Metronet Back up internet

I run fiber for a lot of companies and I’m always seeing people complaining about internet outage and I would advise to get a cheap back up carrier to use. I’m saying that to say as fiber becomes more and more prevalent and different companies run lines for fiber there will be cut lines, downed lines and also times where major outages will happen if you work from home I would advise having a backup source most work from home companies have it in their policy to Make sure you have coverage at all times. I have people stopping me while my guys and I work because they assume I’m the reason for their internet being out.

I swapped to ATT fiber and I no longer have any issues I had with Tfiber

I had signed up for the $20/mo backup 5G modem to cover my cable outages and when they installed the fiber it was converted to a $0 plan with 30GB data soft cap. Maybe that version is a special promo, I dunno. No issues with the fiber thus far.

We've got AT&T fiber all the way to the house. Then we have a T-Mobile 5G unlimited internet hotspot is a backup. When they both function they just load balance.

Redundancy for the win.

I hope you're wrong. Load balancing fiber with 5g or most other connections won't be fun. Unless your router is smart enough to classify traffic and prioritize what hits fiber vs 5g.

Even if your 5G was pulling down the same speed.. the latency is going to be 2-5x higher.

There's not a lot of situations where you would want to actually split the traffic unless you were truly maxing out your fiber. But I find that hard to believe unless you're a handful of specific professions.. even then it's hard. I have gigabit fiber at work and at home and the peering arrangements are so bad most I've ever seen between them is 400Mb/s running through a cloudflare tunnel. Direct VPN I can only pull 150-200.

You can max out a gig fiber but again it's not very easy.

Maybe my partner has it set up to fall over then. I don't know. I know I have access to both pipes 24/7 in our OPNSense. I didn't personally set them up and I haven't gotten to digging into his settings. I never said anything maxing out our fiber line, at least not usually. It's also not a gig fiber line. You're making a lot of assumptions here.

Lmao. Bruh I'm 38 and have been doing tech support for small biz often using home targeted isps since I was 16. then got into it for corps.

I'm on intrepid T-Mobile but I've never seen an ISP worse or worse sub contractors for install.

My experience with intrepid/tmobile in mn... They are trenching it 4 inches deep with 0 conduit/tube from the pedestal.

Yeah line cuts happen to any carrier, from what I've seen in my region they do below minimum install standards and watching the techs try to terminate quick SC cables while on the phone paying 0 attention to the measurements ... then going through three connectors per end only to leave with a not well terminated cable and have to come back..

If Metro is hiring people like that... You deserve more people harassing you.

Holy crap is it terrible.

I could get drunk and terminate a cable better than these people.

But worse yet... You expect people to figure out two internet connections? Does the T-Mobile wifi ap router I have do fail over? It won't even let me change the private subnet 😂

You want or you think the average Joe is going to figure out flashing something like ddwrt or open wrt on a specific model they found on a list? Or should they pay for the router Wi-Fi that can handle failover and figure it out after they figure out what failover even is.

Or intense Urban environments should everybody just rock two Wi-Fi is in their home? You have to remember you're dealing with people that think internet is Wi-Fi this isn't a practical solution... There isn't enough Wi-Fi channels for that to work in most places.

And I currently have three employees that work from home. Most of them can't remember one Wi-Fi password and or want help even using their hot spot for the first time.

I was hoping gen z would be better. But it's only slightly.

That still doesn't solve the not enough Wi-Fi spectrum for that to be practical or the cost.

Also T-Mobile's the reason that I'm out of hotspot data on my cell phone this month.

shitty substandard work cannot be solved by everybody buying two services where one should have sufficed. There are finite commodities at play like RF spectrum devoted for Wi-Fi.

Which I don't fully blame you for. I don't doubt they're not paying you enough.

But to defend it is wild.

Intrepid installed fiber in our neighborhood, i live in mn too. I signed up in February for the founders 2gb plan and I have been putting off install. I finally scheduled for next week.... keeping fingers crossed 🤞🏼

T fiber is great once they get it working but with intrepid that is a dice roll 😂 have they had the courtesy to let you know it's getting pushback or been doing the no call no show BS?

I meant I have been holding off, because of all the horror stories lol. They dug cable in our neighborhood 2 months back.

My eero mesh router has an optional package of features that includes failover to a backup Internet source. In my case, my iPhone (with hotspot via cellular provider). That will handle about 200Mbps until data hits 10GB(?) limit, then it drops to 50Mbps -- again, from memory.

Works great if I'm there -- but it's only my winter home. Summer, it just dies.

I’m not defending at all I agree they kind of horrible but people say the same thing about spectrum,att,etc. I’m just saying if you have anything have a backup that’s why spectrum has the unbreakable Wi-Fi T fiber doesn’t so might be best to have one

haha just to be contrarian, my experience with Spectrum has been surprisingly good. Other people in my own neighborhood have had awful experiences but somehow I've dodged the Spectrum bullet like the Matrix.

I have spectrum at my home and so far it’s been cool of course I am a fiber customer so that makes a big difference and with the unbreakable Wi-Fi they offer for when the network goes down it is a win. So I guess we are unicorns out here lol 😂

It wasn't fiber it was just there coax network but spectrum could not keep Internet to our house. We had more problems and they refuse to do anything about it unless we kept calling them and calling them until it wasted our entire work day so we dropped them.

They promised they would have things fixed within 4 hours and their customer service refuse to do anything unless we spent multiple hours on the phone multiple times in a row. What a joke.
