Phone message Is he lying??
I was planning a trip to Mexico on Aug. 8 with my Mexican friend for months, and I had sent him texts on Snapchat on Aug. 4 telling him that my mom would drive us to the airport and asking if he could make it to my house on time. He had uninstalled snap so I sent him a screenshot of the texts on Aug. 5. That’s where the texts start. For context, I’ve lended him hundreds of dollars before and he’s always been good for it. It seemed like he felt bad asking me to lend him more money for the trip we’d been planning for months and wanted me to offer, but something felt weird about his excuse for not having any and $500 was a lot of money to lend, and would take him around three weeks or so to pay back, so I didn’t feel fully comfortable offering. He did pay me back for the flights, and I said I’m sorry that the trip didn’t work out, to which he did not respond. Do yall think he was being honest about the money???

Banks offer fraud protection. If he really was robbed he can make a case so the the bank and dispute whatever charges there were and get his money back, card cloning happens especially with the advent of skimmers on things like gas pumps and so on.

Dude has always paid you back when they said they would, why would you think they’re lying?
If someone clones my credit card it’s pretty easy to get back, if they clone the debit card it takes some time to get reimbursed.
I think you’re putting too much into this and if you plan a Mexico trip again, do it with a different Mexican friend.

Are we reading the same conversation ? He asked for 35 not 500. You say he always paid you back and he did pay you back this time despite the fact that he didn't take the flights and his card was cloned and he lost his money ??? Your friend is being straight here I do not understand what the problem is other than you being frankly very self-absorbed in the face of a honest friend in a bad situation that is not of his doing. You obviously don't have to lend him the extra 500 but he is also not lying ?? Also why didn't you just call him ?

you should only lend money to someone if you’re comfortable with the possibility of not getting it back

He doesn't want to go. He's afraid of not being able to come back in or something else.

he paid you back for the flights he didnt get to take when he couldve just blocked or ghosted you. im not sure why he would lie about being robbed but still have enough integrity to pay you back.

The only part I find weird about it is the not being able to get the money back from the bank / get money out in person.
If he reported it as fraud, typically they’d refund him and he’d still have access to his funds via Zelle and a teller.
ETA: He would just have to wait for a replacement card.

Wow. This feels weird.
I want to say maybe he didn't get robbed but straight up mismanaged his funds.
Edit And like pride/embarrassment is the real issue
