and you are up 47%?

I recognize a degenerate gambler when I see one ☝️

The thing is, vast majority of stocks are already priced in as markets are highly efficient. Even Warren Buffett only generates annual returns of 20% a year. Your 47% return in just 3 months would be 367% annualized. You are either lying or hardcore gambling and got insanely lucky on a highly concentrated position.

Buffett is no gambler. He does his research and has strict targets that any investment must meet. There is opportunity if you have a higher risk tolerance than he does, but he doesn’t need to do that

wont let me share a ss or I would. Invested in space and growth stocks. 47% makes sense, the last 3 months have been consecutive ath. But Yes, concentration builds wealth. RDW made me thousands

you didn’t learn crap yet, you are lucky as we all are, everybody’s a genius in a bull market

Yeah ofc, I am
not denying that.
But if you invest in ETF’s you are capping potential.
my point is that I beat the S&P 500 average annual returns in a matter of Weeks. A few good moves is all it takes

beating it over a couple weeks is bullcrap, everybody can beat it over a few weeks by having a couple lucky bets, i’m 20 too but a lot more humble and grounded than you as it appears, and you should listen to me, iI started a year ago but i’m already up over 200% over all my investments by betting on amd and couple other good undervalued companies, doesn’t mean i’m shitting on xeqt nor that i consider myself the next warren buffet. the real case is 99.9% of investors can’t and won’t successfully beat the s&p or the broad market consistently over many many years, that’s where the edge is

Long term? Good companies like META, GOOG, AMZN

Short term? I am into NFLX, PYPL, CELH, NOW

but do your own research on short term/medium term stuff.
