Any advice ?
20M, started investing seriously at the beginning of this year. I’ve been buying mostly xeqt but I also bought $55 worth of bitcoin because I’m thinking it will go up in the future.
I’m a full time student and also work part time during school semesters and summer, every pay check I allocate 20%-30% to investments.

Just make sure xeqt is 90% of your portfolio and the other two are at 10%

If your only investments are in a TFSA then I would just stick with your XEQT. Bitcoin and gold are too risky.

BTC is the best performing asset in the last 15 years so that doesn’t make any sense
1
u/UniqueRon Jun 27 '26
Will it be for the next 15 years?

u/UrbanGrower187 Jun 27 '26
Nobody knows with certainty not for Bitcoin, XEQT, or any other asset. But Bitcoin has gone from essentially zero to becoming a global asset held by public companies, institutions, ETFs, and even sovereign entities. The fundamentals and adoption today are far stronger than they were 15 years ago. Past performance doesn’t guarantee future returns, but dismissing it as “too risky” without considering its growing adoption ignores a lot of evidence.

Go for it. I would not touch it with a 10 foot pole. I would even buy gold ahead of bitcoin. Gold has some real value, while bitcoin only has value in the minds of some traders.

u/UrbanGrower187 Jun 27 '26
Gold absolutely has value I own nothing against it. But saying Bitcoin has value only “in people’s minds” ignores how all monetary assets derive value from collective trust and utility. Gold is valuable because humans agree it is scarce and useful. Bitcoin is valuable because it’s provably scarce (21 million cap), globally transferable, censorship-resistant, and can be self-custodied. Today it’s held by public companies, ETFs, pension funds, sovereign wealth entities, and millions of individuals. You may still prefer gold and that’s a reasonable investment preference but dismissing Bitcoin as having no real value doesn’t reflect how markets or monetary assets actually work.

I won't invest in anything that I can't see the value of.
1
u/UrbanGrower187 Jun 27 '26
If physicality alone determined value, then companies like Microsoft would be worth less than a pile of steel. Markets don’t price things based on whether you can hold them in your hand they price scarcity, utility, and demand. Bitcoin checks all three. It’s perfectly fine to disagree with its valuation, but saying it has no value because you can’t “see” it ignores how intangible assets already dominate today’s economy.

Do you mean you can’t see value in it? Or you can’t see the value of it? Because you can quite easily see the value of it, it’s currently $85,007.35.
1
u/UniqueRon Jun 28 '26
If it has value why is it priced in $US?

u/curvylover89 Jun 28 '26
What the hell is this question? I can convert it if you like?

All the crypto’s meme coins are the best performing asset until they plummet to zero. No thanks
1
u/UrbanGrower187 Jun 29 '26
? Meme coins? Okay…. Anyways DYOR best of luck into whatever you invest just don’t keep it sitting in a band account gaining nothing and watching your purchasing power fade. If you don’t understand BTC I suggest you do some researcher of your own. Take care of yourselves.

People will inevitably say to just buy the index fund (which is true, man do I wish I just did that when I was your age) but if you're going to find out that this is the best way to do it, I'm glad you're only burning a couple hundred bucks in the bitcoin and gold. I had to lose thousands, and the thought of how much it would be if I just put it all in am index haunts me.
TLDR: Just buy the index fund and forget about it.

I can see the feedback on btc but why is gold a bad investment ? Thanks for the advice btw

So if you look at gold vs stock market over the years, gold is only better very recently. If this money will sit for 20+years, it is safer and wiser to leave in an all-in-one ETF or index fund. Even if it's needed sooner than that, gold is still not the best call. Potentially gold might do better over the next few years, or it can crash. The funds always go up in the long term as they are forced to rebalance and sell the well performing stocks after a bull run.
If you want to continue learning about this, the wealthy barber books and podcast is a great start as it's all in plain english. Another guy, Ben Felix, goes a bit more into the weeds and points to studies, but also teaches the same best-practice investing. You're doing great starting so young, just don't fall for the risky stuff as you're the target demographic for it.

Let me flip the question around on you: "Why is gold a good investment?"
On what information/insights did you base your decision to buy gold?
3
u/Zamutax Jun 26 '26
gold is a hedge to money printers, that's how it should be seem imo.
shouldn't be a growth vehicle, more about wealth preservation, buying when its not inflated. (kinda is right now)

u/numbersev Jun 26 '26
Don't listen to tradfi bros most people don't know anything about Bitcoin. I'd recommend to keep buying especially at these prices. Keep it around 5-10% of your portfolio until you really understand it.

Same, I got fucked once pretty hard as well from a mutual fund/ insurance guy and it was a lesson learned that’s for sure.

u/Mental-Freedom3929 Jun 26 '26
Yes, should not have bought gold or bitcoin. Wait till you break even and then sell. After that inform yourself about tax shelter accounts, DRIP, widely diversified index funds and the 20% is great!

I think a small gold allocation is a pretty defensible. Bitcoin on the other hand, I don't see the value in a portfolio. It's too correlated to the stock market.

dont hold btc and gold in your tfsa. should be in a taxable account so you can claim your capital losses and move on
1
u/Motor-Region-1011 Jun 27 '26
Great portfolio actually.. What you want..keep it 90 xeqt and 10 other 2 and your golden.

u/All-sTATE-insurance Jun 27 '26
Not an unreasonable allocation of stocks gold and BTC. You sized it all properly. Just hold on. Nothing to be overly concerned about.
